The Game Boy had a lost online feature using a cellphone to go online in Japan. However this didn't make it to the west. But why? And what games supported it? Today we explore these. #Nintendo #Gameboy #GamingHistory

The online functionality in Japanese Pokémon Crystal has always fascinated me, I wasn't even alive when it was still in service. I would love to experience going online, If only modders could bring this service back. Every other version of Pokémon Crystal has tons of unused content.

I really wish the 3DS versions included this. A shame really

It is pretty mind blowing. When I had these games as a kid my family had just purchased their first desktop computer. Being able to play pokemon online would have been unthinkable to me back then.

We at least get some of the features in the West. The Odd Egg was put into other versions and the VC release of Crystal allows you to get Celebi

This was very much a Japan-only addition for good reason. The mobile market in America hadn't taken off yet and the infrastructure just wasn't there. It would be nice to have that stuff today but I doubt people would put up with the MTX.

I love how interesting these videos really are, they're very educational and very insightful, I always wondered about the GB online thing, shame it never got that popular, just like the 64DD...

It's stuff like this that's ahead of its time. If it waited a bit longer, had better marketing or used better technology, it may have caught on.

At that point in time, the mere fact of having a mobile phone was already placing you among the early adopters. Not surprise it didn't find success.

Premieres just mess up our sub feeds with stuff we can't watch.

I know right? They should scrap that feature

Heh sorry about that. The only reason I do this is because I want people to have an idea and be able to better schedule themselves to join

@@TheObsessiveGamerIf I'm honest, at least for me, it makes me just ignore the video and forget about it until later, well after it's uploaded.

Normally, I try to comment before anyone else does, but I guess I lost this... In other words, this video topic seems really interesting!

It is a really fascinating topic. But as usual glad you could comment before the video started :)

Hi. I actually did some patches for Game Boy Wars 3, including a full translation patch, a balance patch called the PALBal patch, and some other patches providing changes including removing the need to handle online stuff to summon Mercenary Units. If you have any questions, please fire away. I'm letting you know since you did actively mention about GBW3 a bit.
@salmansengul7 ай бұрын
Why would you need a translation when all of the online services Japan only or were you able to play that very game outside of Japan in english?
@MasterKnightDH4 ай бұрын
@@salmansengul Game Boy Wars 3 never came out in America though. You're needing a translation patch to be able to play it in English.

Great video. Is that actual footage for the online service for Crystal?

This basically points why the GS Ball's anime appearance was a WASTE OF TIME. As for the game itself, just use a Gameshark.

Online ? On the Game Boy ? That's one thing I never heard was even planned, I'm eager to see what this was about and how it was meant to work since, you know, it's a Game Boy.

It was Japan only, and only available for a few years. It was pretty awesome.

Back in those days, all online services were nickel and diming. I remember AOL used to charge per hour for the Internet before unlimited. I also remember my cell phone charging me for a minute of airtime just because my phone rang 3x times despite me not answering. The charges you are complaining about were normal before broadband internet.

Seems kinda useless outside of trading Pokemon. Even the Celebi event could've just been on the cart to begin with. There wasn't Skype back then, you if you wanted to talk while playing with your friends you'd need to use even more of the phone bill.
@Gewehr_39 ай бұрын
Yes, which would require you having a separate cell phone or using your landline as well, I would think. I bet people scheduled battles on forums or something like that back in the day and talked about it after.

4:18 the dreaded "at that"! keep working on your scripts, as this phrase is a hallmark of your videos/voiceovers. ETA: It sticks out because it's a bit of an oddity for English language voiceovers. I recommend you keep working to reduce usages of "...at that" at the end of sentences and finding alternative ways to convey your meaning. Keep up the good work!
