I first played through the game at 13 to 100% completion so when he said people were struggling with the artifacts online I was actually a little surprised. And he's right, if you know what you're doing you can gather the artifacts, save like 3 of them, before getting the Phazon suit. Really saves time with each new playthrough.@@arcticpossi_schw1siantuntija42

My main issue wwith the artifact quest, at least from my first playthrough, is that Metroid Prime already feels like it encourages back and forth around the planet more than other Metroid games. Some backtracking isn't bad, and the blow was definitely softer when i replayed the game as Remastered came out, but it's still a factor to keep in mind Knowing this, the artifacts can feel like yet another backtrack trip through the same rooms you've been through so many times. Though being able to get them early helps a TON with this The concept itself is really cool and could be brought back to Prime 4, but there's a few things that'd need to be tweaked for players to not see it in such a negative light

my first playthru of the game i naturally found a few artifacts here and there. I saw the Artifact diagram and thought, wow that is a lot of artifacts than must be for game completionists maybe on my second playthru I will deliberately hunt for them all to see what happens when I get them. Turns out they are not optional. After struggling with the omega pirate I was so ready for the game to be over. I was a little annoyed when I found out I had to back track the entire planet to get them all. Now that I am more mature I understand your arguments for them and find them convincing, I will keep that in mind for my second playthru

I think the artifact hunt is pretty cool, especially for a first playthrough where you need to decipher clues to find where all these artifacts are, and I think it's cool how many of them can be obtained early, but I do wish that almost all of them could be obtained on a first visit through the area if you knew where to look. I think it would be a cool way of letting experienced players breeze through a part of the game that might discourage replays otherwise.
@speedude0164
@speedude0164 3 ай бұрын
Yeah I think the biggest problem is that so many of them force you to get them really late, so it ends up breaking the pace. It would've been better to spread them out more evenly throughout the game's progression, therefore people can focus on collecting them while they look for the upgrades.

Wholeheartedly agree with this hunt not being too bad. The Chozo Artifacts weren't even that bad because you could start hunting them very early on in the game and note to stop by every time you stop by the Landing Site. Now, Prime 2, that game's endgame key hunt was muuuch worse. Because of that, Prime 3 dialed it back quite a bit.

I loved the artifact hunt because I loved exploring and looking for secrets and items; I actually found several of the artifacts early on my first playthrough just by paying attention and going out of my way (which I did a lot of because it was fun), and I loved deciphering the clues to find the last ones.

I've always just done the 100% item cleanup before the Omega Pirate, between having just gotten the X-ray visor and Plasma Beam, with plasma being the main 100% item locking key, it just made sense to me. Especially with the Newborn artifact being the only thing that needs the Phazon suit, and also being in the mines, and with how difficult the Omega Pirate can be. Another thing, if you go to the artifact temple early, then some of the totems aren't active, meaning you have to come back for those clues, which I always found wierd.

One fan hack that does the end game macguffin really well is the gate system in Hyper Metroid. Unlike in Prime 1, you’re required to unlock the first gate before you can progress. This let the player know that they exist and are hidden throughout the planet. Not only that, but you can collect the majority of them while exploring normally, and the remaining 4 that you can get yet is hidden behind creative puzzles using the final power up.

I really enjoy the Artifact quest actually, to the point that I've memorized the name and location of each. I think one of the biggest reasons for this is just how much I love the world of Tallon IV. Every area is so visually distinct from the others and provides a unique atmosphere you can easily get immersed in. Especially with how ridiculously gorgeous it is now with the remaster, I'll gladly take any excuse to give the planet another tour. Although this next point admittedly only works if you read the Chozo lore, I also love how organic the discovery of this quest is. There are no cutscenes or artificial barriers to lead you to this information. By exploring the world, you learn of the existence of an ancient Chozo civilization and of the Artifacts they possessed, you discover the Artifact Temple itself and learn of its role as a seal for the Great Poison, you learn of the Artifacts' role as keys to that seal that would be assembled by the Entrusted One foreseen by the Chozo to reach the core and purge the Great Poison, and you come to understand that the Entrusted One is none other than you and that it's up to you to locate the hidden Artifacts and assemble them to reach the source of Phazon and destroy it. Whether it be information or magic items, the pieces of this puzzle are spread throughout the world, and it's up to you to assemble them. You start the adventure knowing nothing about this Chozo civilization and their conflict, and you finish it by carrying out their mission and saving their home. It's also worth noting that the existence of the Artifact quest brought us one of the most iconic, beautiful and atmospheric locations in the series with the Artifact Temple. I have several screenshots of it from my last Prime Remastered playthrough and I'm still having a hard time deciding which one to make my new desktop background.

