Usopp single-handedly defeats Arlong's 2nd best guy (after the karate expert) and afterwards you can just tell he knows nobody will ever believe him.😅

Garp had two goals with how he was chasing after Luffy. The first was to obviously do as he said and make sure that Luffy was truly sure of himself and ready for the challenges the Grand Line would be. The second, and isn't explicitly said anywhere but can be easily inferred from how Garp responds to every other Marine who chases after Luffy - he is keeping the Marines from interfering with Luffy and his crew by basically laying claim to the chase of the Strawhats and forcing all of the other Marines to back off.

Garp's fists are filled with love.

The reason Garp went so hard on Luffy was because like Navi said… he KNOWS how dangerous the grand line is. He knows how powerful the pirates, marines and monsters are there whereas Luffy is completely naive and has no idea what he’s getting into. He was literally testing him to make sure he was ready. You can say it’s extreme and abuse but considering how dangerous the grand line actually is he technically went easy on him with his tests 😂😂

What Garp did was reasonable.. because if Luffy going to the Grand Line, he's going to be facing a lot of strong enemies, the emperors of the seas and strong marines.. so Garp need to makesure Luffy can survive.

This season has been the best live action anime adaption I’ve ever seen and I can’t wait for season two

i feel like LA Garp was just preparing Luffy a little more to try and get him to understand just what he's signing up for and that the grand line ain't no joke ( cause it really is dangerous ). He's trying to see just how committed Luffy is to go after his goal. Also trust me LA Garp is so much more tamed with his 'fist of love' to his grandson compared to original manga and also anime Garp. He does not hold back on him at all in the manga and anime

In fairness to Garp not going easy, there are way worse things in the Grand Line that can potentially break Luffy, Garp’s training was simply to prepare him for whatever’s out there, regardless if he becomes a Marine or Pirate. Heck, Luffy said he didn’t want his journey to be easy, so he shouldn’t expect his gramps to do the same if he plans on continuing it.

The Garp connection is more obvious to people who know him since his full name is Monkey D Garp.

The world building is fantastic in this series so far. I love the the way they used the Wanted Posters when introducing the villains, but the best thing for me, was the way the action and fight scenes were filmed. The fight choreography and camera work is top notch.

The anime opening theme kicking in immediately after the barrel scene really kicked me in the feels. I have some issues with the live action and I can see areas that definitely needed improvement, but that barrel scene and transition really cemented for me that behind all the problems, all the changes, all the limitations of live-action compared to animation beats the living heart of what makes One Piece special.

I think Garp's story makes sense if you think of it as not that he was PLANNING to test Luffy, but that he just realized that about himself. Like "wow, I just realized that I thought I wanted to capture you, but really I just wanted you to prove who you are"

Garp - as a GrandPa and in the same time a Vice Admiral - did his best to stop Luffy but he eventually knew he can't change him but ... i think he had another reason why he want to stop his Grandson from going to the grand line...y'all will know

Loved all the emotional highs in the denouement, it keeps ramping up from Nami's scene at her mom's grave to the cast-off ceremony. I knew nothing of One Piece going in, but all the characters were very easy to root for off the bat, and it was touching and satisfying to see them all firmly band together by the end. And that song! By the geniuses that gave us 'Toss a Coin to Your Witcher'. It's beautiful, and it's subtly been Nami's music theme all season.

Garp wants to make sure Luffy is ready to be a pirate. Its one thing to keep saying it but there are serious complications that come with that. Powerful people will be after him constantly. Its not something to undertake lightly. So i feel Garp goes so hard on Luffy to make sure he's actually ready and serious about the life of a pirate.

Bruh. 100 percent yes. Garp gives no fucks about wasting the Marine's funds. Sengoku would be mad, but the Hero is allowed to do what he wants haha. Also, yeah. It's abuse. And Garp isn't a perfect parent. But going to the Grandline is a place where no one is going to pull their punches and Garp pushing Luffy to the edge isn't a bad lesson if he's worried about his safety. Anyways. I thought I'd enjoy these reactions more, but hey. They don't always hit.

Garp's arc imo comes from concern about his grandson's safety and fear that Luffy might end like GolD Roger. He's insane and extremely frustrated as an exagerated tough love grandfather archetype who can't express his feelings.

What do you guys mean? Garp was incredible as a grandpa. He did what he did in order to make sure that his grandson had the capabilities and mindset in order to be able to survive when he went to the grand line. You all seem to have fundamentally misunderstood Garp and what he was doing the entire time. Everyone should have someone looking after them like Garp did.

