You have taught me Sooooo much, even though I play the viola! I almost quit orchestra, because I felt I wasn't good enough to be in it. These online lesson type videos along with my regular lesson at school saved my spot in the orchestra and I would like to thank you for being an online tutor like this :)

Lady teacher. We deeply appreciate your violin lessons. Because I play mandolin and tuning is the same, 40 days ago I bought a Cremona SV 175, which sounds pretty cute, and I can already run several classic bluegrass songs. The only drawback is that you still so pretty, I see first ecstatic the whole video, and only in the second view I do running the violin. That said respectfully. Best regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina, José Luis. God bless you,

Hello, I'm starting from scratch. And right now, my playing frequently imitates the cry of a dying whale. xD Anyway, in the video, I notice that you rotate the bow along its length (from one side of the hair to the other) as you move it up and down. Is this something we should/could do? Does it help with some aspect of playing the violin?

well if you feel comfortable with the 1st position notes, then go ahead and have a look at it - it wont hurt as you can still be learning all the other stuff as well.

If you say the hair even when tightened is still ver ver close to the wood and more so when you actually play, then it sounds like you need a new bow im afraid. Dont take my word for it as i cant actually see it as im only going on what you say. If you can post a picture on my facebook page (the online piano tutor) then i will tell you straight away.

You're awesome! Your videos are soooo helpful! I am taking lessons (in Canada) with a teacher, but I love using your videos as a complement or to address a specific question or problem between lessons. I am learning as much from you as I'm learning from my teacher! Your lessons are clear and I like that you don't touch more than one topic at a time. THANK YOU so much!!!!

keep the bow flat. This is something that you will develop in time, but something i do now after 27 odd years of playing. Dont worry about it as it will come naturally. I do it because a) i dont really notice im doing it now and b) i cant not do it! lol

When you add more pressure, it sounds more bluegrass than the classical sound. Is it possible both can be right, depending on which style of music you're going for?

that is a result of you not moving to the right angle for the individual string so you dont hit other strings. It doesnt sound like a bow problem to me.

I'm finding that I have a lot of tension in my left hand (especially the thumb) and I was wondering if maybe I'm pressing the strings too hard with my fingers? Do you have a tutorial or discussion about that? Thanks!!

@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 жыл бұрын
+ladyeclectic No i dont - as I cant video the amount of pressure or have any kind if gauge as its on camera. I also cant comment on what you are doing as I would really need to see you. Its one of those subjects that needs hands on tutorial. Pretty much everything else I have a video on! Sorry

Ladyeclectic; I’m just a newbie but I would think if you push on the strings too hard you probably would be able to move your hand up and down the fingerboard as easily, I would think it would actually slow you down. I have the same problem. I think I’m just pushing down too hard on the strings.

Hi Alison, I am not getting the pleasant sound I want. I think it has to do with my bow. Compared to yours, mine does not have a 'gap' to place my thumb in and the horse hair is very close to the wood of the bow even if its tight. Just some pressure can cause the horse hair to touch the wood. I'm getting a very scratchy sound. Should I consider getting a better bow or do you think it just needs more rosin? They said they pre-rosin the bow extensively before sending it off though.

How much slack do I give violin strings when restring? If im restring g, i go to d peg, and sometimes I'll get 1-2 wraps and sometimes a string pop but if violin strings makers would make a 9 gauge set, 🤟🏼👌🏼👌🏼

No need to touch the violin strings once they are tuned up. Just re-tune them if necessary before each practise session if they have gone out of tune slightly.

First, thank you so much for your videos, they're helping me a lot in learning the violin. But something this happens to me and I dont know if it's a problem of my bow or the way I play. When in the same bow I play a note in the A string and then a note from the E string, the violin makes a very high sound, very loud. If you know what It is and could help me, I would be really happy :)
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 7 жыл бұрын
Its your bow, You need to make sure you have good contact with the bow on the strings - especially the E otherwise you will get a high pitched screaming sound on the E.

Pedro Pivatto i had that issue, and solved it in three ways:i bought a better E string (my teacher told me to do it), I payed attention not to touch the E string with the fingers when playing the A string (i had to change my hand position so that if i looked at my left hand i could see more of the finger side and less from its front side), and I applied more pressure as alison says (i'm always lacking bow pressure). I hope it helps!

I have been having this problem and I am not sure if it's a result of my rosin or pressure. I have ordered Hindershine rosin and will eventually get the Pirastro as I have dominant strings. Also find it scratchy when moving onto other strings.

Idk how!! If you reply this would be a life saver I have a class tomorrow. If you don’t reply that’s ok because I guess I’ll have to face my fear and ask the teacher.

Your son should now be playing on something much better. The Stentors are great starters, but thats it and it will l only hinder him from now on. He will be playing and learning new techniques that the violin just cant cope with. You must get something in good time before the exam though as he will need time to get used to it. If you are anywhere near Suffolk, try Woodbridge Violins, mention my name and Russell with make sure you have something appropriate - call first though....

yes - sadly, thats very bonkers indeed :) He needs to try and dont go to a music shop where they 'order' them in as thats another bonkers thing people like to do! Search Google and see if there are any violin repairers about as they usually sell and repair etc violins or will at least point you in the right direction....

What do I have to do to not make the wood touch the strings, is it because the hair is to tight or the way how I bow.

Well I cant see your bow so I cant really say whats happening for sure but it might be that its too loose, or too tight and have not turned the silver knob at the end enough, or too much or you are bowing too hard.

Hi Alison! I have seem to have just bought a G.A.P. Fretzschner violin bow and I seem to be having trouble with bouncing the bow, it seems to make sort of a crunchy and unbalanced sound when the bow hits the strings, and I already tried whipping the rosin off the strings, and I know that bow hold is correct, and I have a bent thumb in my bow hold, so I'm wondering if you have any thoughts?
