The Norwegian sounds E and I are quite different from what we expect in England.

Thank you so much for these videos, they help a lot! I bought your The Mystery of Nils book 2 months ago because I will study in Norway next year for 6 months, and the book together with these pronunciation videos have been really helpful for me.

For me "I" was simply a cleaner, purer and longer sort of English "Eee", and not much trouble. However, a long Norwegian "E" is strange. I suddenly realised that it is more than one sound. It rises and it falls over a sort of hill (1.15) .

Yes, I is simple, and E is not. It's true that the E "falls" a bit towards the end, but that's a bit advanced and usually not the big problem for English speakers - the more serious problem is not making the E sound "forced" enough.

Really listening to the word "En" was a huge revelation to me.

Interesting, is the "i" sound the same as in Swedish?

The "E" sound is like the "A" in the American English "Can't" where it's not a normal short "A" sound as in Cannot or patty, and not an "Ah" sound like british English cahnt or ahnser, (Can't and Answer.)

Hmmm they are similar, but way more extreme. The E is much more "forced" than the American "can't", and the A is even a bit darker than in "answer".
