This physics video tutorial explains how to make an electromagnet using a steel nail, copper magnet wire, sandpaper, and AA batteries. It also explains two things that you can do to increase the strength of the magnetic field produced by the electromagnet.

I'm an old man, who was an average h.s. student and who has now followed you threw many of your pre-calc and calculus videos...just want to thank you for your effort. You are one of a few excellent teachers around. Thanks.

Organic chemist you have a power source going through a conductor I would expect the wires to get hot without a resistance in the circuit

Professor Organic Chemistry Tutor, thank you for a practical video/lecture on How to make a simple Electromagnet in Applied /Engineering Physics. The whole idea of Physics is to show how things work on planet earth. This is an error free video/lecture on KZfaq TV with the Organic Chemistry Tutor

that hitting was awkward each time and somewhat funny but there's no room for siliness when it comes down to experiments. great work. anybody can make this work at home. thanks

Is it possible to increase the strength to the point where it can pull chainsaws into the air from a couple meters away? Thanks!

thats oddly specific...

Probably not as most chainsaws aren't entirely ferromagnetic but it's possible to pull a chainsaw from a few inches away assuming you have a neodynium supermagnet as their strength decreases exponentially the further they get from the magnet itself (warning: neodynium supermagnets are very dangerous and have caused numerous amputations so it is highly recommended you don't try this)

Friend; "to use" 'aight. Just be careful with the magnets; they can trap your hand if you're reckless

You can also do the reverse and use a large object in a magnetic field to generate current which is more practical

Please tell me can use this experience to detect the presence of antimony in a rock instead of iron ,would u pls help me how to do thks in advance.

I quite liked your demonstrations; they were very dramatic. I did not know there could be insulation over the copper wire when wrapped around an iron core. So that insulation does not reduce the strength of the magnetic field? I noticed that you said that you used direct current in the demonstration; I think that it would be nice to see a demonstration with an AC source too!

@@TheOrganicChemistryTutor can you help me find an ac power source for an induction heater and determine the watts, volts etc needed or help put together an induction heater? This might be a great experiment for your students too? How can I contact you for help with an at home project? Thanks!