I've seen a lot of reactions. But none of them noticed the arc Garp went through? He wasn't just testing Luffy the whole time, a lot of things happened that convinced him to let luffy go. And he was just testing him in the last episode.

About the Garp and mihawk bit, Garp is a very famous marine every pirate knows his name , and since the series made his appearance from the beginning I thought they should have given his full name when we learned that he is luffy’s grandfather but we didn’t which is a little confusing for non readers, his name is monkey D Garp so I guess mihawk connected the names and since Garp is 60+ years old he is most likely is luffy’s grandpa

Hey, guys! Thanks for this reaction to the final episode! So happy to know that the live action series has been a hit, and touched so many people. As Navi and Marketa noted, most of the iconic scenes from the comics and anime have been reproduced very faithfully in live action, which makes the streamlining and cutting of some storylines and characters easier to take. The barrel scene is no exception. It's probably been a while since you both read it, but the Straw Hat gang's lines are almost word for word from the manga. However, meshing those with memories from their respective childhoods was a nice extra touch. In case no one has mentioned, the pattern of Nami's new tattoo is a pinwheel and a tangerine. The pinwheel has sentimental value for her, but there's a reason for that in the comics that doesn't seem to have been represented here. As other commenters have noted, people who know Garp are aware of his relationship with Luffy for a very simple reason -- it's all in the name. I don't think Garp's full name has been mentioned yet, however, so the confusion is somewhat understandable. And there's an aspect to Luffy's (and Garp's) name that's highly significant to the coming storyline. I see that as one more reason why Garp was so hard on him during this reunion, in addition to other suggested reasons here. Garp knows that Luffy will come into conflict with some insanely powerful people, including ones you haven't seen in the manga yet, simply because of that name. And even if he can't know all the details yet, Garp had to make it clear that he needs to take the Grand Line seriously. I'm glad that you brought up Luffy's charisma, too. That's going to play a bigger role in the story than you can possibly imagine.

As a newbie to One Piece I have to say this really surprised me. I was expecting a wacky story, but not the level of depth that it delivered. Certainly didn't think I would shed a tear.😢

About important characters knowing about Luffy being Garp's grandson, is not that far fetched, Garp is known as the "Hero of the Marines" because he caught Gold Roger, so most people in the world know him by that name or just "Garp the Fist" not that many people in the world know his last name so... Mihawke being a warlord and having ties with the Marines knows Garp last name, and just by hearing Luffy has the same last name he just puts 2 and 2 togheter. The same for Zeff, he was a known pirate in the past that actually made it to the grand line and was there for like 1 year... so without a doubt bigger pirates end up being aware of marine Viceadmirals, or even higher ups just because they are being chased by them

So the thing about Garp's actions is very clear. He was testing Luffy before his piracy was solidified by getting a wanted poster. Remember, one of the comments brought up by haircut is he couldn't understand why a Marine like Garp is chasing a small timer like Luffy. Also, while you think Garp was going to extremes to teach a lesson, he was actually taking it extremely easy on him. What Luffy tasted was only a small fraction of what Garp is capable of and what he will face in the Grandline. Marketa and Navi should know this giving one of the next big bad Luffy faces 🪝

A lot of people have an issue with garps motivation and actions here. The best way I think you can think about it is that while he was pursuing Luffy at first he didn't want him to be a pirate ,he never did. I think he wanted to be the one to catch him and set him straight. But then after the talk with Zeff I think he was ready to let Luffy be on his way but he had to fight him to see what he was made of. The grand line really isn't anything to play with lol. Also keep in mind he has to skirt a fine line between family man and vice admiral .

The anime will really explain a lot about Garp and why he did what he did. It's a touch different, but Garp is just chaotic in nature, tbh. He's got a lot riding on himself with Luffy, what he did was pretty justified in the grand scheme of things, making sure Luffy knew what he truly wanted and to make sure without a doubt that that is what he wanted above all. Its complicated but he has really strong mixed feelings, and I think they did a really good job portraying his hidden mixed feelings really well.

Luffy did mention in the first episode that about 10 will probably do for a good crew so my guess is that we'll have around that many when all is said and done

These actions by Garp were his last ditch effort to capture Luffy and basically give him an ultimatum that it's either jail or the Marines. He knew once Luffy left the east blue, it was too late at that point. Like he said to Zeff, Garp doesn't want the same fate for Luffy that happened to Roger. But his fight with Luffy at the end made him realize that it was inevitable and that he had to let him go.