I always wondered why the Artifacts were kept separate from gear. Every time you scan the world, there is lore. I agree with the idea of connecting gear with artifacts. Giving a boost to everything you experience Retro had a unique concept going with this in mind. Even in 2&3. It is a different experience. But adds incentive to keep you exploring.

That last point reminded me of Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, where to get the master sword you gotta give up your vitality, wich to be successfull has to be above a certain number of hearts Imagine if the Mcguffins are the energy tanks, you need a certain number of them to charge a device or something, normal playthroughs would need to backtrack, speedrunners and sequense breakers could do it mid journey, etc

After hearing your thoughts, think its openness is why it ends up with different feelings for different players. I loved being given another excuse to go around the planet. Loved following the hints The problem with the Sky Temple Keys was that I had a massive break in the middle of playing it (around sanctuary fortress) so I forgot the key bearers’ existed and had to resort to a guide It depends how players came across this quest line how they’re going to feel about them Also, the pirates having artefacts is explained by one of the logs saying that they found some and they’re working to try and destroy them to open the seal

To be clear: I am not saying this should necessarily be done, I just found it to be an interesting idea. Metroid Prime DLC: After the omega pirate is defeated and you get the phazon suit a wall collapses, revealing natural tunnels loaded with phazon. In other words, the mother load the pirates were trying to mine. Inside you find native creatures and rogue space pirates who have been mutated and mutilated by the phazon. In the end, you find a boss (maybe a monstrous chozo ghost thing?) From it you get more lore, and you get a beam weapon that is based on the attacks chozo ghosts use. (Something like a mix of power and wave beams?) And a missile combo for it.

Now I'm imagining Samus stopping to pick up a souvenir at a gift shop in the middle of a countdown sequence at the end of the game. I know I'm weird, but I never had a problem with stuff like the Chozo artifacts or Wind Waker's triforce shards. Like, I bought the game to explore the world. Revisiting old areas with new gear that lets you access areas you couldn't before feels good. The part that annoyed me about it was the Chozo ghosts. At first they were cool, but they just respawn, cut the lights, and sometimes lock the doors any time you walk through that room again. That part gets tedious fast.

The thing that makes the artifact hunt less annoying, in my honest opinion, is the fact that you can collect the artifacts as you play the game before you get the Phazon suit. You're pretty much just limited by your lack of upgrades. But with each one you acquire, it opens up the opportunity for you to backtrack and grab those artifacts before you get to the end of the game. You can grab the first one right after you land on Tallon IV in the artifact Temple. You can grab two of them in magmore caverns once you get the super missiles and the space jump boots respectively, etc. I understand the frustration that a newer player might have who doesn't have the locations of the artifacts memorized necessarily. But in the Chozo Temple, you can scan each of the Chozo statues and they'll give you hints as to where the artifacts are located anyways. So it isn't impossible to get them early even if you're new to the game.

Maybe have it so that the Phazon Suit _is_ the key. Have it so that if you try to go into the Impact Crater before acquiring the suit, you get a warning message that the radiation levels are too dangerous. And massively expand the crater into a proper, for lack of a better term, dungeon to give you plenty of opportunities to test out the suit.
@speedude0164
@speedude0164 3 ай бұрын
I kinda wonder if that was the original intention. The elevators in the Phazon Mines show you getting closer to the bottom of the crater, and apparently there used to be lore about the Pirates discovering Metroid Prime while mining. Would this then mean that there's no Meta Ridley fight, or at least that it happens before Phazon Mines Level 3?

I just beat Prime for the first time last year, and I didn't really find the artifact hunt to be that intrusive. Honestly, some of my favorite moments in Prime is just wandering around, and stumbling upon something by pure chance. This happened to the first artifact I got, and like you said, the hints give you plenty of information to figure out what you need to have, and where to get them (Prime 2 practically tells you where its mcguffins are). I understand why people might not like this sort of thing, but I found it to be a good opportunity to find some other pickups I might've missed from not having the proper ability (or just overlooking it).

