I think it's less irony and more so the writers compelled to stress that Michael is not a complete monster. As bad as he can be, the character could never survive him being totally evil to a little girl just because she's Toby's.

Take Your Daughters To Work Day was the very 1st episode in which I actually liked Michael. When he showed the video of him as a little boy saying he wanted 100 kids so he could have a 100 people to like him. I started to love him when I realized how emotionally needy he was❤️

Season 2 is one my all time favorites of any show. It would have a different feel if binged in modern times, but back then when it was new and the whole look, tone and feel is so good. Something that was slowly lost every season after. 3 was close.
