Curve are extremely underrated, one of my favorite shoegaze bands. Saw them live a handful of times back in the early nineties. Garbage owes a huge debt to them for their whole vibe.
@whssy

Curve... was into them from the first EP. And every time I was supposed to see them live I got sick. I have 3 unused tickets from their early tours. Gave up after that. I think it was a cursed relationship! I ended up selling my Curve originals when I moved to Denmark in 94 - couldn't take everything with me. May even have given them to my sister actually. I can't remember. Ironically, my favourite "Curve" record is actually Toni's solo pre-Curve début LP, which I found really cheap after moving to Denmark! Dean also collaborated on it. Closest I ever got to seeing them live was seeing Debbie in Echobelly after she left the live band.

Greetings Hanna. Now I know why I can't acquire The Blurred Crusade on vinyl. You have them all! I am more than content with my cd though. I would love to get my hands on that Sisters of Mercy box, and will keep an eye out for it. Floodland my favorite. I assume that Sonic Youth has additional tracks, being a 2 lp set. Also one of my top tier albums from them. Congratulations on that Curve album! Looking forward to sampling some Bush Tetras and Dance Society. 10,000 subscribers! Until next time, take care.

As much as I like Garbage , I always recommend Curve to those who like the early records of Shirley & her gang. I was a big fan of Danse Society really liked Come Inside & Wake Up from that debut & the Stones cover. Nice underrated Sonic Youth album. @@ForARide I recall Half Japanese although I don't know their stuff that well. Moe has put out some fine music, hilarious stuff, too at times. I grew up in Levittown LI just like Moe! I met her at that show and bought her a Coke from the bar, which was hysterical. Imagine? It's like buying Lou a Coke, or Bowie, or whatever. I`m going with Dirty as my favourite Sonic Youth album too. Was one of the first to use the extra time available on a CD productively. No filler. Ever heard their 1988 Peel session of Fall covers? Three good versions of Fall classics. Bizarrely, the fourth track is a cover of the Fall`s cover of Victoria by the Kinks. The same year both bands contributed a track to the NME`s Sergeant Pepper tribute. Sonic Youth did Within You Without You, The Fall did A Day In The Life. BTW, a new Thus Love song just popped up on my YT recommendations - "Put On Dog".

I didn’t get into jazz until I was about 40. A neighbor who was a jazz player began sharing CDs with me and got me hooked onto Davis and it grew from there. Before the flood I had that 80s book, fun read. Great to see a Chills album in the back. I have found a few OGs from them, a favorite band.

Thanks, Steve! Well, I'll be 40 this year, so I guess our ages are the same for getting into jazz! Is my wallet happy about this? Hell no. That's awesome you have some OGs from the Chills. I bought the "Too Many Creeps" single by Bush Tetras when it was first released. It was constantly on my turntable. I was friends with Ed Bahlman of 99 records, their record label, he had a nice roster of artists on his label. Another big favorite of mine on 99 were ESG, highly recommended. I got into Curve when they first came out, thought they were unique and brilliant, don't think it was called shoegaze at the time, yet. "Moanin'" is one of my favorite jazz albums, definitely top 5 in that genre for me. Stay well, my wonderful friend. Hope this is great year for you.

Amazing finds Hanna. When u showed the Encyclopedia of New Wave my jaw literally dropped,It’s such an amazing book and love it to bits. It’s what got me into more bands The Fleshtones,Gene Loves Gezebel and Hoodoo Gurus to name but a few. After all these years I’m still new to Jazz but i do have albums like Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue but over the years I’ve branched out and got Jazz records here and there mostly Smooth Jazz which I’m a sucker for,Jazz Fusion and last year Free Jazz with Ornette Coleman which is where I wanted really wanted to start and from now on I’m open to getting anything.Come on Pilgrim is definitely something I need to add to the collection,I saw Pixies back in 2010 or 11 when they played Doolittle in its entirety with Kim Deal on bass and they put on a fantastic show and the best part was when they threw in other classics like Bone Machine and Dig For Fire for good measure..congrats on 10K ✌️😎🎶