I think there is a way to make the artifact more engaging. While playing Ghost Recon Wildlands the idea came to me, that instead of artifact's we could hunt down Pirate leaders inside their hide outs. Upon defeating a Pirate leader you receive a weapon upgrade as well as their security code. After collecting enough security codes you can break into the Pirate Stronghold. Collecting more security codes than needed allows you to use those codes on other things like taking over security systems. Of course this is just a general blueprint of my idea, what do you think?

What I think the problem was for me, was the number of artifacts and how the scan log worked with them. You could not get the scan log if you had acquired the artifact. This means if you wanted that 100% log 100% items you had to do more backtracking. I can't remember if the remaster changed this but it was one thing that came to mind of small changes I would of liked. That was you don't feel punished for collecting them early without the clues.

The sky temple keys and energy cells were improved in Prime 2 and 3. I would have to disagree on this. Once you get the Space Jump, basically every new player is going to come across the impact crater. In prime 2, you will be notified of the sky temple when getting the seeker missiles and about halfway through Prime 3 they tell you about the Valhalla. What sucked about this was the lack of fast travel which Prime 2 and 3 had. Dread and Samus returns had good ones too.

So, the way I always interpreted the scavenger hunt at the end of Prime 1 and 2 was like... The kind of person who picks up a metroid game is the kind of person who likes scouring the map for collectibles, and the hunts are an 11th hour excuse to go do that. Ya know what'd be really sick, is if they managed to hide a skip for the artifact hunt behind cool movement tech; like if there was a wild shinespark chain you could or some shit.

The whole thing about not being able to utilize late-game abilities has another, more fun remedy than artifact hunts. In Super Metroid, Lower Norfair, the second to last area in the game, has only one key item, the Screw Attack, which you get really early on, then the rest of the game is exploring two new areas, with several minor upgrades like missile expansions, utilizing every major ability you’ve already gotten in new places with new, tough enemies. Something like that would have made the Prime series not need an artifact hunt. Imagine if, instead of having to hunt for artifacts before entering the impact crater in Prime 1, the impact crater area itself was bigger, had multiple places to explore, areas of weak phazon that your Phazon Suit can protect you through, and several minor upgrades, and had a wider variety of enemies rather than just the metroids. This would have given you ample time to use the Phazon suit to your heart’s content before challenging the final boss, while also making the finale seem less like a boss rush due to an intermediate area between Meta Ridley and the Metroid Prime.

Oooh boi, how could you say something so controversial but still so true. When I first did the Artifact hunt all those years ago I saw it as a victory lap across the game world with a fully powered Samus, it was cathartic. And then there was the fact that the developers were giving players one last exam to see if they paid attention to the world, the clues were nice in being clear but not giving coordinates outright. So the endgame became an oxymoron of mindless fun mixed with a good brain teaser. The trilogy was so fun for this and I do like your idea of any future games incentivising players to seek out the mcgruffins by having them power up Samus even just a bit.

I am honestly fine with the Chozo Artifacts in Prime1. They are especially satisfying to collect on new playthroughs once you've memorized where they are. ....What I cannot tolerate are the Sky Temple Keyes in Prime 2. The challenges to collect them are cool but I hate how the game gives you very vague clues on how to find them and it doesn't help that it's done on Prime 2, a game with worse over-world navigation imo.

Maybe my opinion doesn’t count since I used a guide since my first time playing, but I’d say the artifacts are probably the least bad in the series. The worst is the Ing keys since it’s so difficult to find them, and you can’t see them with the correct visors. First time playing I had no idea what to do until I looked it up a guide on the keys. I think they’re worse because it’s easy to get lost and the world in Prime 2 is so large. I also heard people say how they dislike the energy cells in Prime 3 and I agree with that. They feel a little weak compared to the rest and oddly enough you only need like 5. And why they’re so weak is that while they are needed to beat the game it mainly consists of opening some doors and elevators. It also often wondered why the Federation couldn’t just provide a few spare cells or why the space pirates would leave such an important weapon behind at a place they attacked. It would be like if the enemy attacked a navy ship and just left the codes for their nukes behind for everyone to find.

