40 years ago, next week, my wife and I were on honeymoon on the Great Ouse and Wissey. I took a plastic bathtub on hire from St Neots, and moored against the churchyard wall in Hemingford Grey the night before the wedding, then on to Hemingford Abbots in the morning. Walked back along the towpath for the wedding. The reception was held in the Abbots village hall and we walked across the meadow afterwards to the boat to begin our honeymoon. What we hadn't reckoned on was the Caravan Club rally in the meadow, which still in our wedding finest, we walked through. For two weeks everyone on the river knew about us, and in the riverside pubs we barely bought a drink, at one lock a couple celebrating their 40th insisted on sharing a couple of bottles of wine with us, even though there was a queue for the lock in either direction. We considered the tidal section, but our hire boat insurance did not cover us, so restricted ourselves to the approach to the Denver Sluice before turning around and making our way to the Wissey. As waterways go, it is exposed and windy, I'd like to be able to say that we were always fully in control of the boat, but that would not be quite true.

@@TheNomadicCrobot There is a reason hire boats have lots of fenders, with a wheel amidships it handles differently to a narrowboat where the tiller is at the stern. And whilst a strong side wind pushes the long slab side of a narrowboat in a crab like fashion, it can induce a spin in a 28 foot bathtub.

High tide ALWAYS is an hour later per day - twice a day; except of course when we change the clocks! Going from Denver Lock to Salter's Lode Lock is always harder than the other way round. It's the entrance into the lock when you are also fighting the tide or the wind that makes it worse. Almost at March and Fox's Marina 👏👏

So much fun guys. I was looking forward, but with trepidation, to the tidal bit but you did it without problem. That bloody wind, the extra weight you carry properly didn’t help, once underway the weight could be in your favour but getting started maybe not, but eh I don’t know. That was fun and thanks for taking us along. Look forward to the next vlog. Take care see you soon. 💕

I actually never thought of that, yes your probably absolutely right Pauline.. the extra weight would make it harder pulling her out, I actually thought with the boat being such a mess with ballet everywhere would make the boat hard to handle but its been just fine, we can't wait to have her fully finished ,thanks for your thoughts 😀

Fremsley (narrowboat) The spiders are dancing elegantly tonight The radio is loud and clear Tired of dreams of boats on hills It's time to move on to pastures new The bonds that tie us can be broken And we can start to live life anew. Like a baby Resting on a table Like a baby Resting on a table They are rowing to the shore They all feel their spirits are broken And tears are rolling down their cheeks And their eyes are shot through with pain And they laugh out loud Because they know they've got it all again Like a baby Resting on a table

Farmers own the bank on non tidal rivers. You have no right to moor there and can be turfed off if they don't want you there. Unlike canals, there is no towpath to moor on. I'm not sure how close that was to March but in the town centre there are public moorings. Ideal if you need shopping or an evening takeaway meal.
