Guys. (Angle in degrees) mod 90. If its in quad 2 or 4 then take that result and get the compliment from 90. ie, -240deg mod 90 = 30, its in quad 2, so reference is 60. Way faster and easier to do in your head.

The reference angle is in reference to the negative x-axis or the positive x-axis. In degrees it is either 180 or 0(same as 360). In radians, the negative x-axis is pi and the positive x-axis is 0(same as 2pi). It is too much work to convert to degrees then convert back again. For 8pi/9, it is just 8/9 of pi, which is 1/9 pi away from a full pi, putting it in the second quadrant.
@azk1776
@azk1776 4 жыл бұрын
So the reference angle of 8/9 pi is 1/9 pi. No need to convert to degrees. Think of the quadrants in pi instead of degrees.

8:42 I think the reference angle for 3π/5 is 2π/5, like you show, but all your examples (except for this one) are only one π degree away from each other. So 8π/9 is only π/9 away from 9π/9. The example with 3π/5 is the only one where you have two "pi steps" away from 5π/5, because 3 is 2 away from 5. So π/5 is a reference angle also, but only as a reference guide... you would eventually count π/5 twice to go from 5π/5 to 3π/5, and that would equal 2π/5. All this to say... I think the π/x number is a guide, but not the actual reference angle. This video made me realize we need to be just a little bit careful when answering questions on exams if the denominator is slightly different than what we're used to, is that right?