Congratulations on so many viewers! Not surprising as your love of music is infectious. So many great buys. Excellent start to the year. You may know this already, but as disappointing as PIL's This is What you Want, it has an interesting back story. Keith Levine is not on the album but was there for the writing and is credited on the album. It was in fact re-recorded after he left. And before Lydon could get the album released Keith Levine self-released his version as a limited edition called Commercial Zone. He re-released it in 2014 so it might be available to find. It doesn't make the quality drop-off from Metal Box & Flowers of Romance any easier, but the chaos maybe explains what happened. Thanks again for sharing, great video.

He was a GREAT sideman on many Thelonious Monk albums. Monk is one of my 3 all time favorite musicians. I LOVE hard bop and can you guess why? LOL I know you can. Right! It's the closest to punk!!

Hi again, Willie! YES, Art Blakey is also my favorite jazz drummer....so far anyway. Still a bit early on in my jazz journey! Chris has a few Monk albums that I'll be checking out further and I have Straight, No Chaser. Haha, right on - hard bop has the edge and that's probably why I gravitate more to it, too!

Hey Hanna. Cool Bush Tetras box set - on my list for sure. I found their RIOR cassette Wild Things about 10 years ago in a thrift store and was amazed how good they are. that bass player was fantastic! Dirty is great, my second fave SY album after Sister-my fave song is Drunken Butterfly! That Narrow Adventure band has the two sisters from the 80's jangle band Wednesday Week. Congrats on Come on Pilgrim and Cuckoo, both are excellent!

Hey Hanna, nice stuff as usual... love Bush Tetras... Thurston More introduced them to me. I have a few collections... but that box looks tempting. Guided By Voices is a top 5 or so band for me, and yes i've kept up with almost everything Pollard does, which is kinda crazy i know. If you want an excursion related to Guided By Voices, that's not as daunting... look into Tobin Sprouts albums (starting with the early ones). To me Sprout is a HUGELY underrated songwriter and contributes a lot of the magic on those early/classic GBV's albums. He songs are very melodic, i think you would dig them because you dig power pop so much. And omg Overwhelming Colorfast, a blast from the past, I saw them twice in college, great unsung band. And congrats on the channel Hanna, well deserved!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Yep! That Miles set is beyond belief. I've barely been able to listen to more than two discs so far, of six, but it's easily some of his best work and that quartet with Herbie Hancock et al. was arguably as good as the first with Coltrane involved at times. Still not totally avant-garde but getting there, then by 69 to 70 Miles was crossing over to rock and fusion and funk etc. and even kind of space music. I also found a $20 copy of the Miles box set (a metal case one) Jack Johnson Sessions which is also great stuff, from the early 70s era. Found that at a LI record store not too known for jazz. Hi, Hanna. Congrats on the 10k. This means you are officially the the Queen of Indie & can have malefactors beheaded if you so desire. I didn't realize Cuckoo is so hard to find. Curve were probably the loudest group I've seen, spooked into being Godzilla loud by MBV most likely. This was during the Loudest War of the early 90s. The support act, whoever they were, had what looked like 10 people on stage, massed guitars, sax, samples, the kitchen sink. Curve, in dry ice so thick they couldn't be seen, bulldozed them utterly. Luckily I had one of those thick snotty head colds which cushioned my ears from the onslaught. I saw a little goth girl curled up under a chair with her fingers in her ears. Between each song Toni squeaked out a tiny, 'Thank you.' Goth wise, have you seen anything by Play Dead out in the wild? I played Dirty to death at the time. 'Drunken Butterfly' is my fave. Was thinking about this yesterday: Is Sonic Youth largely forgotten now? It seems that way to me. They're rarely mentioned anywhere. Mystic Nige predicts ... in five year's time this will be the Omaha Jazz Purist channel. The more variety the better, sez I. 2nd in the comment section. Woo hoo!

