Theodore Dalrymple on Britain’s woke police and Oxford street chaos

There’s kind of gloom over Britain’s future and a feeling that everything is degenerating and has been for some time. It even affects people whose lives are perfectly satisfactory. To give one example, we have no confidence in the police, we don't respect the police and we're right not to respect the police. We feel that public services have degraded, educational levels are appallingly low and infrastructure has deteriorated. To discuss how life in Britain has changed in recent decades Steven Edginton is joined by the conservative writer, critic and psychiatrist Theodore Dalrymple in the latest Off Script podcast.

Poor parenting or virtually no parenting at all. I personally deny any "White Privilege" but I will admit to having "Intact and loving family, consisting of a mum and a dad" privilege. It's extraordinary that so much focus is on White Privilege which, if it even exists, is pretty much homeopathic in it's weakness of dilution, whereas the advantages of growing up in a more-or-less functioning family with a mum and dad are clearly measurable. Yes, of course, single parents can do a great job bla bla bla etc etc.... but it simply isn't ideal and should be recognised as not being ideal.

I like Dr. Daniels because of his insight in working in Corrections. I also worked in Corrections in California for 25 years. I never met an inmate who thought of himself as a victim. On the contrary, the idea that their incarceration was someone else’s fault would have been undignified. I heard it once, I heard a variant of the following hundreds of times: “My brother is an attorney and my sisters work for IBM. I put myself in this place. Growing up I was a screw up and wouldn’t listen to my parents.” IMHO, many people who work in various areas of “social work” know this to be true; but if the truth ever came out, in the words of the late great comic George Carlin, “the whole system would collapse.” Have a nice day. @@Olivia-lu3gg

i had a major accident in 2009 and to cut a long story short had to have the middle of my shin removed, wear an external fixator for 2.5 years whilst the two ends grew closer to each other and then joined. I had somewhere between 25-30 ops across 4 different hospitals, the main one being the BRI with the last one operation in 2017 to have pins and screws taken out. It felt like i lost everything from girlfriend to my job but the staff gave me hope and evenutally gave me life backi recovered can now walk although running isnt an option! My story is one of many that the NHS have served and saved in its lifetime and is the pride of our country. The generation that fought ww2 came home having seen horrors and rather than resentment tried to build a better fairer world. The NHS creation being one of those things. I worry about its future as i can see a time where a government part or fully privatises it. I pray this never happens as it has helped so many of us

This chap, Theodore is having a fantastic time in France. Look at the beautiful Sun behind him, an incredibly beautiful country steeped in tradition in history with some of the finest food and wine on the planet. A country of class! Why would he want to spend time in Britain that is a toilet and in the gutter.

When governments encourage fatherless families sadly this is the outcome. Also, previous and subsequent governments and privatised all our utilities therefore everyone seems to pass the buck rather than take responsibility, thus no pride! Similarly, our governments have encouraged the demise of our once beautiful and great country by encouraging every foreigner to come to these shores, bringing with them their own culture, religion and indeed their mother country ideologies and wanting to change the UK to suit their cultural needs. Many not contributing anything to the taxation system instead take rather than give……. The end of Rome…… sad times.

I'm relieved that Mr Dalrymple in this interview comes across as possessing equanimity and constructive comment. Years ago, I remember gasping at his unrestrained pessimism week after week in his column in The Spectator (I was thinking that he must be paid to be so). Maybe, living in the midst of the French language, he cannot avoid a certain visceral joy- whatever the subject being discussed?

Fascinating.. the moment he heard a criticism of 'his' profession he backtracked and defended it! Lets get it right GPs over prescribe.. they are too willing to take the easy way out!why? Because the consequences are not theirs to pick up! I like him alot for all that!

I certainly dont buy the idea that healthcare prior to the NHS was quite good in this country. For ordinary working class it most certainly was not. I remember how it was for my Mum and Dad and their family. Possibly for Mr Dalrymple's family it was a different story.

Well the NHS is certainly unfit for purpose right now. Unless it's purpose is to waste millions on diversity and inclusivity managers, over-prescription of medicines and GP salaries of 100,000 pounds for three day weeks.

Dalrymple says "I don't think this kind of historical blame is useful." Although I think he is one of the most important modern intellectuals alive today, I think he has this completely wrong. Understanding First Causes, Root Causes & historical antecedents to contemporary problems is NOT merely an exercise in "historical blame". As the Santayana quote posted in front of Auschwitz attests: Those who forget the past are bound to repeat it. The warning is not only to remember, but also to UNDERSTAND. When Dalrymple misguidedly deflects this line of questioning by calling it "historical blame", he stops what is actually a crucially important attempt to understand the complex origins of how & why we have descended into the contemporary problems we face.

It's entirely proper to understand history, there is much to be learned by doing so. It's also entirely proper and possible to understand it whilst avoiding seeking blame by looking through present day views. We have to see history as a thing of it's time. The UK is in large part where it is today entirely because it looks to find a 'whipping boy' for everything it dislikes in life, rather than see the truth behind it's maladies and to then take responsibility for them.

We have ghetto's here, the fact that each different culture sticks together, in the work place. Some of the recruitment agencies are now international, which means they represent their people - east europeans. But I would be quite frank the agencies suck here, because the "women" are not capable of being professional, probably because they have a old bloke running the agency who does not give a toss, so there is no service to the person who is looking for work. Much like how the country is run. No service to the British people.
