Good video. I liked that you highlighted different industries and got professionals within them to share some of their thoughts.

So what is the difference between OR and Industrial and systems engineering??
@Vishvamkts3 жыл бұрын
I would say, Industrial and systems engineering is related to applications of OR in manufacturing environment. Applications could include, inventory management, job shop scheduling, demand forecast, maintenance optimization etc. using OR tools. Whereas, OR in itself is a much wider field of mathematics.

This is not a video about "What is OR". Yes, it is incredibly useful - but what is it?

In a nutshell OR is all about applying analytical methods to solve business problems. A more practical approach to data science, in other words.

Lately, I read an article about how OR can help in materials science research but couldn't really make out how it can actually be helpful. Pursuing a degree in the science itself, I would love to know if there is a scope to mix the two field of study. Can someone help me understand how OR can be helpful in Materials Science research? P.s. The video is a brilliant intro to OR. Thanks!

Sarthak Kapoor That honestly made me think, OR in materials science. I'm exposed to OR but I've only used it for optimization of costs and output, supply chain management, and assignment models. The only thing I could think for that is optimizing the amount of certain chemical mixtures that involves constrains in their amounts that would make it cheapest but within the desired mixture quality. Basic linear programming is the mathematical model. that's all, maybe you already know this.

I have completed b.sc in mathamatics and i have no idea how to start career as OR analyst. Can any one help me, i realy want to do that...
@salmanaleem41896 жыл бұрын
BSc Maths can be a good foundation in starting OR but first I recommend doing MS OR from a good university. OR is blend of Maths, Stats & Computer Science. You have to be a good analyst and your ability to use Statistics with modern packages in R, Python, VBA would be critical. There are three parallel tracks in OR namely Data Analysis, Optimization and Simulation Analysis. An OR analyst generally learn these three skill in first year of course work. The second year is more applied in nature culminating in Thesis.

"There has never been a better time to be an operation researcher" I have an Msc degree from logistics engineering (very focused on OR). Well it seems it will never be my profession. I have never met any manager who actually has heard about OR at all. I think its just only a kind of academic science you can learn at the college or university then forget after graduation. Because I like OR I still spend time reading OR books and studying different kind of problems and I solve them but you know they are just books with standard OR problems and not really representing real life problems. It would be great to find a job where I can change my theoratical knowlegde into practice but the OR consultant companies wont hire anyone without experience or as I mentioned an average company manager just dont know it. Im 33 and still just working as production engineer without any chance to being something more. "Learn something new" - they say. Change your carrier" - they say. And when you decide to change: "You have no experience!". They almost treat me like a little guy fresh out from the college however Im an experienced production engineer.
