In 1985 Theodorakis gave a concert in Belgium with his ensemble. Here are the songs of that concert. Asma Asmaton from the cycle Mauthausen (Kambanellis) sung by Maria Farantouri

I moved to Paros more than a year ago planning to stay three months and have made it my home. I am in love with the light, the rocks, the crazy winds, the passion, all of which I feel deeply in your music and in Fantantouri's voice. I will learn this song in Greek, though I don't know if I could ever sing it without weeping. Ευχαριστο.

fyi. Asma Asmaton means "song of the songs". IIRC, this refers to a real person, a Lithuanian Jewish girl, with whom Iakovos fell in love with; and you can imagine what happened next, in the concentration camp. Having said that, I can't see how someone will not be moved by reading again the lyrics of the song, with this in mind. RIP Iakovos, these words curry a deep message.

This is the saddest song I ever heard. What a voice, what a music! It is even more gripping when you don't understand the lyrics, they only distract. Only 2 words need to be understood: Auschwitz and Dachau. I hope this never ever repeats itself again. Life is hard enough already.

The lyrics of Kambanellis are possibly the best part of the song, as he was in the camp and describes his love for a girl thwrw
@soisodoeht7 жыл бұрын
The writer of the lyrics, Iakovos Kampanellis, was actually imprisoned in Mauthausen concentration camp and fell in love to a Jewish girl (whom he eventually lost after their liberation). It's like a love/life triumph in a place where facing death was an everyday routine.

On May 5, just before noon, a mighty American tank, smoked and marked by war, knocked down Mauthausen Gate and entered the precinct. And this God-sent chariot of freedom was, he says, one of the countless and invincible of the eleventh brigade of chariots of the Third American Army commanded by a great general named George Patton! ... What nice words, what heavenly news ... they looked puzzled, proud, sad ... Well they did and stayed up there, on the back of the tank. They escaped so many battles. We would not escape our joy. We screamed, tore our clothes, shook like stayers. We are crammed, trampled, to get close to the tank. Many fell on top and kissed the smoked irons and others banged their heads and cried.

I think her voice now is better suited for this song some 30 years after this performance. I seen her sing this same song in 2014 and her voice is older and wiser and just as powerful. I don't even speak Greek but beautiful music needs no language. I did not know it was about Concentration camp but I felt it was a sad song.

I also love the lyric and think simplicity make it stronger. Cause really when love is lost, when love is kill by the injustice and the cruelty what can you say. Hear, the man lost his life, lost everythong, theres not space of intellectual words, cause love uis love anda lost is lost. When the feelings are to deep you cannot waste your time on vannal words. Remember that the is really written by a man in mauthausen and remember his lover.

It is also probably worth pointing out that Theodorakis is referencing the sections of the Old Testament 'Song of Solomon' aka 'Song of Songs' (Asma Asmaton) where the female protagonist is searching for her beloved and recasting it as the anguished search by a mother for her daughter lost in the Nazi concentration camps. Notice how the orchestration mimics the rhythmic sound of cattle truck wheels on train tracks.

,How this lyrics born from Iakovos Kambanellis , At that time, every Sunday when we were not working, we stood for hours and watched the women who also came out of the tents and looked at us. The distance that separated us was great. It is a question of whether we could communicate and whether we were still shouting. Of course, no one dared to try such a thing. He didn't even need to. This silent stare through two barbed wire fences needed no words. It was the time of love in Mauthausen. But think ... These women and these men who looked at each other silently for endless hours were dressed in the same striped, faded, well-worn clothes of the deceiver. Their bodies were skin and bone, their cheeks sucked and hairy from the vitamin deficiency. The hair is cut with a strip shaved in the middle, from the cuticle to the neck. Only the eyes were bigger and deeper than before to fit the fear. The power line with the high voltage current and the barbed wire with the watchtowers was not a simple technical installation, an impenetrable fence. Here an order was to finally separate the male from the female. An order the size of a degree. A split of the eternal couple. A paraphrase cut from the heavens and the earth to be "in one flesh

I have removed all comments that were not about this music. I feel there are enough fora to ventilate opinions for or against these topics. Myself I think that any attitude that is fueled by "if you are not for us, you are against us" will forever perpetuate strife instead of solving it. If you feel offended or censored by this action I appologize but I do not wish my uploads in the music section to become a political or religious arena.
