It's annoying when people say that this episode is about Jack's tatoos. Only the flashbacks are about them and while they might be the worst in the series, on Island storylines are a solid and logical follow up to the previous episodes. It ain't bad at all and Jack's a savage in this episode. The fact that fans consider THIS to be the worst episode in the whole series just tells you what a fantastic show this is.

Juliet is jacks counterpart throughout this season. She lives amoung them but never truly one of the others. People overlook this episode emphasis in all the characters this episode. I find it has a lot more value. After all that's what it may say but that's not what Atchara said she saw in jack. He is a leader it makes him strong but sets him apart from everyone else making him lonely, afraid, and angry.

Everyone saying _Exposé_ is bad in the comments is wrong. Dead wrong... I mean, buried alive wrong. It's great.

To answer your question; The other tattoos on actor Mathew Fox aka Jack's shoulder was the tattoos from when he was on a show called "Party Of Five."

What is so hard the understand about a group of people who have a set of traditions not wanting some random non-member come in and appropriate that tradition without understanding the significance of it? Whether they are justified in what they did is another thing, but I think their motivation is easy to see.

I sort of get the message about the tattoo. "He is not one of us" is the message. The negative take on this is that Jack is an outsider who is not one of them. But the positive take is that Jack is not one of them because he is a leader. Someone who is more than a normal person. in that sense it is a powerful message based on perception.

I gotta say that this is the weirdest episode of the show and not in a good way. Having said that, now that I watched the episode again, I did got some things: 1. As chronology is concerned there are three videos on youtube with jack's flashbacks chronological and this happens right after he told the truth about his father being drunk and killing that girld he operated. 2. Jack was always told by his father that he doesn't has what it takes to be a leader, so after what he did to his father it was logical to ask a woman who has such a gift if his father was right or not. 3. The thing Achara says and the thing Isabelle says to jack are one and the same thing: He is a leader a great man, that makes him lonely... etc. = He walks among us but he is not one of us (also refered to the fact that he was within a strange group of people as wel as to the fact that he is a leader who walks among "normal" people and who is not one of them). 4. Being tatooed as a stranger was against what Achara would normaly be asked to do, because presumably she was only supposed to do tatooes to people from her country or culture. That's why he was recognized by the gang and beaten because he forced someone from their own people to do something against her character and against the rules of her people. Glad to see Jack learned something from this lesson, with Juliett representing Achara in the present time, and trying to save her and not use her, like he did with Achara. It may seem far stretched out but is the only plausible explanation to what this weird episode said about Jack as a character and as a leader in the show. Hope that clears up something.

This episode ain't the absolute worst thing in the world tbh, the Sawyer stuff is good etc -- it's just very evident that they were stalling here and were running out of flashback stories to tell that were important/necessary etc. I also think it's helped by being sandwiched between two really goood episodes (3x08, Desmond's flashes, and 3x10, Hurley's fun minivan episode). Personally, I think Charlie's second episode in season 1 (Homecoming) was a lot worse than this

How is this the worst Lost episode ever? I have only watched up to this ep so far and it isnt the worst. Charlie becoming a baby-napper was still the worst episode up until this point.

I kinda liked this episode when it aired. It's all mysterious and weird which I liked. I thought the Tattoo thing would prove to be a cosmic pivotal point in his life that put him in a path to the island or something. And we got to see a glimpse of the unique Others society. We meet a new key figure in the Others, cool! They have their own judicial system..cool! Marked? What is that? What kind of island privileges did she lose? And Cindy and those people who watched Jack? Was that a unique Others cult ritual? Witnessing a prisoner before his/her judgment? There was so many potential on exploring the culture and ritual of the Others. But oh well....

Nikki I have the Hurley collectable as well! It's one of the possessions I'm the most proud of.

One of the greatest episodes. The way it disregards everything fans want to learn and says ''Screw you guys I'm LOST and I'm gonna tell you the story *I* want. This one's about a tattoo...enjoy.''

This was one of my favorite episodes of season 3 up to this point cuz it was fine and it's far less of "why are these things happening?!" and more of just a cheesy story. It was a much needed break from the constant questions and just being lost.

We perceive the "others" as being bad because of how Ana Lucia portrayed them to our survivors, but she was damaged goods, paranoid and and she had a terrible read on the situation. The question to ask is why were some taken by the "others" and others not taken. Whoever the "others" are, they were there first. Isn't it natural for them to be wary of a bunch of people that show up on their island and start blowing things up, eating the food and killing Ethan, Goodwin, the 2 guys Eco killed on the first night, justified or not. Why do we assume Cindy is brainwashed? Maybe she was just rescued and taken to a safer place and is happy there? Think back to what Goodwin told Ana Lucia before she kills him, what Ben said to her. Jack's attitude about getting the tattoo and his meltdown with Cindy come from the same dark place inside of Jack. He is among them, but not one of them.

The main reason this episode I so off is that it does not feel like Jack and is plainly not an episode in Jack's life. Much like the buried alive horror story in season one, the tattoo story is plainly derived from some other script or story.

I put this episode slightly higher then Expose. I think the reason is because this flashback throws me off even more when this seasons finale shows up when we first see Jack with a beard. So in a way it slightly strengthens the finale by misdirection.

Funny that this episode is widely considered the worst episode of the series, but the next episode is mine, and a lot of peoples favorite in the whole series

Ah yes, the legendary "Jack's tattoos" episode. Play very close attention to this one people, especially the Others "Sheriff", as this episode factors heavily into the mythology of this show.

Jack's man pain really does nothing for me

I never watched this series on tv. I pretty much watched an episode per night on dvd. So I didn’t have to wait a week per episode. So this episode wasn’t that bad to me. The episode of the two random characters that supposedly came out on Halloween was the worst episode in my opinion.

This is for sure one of the bottom episodes (but still not bad imo). It's mostley weak due to the flashback story but since we never see that new other again her whole introduction becomes pointless as well. My least favorite episode is still Exposé though.

The tattoo is super mundane and boring and doesn’t carry any of the intended themes in these episodes. Not offended, just thought it’s lazy and carries kind of a who-gives-a-fuck attitude towards our culture. Whether the tattoo culture and its taboo is accurate is for Thai or specifically Phuket people to interpret.

The worst episode is between this one and Expose, I'm currently rewatching and I remember very little of seasons 4,5 and 6 so I'm not sure but from the first 3 seasons those are the two worst.

I don't think the island part of the episode is bad at all tbh. I found the stuff with Juliet quite interesting but yeah, this was the worst Jack flashback period. He's in my top three faves on the show and I still didn't enjoy it. It's pretty much filler.
