This is my very first dining table build. The design is quite simple and modern but I wanted to give some detail with the joinery. The oak had some defects which I filled with epoxy which I think gives it more character. I'm also trying out the Mirka Deros orbital sander. This thing is amazing and did so well on the oak.

@@TheOffcut I think it is great you included some stuff that went wrong in addition to all the stuff that went right. That is fortunate you found the tear off. The repair in the video looks perfect. I couldn't see the problem at all, and I'm glad you can't tell the difference in person too.

Looks great! I see only one big problem.. The core of your boards should be alternating up and down. The board cores of the tabletop are almost all facing down, which will result in a majorly cupped top over time.. Maybe something to take into consideration next time! Besides that, great work!
@TheOffcut
@TheOffcut 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! For some reason I didn't think of that at the time. I think I was more concerned about the sides that looked best for the top. Which unfortunately made them all the same grain direction. It had moved slightly before putting the top on but screwing it to the legs pulled it back down without too much pressure. Only time will tell

I did a similar table using reclaimed mahogany and learned a couple things the hard way. One, you have to orient each tabletop board so you can plane the surface (1:38) in one direction. If not, the plane will gouge the surface... fill with epoxy later, but it's unsightly. The growth rings on your top boards (some up, some down) suggest they may cup later. That's a small fortune in tools. Facing the boards on a table saw is more properly done on a jointer. You should emphasize that any epoxy has to be absolutely well mixed. The blowtorch on the epoxy is to pop the bubbles that will rise up to the surface, but it's unnecessary if you're going to sand it later. Blind tenons on the legs would have left the completed table a little more attractive. Everyone's a critic... you did a nice job.

Looks great. Good detail. Clever trick covering the other side of your small pull saw with tape. I recently bought white oak from ititimspec - they organised for it to be D4S and jointed and shipped it to me in Wellington. A bit of a risk with humidity changes etc for a table I made but it seemed to cope well.

Quick question - for the leg assemblies, why did you glue the two pieces along their faces with the half laps in them, so that that internal pressure from the inserted apron side would push outward on the glue joint? If you glued the leg assembly before cutting out the mortise, then rotated the leg assembly 90°, you’d have the internal pressure from the tenon pressing outward on the actual grain of the wood rather than the glue joint, but would still get the same exposed joint look. Is there a reason you cut out the mortises (as half laps) before glueing up the legs? Ease of use? I know it’s easier to run them over the table saw rather than hack out with a chisel lol. Just curious if there was another reason you made that call that I’m not thinking about. Beautiful build and I appreciate your touches.
@TheOffcut
@TheOffcut 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It was purely because it was easier to cut and assemble that way. I'm not too worried about the joint pushing outwards on the glued face.

This was perfect as a vanity desk for me. kzfaq.infoUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr Especially the glossy finish. Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.