Coincidentally, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers was the first jazz album I bought after dipping my toes in the waters with the 1989 Blue Note 50th Anniversary CD box set. I thought I should listen to Jazz and I knew that Blue Note was a safe bet, and this box was a really great place to get a survey of the label. The 2nd CD has "Blue Train" from John Coltrane and "Mosaic" from the album of the same name from Art Blakey. So quite the place to start, IMO. If you haven't heard Mosaic yet, I heartily recommend it. 100% my favorite Blakey (I have three copies in my collection-- an OP stereo, a 1970's copy that is trashed, but is an RVG and a 1990's reissue). I think that they may have reissued this recently. For a long time you couldn't find it easily. I pulled the trigger on a grail at the beginning of the month. I've been a fan of the 1990's Boston band Tribe who were briefly on WB/Slash. Their debut full length Abort was produced by Gil Norton, who produced a lot of 4AD acts (Pixies, Lush, Pale Saints). The album was only available on vinyl as an import and I found a seller in the UK who had a really clean copy of it for Best Offer and they took my offer. Unfortunately, it is stuck in the UK at the post office due to a recent "Cyber Incident" that is affecting all Royal Mail shipments overseas. I have no idea when it will ship. Of note, Royal Mail is asking people to not ship from the UK internationally, so something to consider if you're looking at UK exported records.

Really great video Hanna, as always. Great advice on Sonic Youth and that looks like a very interesting Guided By Voices album. I absolutely love their tune "Everywhere With Helicopter". Can listen to that song over and over. Great description of the PIL record. I'm always partial to their debut. The song "Religion" is awesome, just great. Some great pickups.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed this video! With PiL I think my favorites are the debut and Metal Box. Groundbreaking stuff at that time! A GBV song that always gets stuck in my head is "Cheyenne." Pollard is really a master of melody! Cheers!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert I always enjoy your videos. Metal Box is very cool too. My 2nd favorite. I actually have the Metal Box initial press. Sounds like you do too. That's not too easy to find. Agree on GBV, when you listen to their stuff, several gems burst out here and there. They are very interesting. Stay well my friend.

I used to have Curve's first 2 albums "Doppelganger" & "Cuckoo" on CD...US versions on Charisma/Virgin, and yep, way ahead of their time...I know there was a 3rd album, forgot the title offhand, knew it was on Republic/Universal...and in the 80s, Toni Halliday was a solo artist, released a solo album on WTG/Epic, seek it out...they were the right band at the wrong time, about to break out & boom, Garbage came along and stole their thunder...another similar band I just LOVE is Lush!! And I never had that Overwhelming Colorfast, but def knew about it & may seek it out...Velvet Crush, love that record, they are/were(??) drummer Ric Menck's band...he played with Matthew Sweet...may have to seek out the reissue, thanks Hannah, hope u r well...oh I forgot, are you familiar with UK bands Skunk Anansie & Silverfish (and lead singer Ruby's more electronic/industrial solo stuff)...I think you may dig...lead singer of Skunk, her name is (just) Skin...amazing singer, and a fierce presence, black, bald, lesbian & their music mixes alt-rock/punk, soul, dance, reggae, electronic, tribal...totally unique & compelling & they were the "band of the future" in the movie "Strange Days"...I hope that intrigues you...and I'm reading Skin's memoir, compelling read...

Hi Lawrence! Thanks for the comment! Yeah, Lush is a band I adore, too...especially early Lush! Heavenly stuff! And yep, Menck is an out of this world drummer..one of my favorites! I got to see Matthew Sweet and basically the members of Velvet Crush served as his backing band! It was amazing. This was in the early 2000s probably right before Velvet Crush decided to hang it up. I am not familiar with Sunk Anansie or Silverfish, but shall do some sampling. I always appreciate recommendations! Cheers, my friend!