Garp being a vice admiral makes him stronger than everyone in the east blue. It's getting him ready. Everyone Luffy fights puts hands on him in there and he gets stronger. It'll be a treat. In this version garp being catalyst to show that was perfect!

Fun fact, the barrel scene where they show their dreams and transition it as them kids was added because the editor of the show put it there, and when the director saw it he liked it very much, I think it was his favourite moment and the flashbacks as them kids. You don't know Garp yet in the manga but yes he does the "tough love" or "love abuse" thing, and he does stuff like child endngrment thing during Luffy's training. I think they already reveal how many seasons they are aiming to make which is 6. So here's what I think happens Season 2 will start in Loguetown and end in the winter kingdom. Season 3 will be mostly Alabasta arc. Season 4 Jaya, Skypia arc (the director mentioned he doesn't want to skip this arc) Season 5 Water 7-Enies Lobby Season 6 Thriller arc and Introduction to Summit War/Marineford War I think they will end it in a biggest cliffhanger reserve for the Marineford War.

I’m pretty sure Garp was spending most of the season trying to stop Luffy from being a pirate before it’s too late to turn back. He then had that conversation with Koby, and realized he can’t change Luffy’s mind, so the best he can do is test him. Which is exactly what he did in their next encounter. After that, he was given a bounty. No turning back.

Garp was testing Luffy to make sure he would survive. The difference between the Grand Line and the East Blue is like the difference between an MMA title fight and a school playground.

The test was to make sure he was ready for the grandline. He doesnt want him to enter the grandline and just die the first day.

Guys above Garp and other Vice Admirals in the "official" Marine pecking order are the Admirals and then the Fleet Admiral at the top. Vice Admirals (along with Rear Admirals and Commodores) are sort of third in line, but it's canon both here and in the manga/anime that Garp's turned down promotions to stay where he's at.

i wish more reactors caught on to the fact that it’s kind of implied in Garp’s conversation with Zeff that a major reason why he doesn’t want Luffy to be a pirate is because he saw how Roger ended up, and he didn’t want Luffy to end up the same way (“skewered by marine polearms”) Garp also said to Coby that he refused lots of offers for him to become Fleet Admiral (highest position in all of the marines) because then he’d have to follow the law to a T, but even as a Vice Admiral, which he currently is, Garp is still bound by most of the law, and if Luffy were to get caught by the navy (which he knows at this point has people way stronger than Luffy is, especially in the Grand Line), he wouldn’t be able to do anything to save Luffy from the entire navy anymore because of the law he is bound by (also, one man can’t face the entire navy alone) Garp’s methods may be questionable and extreme, but if anything, it shows the underlying desperation and frustration underneath his surface-he just wants those he considers family to be safe. A strict softie, if you will. A classic military grandpa. He is abusive tho, not gonna deny that haha Impact > Intention the ending of this season just shows how he is now coming to terms with Luffy’s passion and identity, just as how a parent-figure lets go of their kid. also, he didn’t really go around on a wild goose chase, wasting government taxes going after Luffy for nothing. in that process, they managed to better the leadership of the marine base at Shells Town, capture Captain Kuro, expose Nezumi’s corruptness, AND capture Arlong. Arlong and Kuro would have never been exposed if it weren’t for Garp chasing down Luffy because Kuro had been faking his death, and Arlong was in cahoots with a corrupt marine. it’s also implied that another reason is because Garp wanted to clean up Luffy’s messes in order to delay his wanted poster because that would officially make him a pirate. that’s why even after stealing the Grand Line map from a freakin’ marine base, he still didn’t get any notoriety and only after his confrontation with Garp did he finally get that sweet Wanted poster. meaning, Garp finally allowed it. Garp is actually really complex

I feel like that last LA scene with Garp is trying to bring back a familiarity to Garp that he had in the manga/anime because I wasn't the biggest fan of LA Garp but that last scene gives me hope that in future season I'll see the Garp version I am more familiar with in the anime/manga.

Garp is the hero of the Navy which is why no one can stop what he’s doing. His bestfriend is the fleet of the Marine and I believe was also trained by the commander and chief of the world government.

Garp wanted at first to stop his grandson from being a pirate. It literally starts with him telling another pirate "i warned you" and doesn't want his grandson to die. When that didn't work he wanted to throw everything at Luffy to see if he could handle the things he's going to witness on the grand line. Playing pirate and just saying you're a pirate is different than believing it til death.

Monkey D. Garp is a very well known marine, he is called hero of the marine. Thats why Zeff made the connection since Luffy wrote his name and often saying his full name. Mihawk knew because he is buddy with Shanks and pretty much have a connection to the government.
