There's a cow in one of the herds that has mastitis really bad and we need to identify and treat it ASAP!
Hi I'm Andrew, a 4th generation kiwi dairy farmer.
I work alongside my father on our family farm in one of New Zealand's dairy heartlands.
Follow me as I show you the day to day running of our farm and how our farming operation is much different than other parts of the world.

Hi from Colorado in the USA. I saw a comment about your channel on Tom Pemberton channel and thought I would check you out. I myself am a city girl born and raised in Denver, Colorado, but have lots of family that farm in Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Ohio. It is so interesting to see how things are done in different parts of the world. Also, to see the difference in climate.

Hi Betty, in 2015 I worked for a custom harvester that was based out of Kansas, I loved my time in the Midwest, people were really nice and was awesome to see how things work over there too. Blew me away how big the USA is, I think the whole of New Zealand fits into Colorado plus some! What video of Tom’s was the comment on? Someone else has said the same thing.

I don't understand what your market is, with you not milking year round. Jersey are known for their high milk fat production so I'm wondering what is your milk used for. and milking once a day? most dairy herds are milked twice a day and cows, given a choice, prefer 3 times a day on average. I'm also wondering how you don't catch mastitis before the claw is attached in the 2 - 3 squirts on the floor before the milking head is attached. I've just found your site so you may have already answered my questions' It was the farm killed 'beef' (can't really refer to a Jersey beef, but...) that caught my attention

Most of our milk is used for milk powder, NZ exports 95% of our dairy produce and supply the most on the export market globally. I think we have about 2% of the worlds dairy cows but have a small population. For a cow to be milked 3x a day you have to be feeding them a lot of food, our grass based system suits OAD milking with lower inputs and jerseys adapt to it really really well. We get the odd case of mastitis pop up from time to time. 👍

Do u find higher cell count with oad milking. Your dad is in good condition for a man that milked alot of cows in his day. Do you get i extra labour during the year or for calving.
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
We have been culling on SCC, to try and get it lower but yes it is a bit higher on OAD. Goal is to get under 150,000 for the season. Haha thanks I’ll definitely tell him that, and no we don’t get any extra labour. Unless we’re both away we will get a relief Milker in.

hey neighbour is 200,000 cell count a bit high or is that cause you milk jersey we try and aim for about 80,000 normally sits at about 110,000 we milk 380 jersey, Friesian and crossbred heard but mainly friesian jamie from otorohanga/te awamutu
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jamie, Yeah it’s a little higher than we would like, ideally we want to average under 150 for the season, currently 175,000 STD. And yes I think on OAD it probably does sit a little bit higher than normal. 110’s good tho! Nice to be having a better season than last year tho aye
