The Once A Day Farmer

Yohan has come out from DairyNZ today to show me how to take some EDNA samples from a couple of water ways on farm to see what life is living in and around them. It's an interesting tool to see progress over time in all the riparian planting that I am doing which is hopefully going to increase over time.

You really are becoming quite the Ecologist now. Well done and hope the rain eases up for your cows.😊

Brilliant video Andrew. Proof that the vast majority of Farmers actually do care about the environment, I love how you are constantly trying to improve your farm and the flora and fauna. Keep it up Andrew and hopefully these people against farming will eventually take notice.

Good to see Andrew how young progressive farmers are moving the dial. Hope there isn’t too many carp. Growing up in Northland in the 50’s /60’s we never had any carp. When were they introduced into NZ. Up here on the Atherton Tablelands the rain has finally buggered off and sugar cane, maize and peanut harvest are in full swing.Interesting to see Fronterra has put the Australian operations on to the market

They are a massive pest, and the annoying thing is nothing is done to try and reduce numbers! i dont think carp go up the drains as far as where I put the samples so will be interesting to see if any turn up

@@TheOnceADayFarmer Same here in Australia. Former National Party Minister put on an embarassing performance about carp in our Federal Parliament. They were going to release a herpes type of virus to take them out BUT scientists couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't affect native fish as well so it never went ahead. Here in North Queensland we also have the Tilapia which is a pest as well. Bloody crocodiles not eating enough of them 😂

Why don’t you move the cows in the evening? That way you could see how the paddock looks in the morning and move them sooner if they’re damaging the paddock.

You can but it usually gets really mucky and muddy so would prefer on the cowshed instead. Have done it in the past at a push and didn’t work that great from my experience anyway

Super interesting, would be good to get some little bait traps from k mart or something and see what you can catch in your waterways then compare them to the results from the DNA

The next step, is electro fishing, so they walk down the water way with like a electric probe I think zapping the water and it stuns the fish which float to the top then they can check them out and release them again.
