DEDICATED TO THAT AMAZING TALENT THAT WAS ANDY ROURKE.
RIP Andy, you beautiful soul. 19th May 2023.
Broadcast on The Tube 1984
About the shit crowd - coz everyone goes on about it....
THIS WAS NOT A SMITHS GIG!!!!
The Tube was a TV show that had several bands appearing on one night! The show's bands were chosen at short notice. I only found out the day before, and the tickets were all gone. Sold locally to the good citizens of Newcastle, where the show was filmed. At the time, the band were only big in Manchester and London...
The audience didn't know who they would see. The Smiths were almost unknown at the time. The crowd were not fans (apart from a very few). The only song the rest of the crowd knew was This Charming Man, if they had seen it on top of the pops a few months earlier.
Now, for all those who say they'd have been dancin their socks off... Can you remember the first time you heard a Smiths song (or indeed any really fantastic track)? Did you suddenly start moshin as if your life depended on it? No! You thought vaguely "these sound pretty good. What's their name, I think I'll buy their record?". That's what this crowd were thinking....
When the beatles played their first few gigs at the Cavern, were they mobbed by hundreds of screaming girls? No, coz no bugger knew them yet....
They just hadn't earned it yet baby!

Perhaps more credit would be given if they weren't such elitists. Not that many bands or artists aren't but Morrissey is known for his cocky I'm better than you attitude. The rest of the band did have to live in his shadow. He saw himself as 4/5s of the band with Mars taking up almost all of the remaining 1/5. A good lyricist but a lame human

@burrenmagic 4 жыл бұрын
@mc coolargeINITIALLY you'll feel that the Smiths is just Johnny because his guitar and sound is so incredible and you won't care much for what Moz is singing. But then, what he's singing will sink in and you'll be in stitches at his wit and irony etc. The guy wasn't a musician as such, but his ability as a lyricist was phenomenal.

This is one of the reasons why I love The Smiths; they would play the most funkiest, upbeat tunes but the lyrics would be on a different spectrum, that's where the real music is at. I heard they do this on purpose as a way to make fun of themselves and I don't think a lot of people catch that, which makes them so great!

One of my all-time favourite basslines, and Rourke plays it faultlessly on this recording. I must've watched this clip about 50 times over the years, but I never tire of it. Went to see them quite a few times in the early days, and once stole Morrissey's daffodils out of his back pocket when they were coming off stage (tenuous claim to fame, there!)

When I first heard this years ago I was amazed how good it was musically and lyrically. I've never researched the song but to me it was a play on the famous slogan Socialism or Barbarism and the often xenophobic saying charity starts at home. Knowing Morrissey it's probably more an ironic play on the latter. The former struck more of a chord with me as I think I was reading Lenin at the time.