I played Metroid Prime R recently and I was honestly not a fan of the artifacts. I found out you had to collect all of them before facing the final bosses and just kind of sighed, looked up a guide, and got it over with while following it. I still don't like it too much since, in theory it sounds great but it can be a monotonous task with all the backtracking through a ton of rooms (especially the ones with enemies). The puzzles in the rooms were kinda fun at least, though. I think one way they could've fixed this was to, instead of making it a REQUIREMENT, they could instead allow you to face the final two bosses but you'll have to face some kind of penalty, kind of like if you don't collect all items in the game, you don't see Dark Samus rising from MP's remains, maybe if you don't collect all the artifacts you could get a bad ending like in Prime Hunters. The only way to get a good ending being collecting the artifacts. A problem I could see here is that it could interfere with the lore, but there's already a huge plot hole about how a Metroid even got into the Impact Crater in the first place, is it too much of a stretch to say the universe's best bounty hunter, Samus Aran, couldn't do the same without the artifacts?

Honestly my biggest issue with the artifacts isn't even the artifacts themselves, but rather that they really exacerbate how bad the backtracking is in Prime 1. Echoes sky temple keys are arguably worse but aether is much easier to actually traverse. In Prime there aren't enough elevators or secret entrances to areas which makes it take forever to get from one place to the other. I sincerely believe that if more travel options had opened up by the end of the game this hunt wouldn't have been an issue, but magmoor caverns especially is really guilty of this issue

Artifacts hunting in Prime sucks. I wish it's was implemented more organicaly in the game structure.

The artifact hunts on Prime 1 and 2 really brought the games to a screeching halt for me, but I didn’t mind it in Prime 3 because of how it’s implemented earlier in the game and you only need a few of the artifacts, rather than all of them, to open the critical path.

I played only remaster and yes, I found artifact hunt tedious. It would be much better in my eyes if there was less of them to collect and if they were more integrated into world. Like hidden in special shrines (which most of them do!) But without those random ones. They look also like some random shiny pickups. It's ok for health or ammo pickups because we're used to video game logic, but from important story items I expected more. It would help if there was some kind of fast travel as well, at least connect all elevator rooms together. I already conquered the areas, why do I need to do it again and again but easier? Lastly final area was a disapointment. Dark, kinda boring looking cave without cool challenges or new mechanics with a random boss at the end. Don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed the game, the issues are the effect of 20years old game design philosophy and this times limitations

I'm neutral on the subject. I get your arguments, but as some people said, Prime already had a lot of back and forth throughout the game, and it was slow going through all the same rooms again and again and again. If they had had better connections between areas, it'd been better. So, suddenly 'oh, you need these artefacts!' well, that's just another trek through rooms you've already explored (just oops, you missed X cause hahaha) fighting the same enemies that have lost the challenge and now are just annoying to face. But just going into a boss rush end would have felt wrong and having something to do with the Phazon Suit was needed.

I liked it in Prime., but hated the equivalent in Wind Waker. partially I think it's because of expectations. Wind Waker isn't a game that really expects you to constantly be exploring and searching for side collectibles whenever, being much more focused on self-contained dungeons and narrative despite the vast open world. so when you're forced to do so it's a jarring crash to the momentum of the plot and core gameplay you expect. For Metroid, Exploring and searching for collectibles is like... the entire game. It doesn't feel like a momentum halt because nothing actually changes in what you're doing or how you're engaging with the game. The way you have to find them with hints is also great, testing how well you know this world you've been exploring, it feels like a proper final exam of what the game is all about.

the scavenger-hunt is the best part of metroidvanias. whether it be the main upgrades, minor items or plot mcguffins. i've never understood the mindset of skipping parts of it.

You mean you backtracked? I just found them on my playthrough regularly. Only ever made it into the crater itself though, never finished the final boss

Yeah, no. I played Prime 1 for the first time last year, and the Artifacts are entirely unnecessary. I would gladly just proceed to the final bosses and not complain. I was entirely blindsided by them near the end, and even with a guide, my 12 hour run became a 15 hour run purely because of these things. Backtracking was already the weakest part of the game, especially with all of the damage sponge enemies that respawn and take SO damn long to deal with, especially when you get lost due to the map sometimes being unclear. I eventually just grabbed a one-hit kill cheat to reduce my time dealing with bullshit, and I'm probably gonna do my entire Prime 2 run with one of those because it was a lot more fun. That dude you gotta fight for one of the artifacts went down like that sword guy in Indiana Jones, it was kinda funny. But yeah, the artifacts quest just laid all of Prime's flaws bare to me. Didn't ruin the game, but got pretty damn close.