Hello! I'm glad you got to 10K subs, it's always nice to see a fellow Nebraska music enthusiast on the tube. So far this year I have got a new stereo to replace my old Pioneer. I have to find a place to send that off to get it repaired, but I'm not sure who does that. I also got a reissue of The Walkmen You and Me, one of my very favorite albums and I can't recommend it enough. Anyhow, is it snowing in Omaha? Here in Kearney it's coming down as fast as you can shovel it, so we closed up the shop early and went home. Have fun, stay warm out there!

Hi Jason! We really didn't get much snow here the other day. Maybe just a couple of inches even though earlier that day it was predicted we could get around 6". Haha. Hope you find a place that can repair your Pioneer in your area! Hope you didn't get hammered with snow out that way! Thanks!

Knowing your taste in music (I'm a huge GBV/Pollard fan- my favorite band of all time is GBV)- I'd say some great starting places for newer Guided by Voices are: Mirrored Aztec, Tremblers and Goggles by Rank, and It's Not Them It Couldn't Be Them It Is Them!. Also, their newest one releasing this Friday, La La Land, has some prog rock/psych pop brilliance, so that's also one I'd check out if you can! :)

Also, if you’re looking into some side/solo projects, I feel like you’ve love Bob’s album with Doug Gillard, “Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department”, Bob’s solo album “Waved Out”, and the Bob collab album with Tommy Keene (Keene Brothers). Power pop heaven! And if you’re a Big Dipper fan, Bob did an album with the vocalist called “New Theory of Everything” under the name Mars Classroom. My favorite project besides GBV is Boston Spaceships, the most Who-sounding project! “The Planets are Blasted” is my favorite, but you can’t go wrong with any Boston Spaceships.

Another great video - keep them coming. For Christmas this year I got the new Weyes Blood record, an original Fisherman's Blues, a 70s reissue of Astral Weeks and a UK original mono Safe As Milk. I have Some Girls Wander on CD but I have all the SoM original singles and EPs on vinyl up to Lucretia. That said I think they peaked before their first LP came out which I have a fully signed copy of from an instore in Leeds, UK when it was released. I would recommend Gift by The Sisterhood just in case it passed you by.

I think the Some Girls Wander comp. is probably best heard on vinyl anyway, like the old orig. 12" vinyl EPs etc. of the Sisters. I used to own all of them but not any longer, alas. Have Some Girls on the orig. CD box set at least I have a feeling it sounds warmer on vinyl, I dunno. On the other hand those records were made on rather a low budget!

There are mixed reviews on the quality of this reissued vinyl box set I have of Some Girls Wander By Mistake but since I have nothing else to compare it to except my Reptile House EP, which might sound a bit better actually, I don't have any major complaints and I'm quite happy to have this convenient set!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert i saw some of the Sisters box sets at Virgin Store several years ago but the prices were really high. The Floodland and First and Last ones. I bought all the 2 CD album reissues which are all worth owning of course. It pays to buy a lot of the old Sisters bootlegs since they were treasure troves of unreleased stuff, live and demos. "The Darks were in Milan" etc.

Danse Society - band from my home town. Their first single was packaged in the repro room next to the library at Barnsley Technical College (now Barnsley College, where Arctic Monkeys were formed), where my dad was head librarian. I managed to lose the library cassette copy of "Heaven is Waiting" on the bus home from high school in 1986.

Hey Hannah. Yeah well done to start the year. Most intrigued by those Urinals / 100 Flowers sides. Didn't know about those and love the band. Huge GBV fan so if you've ever need a recommendation let me know. You really don't need any of the recent (thousands) of records. My favorite is Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand (most will tell you those). Certainly on the lo-fi side. If you want something similar to Isolation Drills (more mid fi I guess) I would go with Under The Bushes Under the Stars, Universal Truths and Cycles or Earthquake Glue. take care!

I saw them when I was a teenager in concert In Valencia.
