Hey, moved home / demo space so we’ve had the whole system On bits. Calibrating the theory today! Main thing to note is theory is really designed or 7.1 channels systems. So we are kinda doing things it’s not designed for. The outright sound quality is excellent so far.

The technique is getting the matched LCR to sound each the same as they are not in the same xyz 3d space they are spread and spaced apart and this can take days to achieve with the EQ to correct bass LF and HF horns. HF horns is the trickiest as no CD is going to sound the same, kinder like playing the card game "snap" when two cards are mirrored the same. The CD and horn look the same but the odds on the diaphragm being 100% is very remote. Can EQ them to be close but simple fact there just isn't enough PEQ. Most PEQ may have 9 bands some others like Behringer FBQ2496 has 20 PEQ and that still isn't enough. Daisy chain channel A to channel B that then give you 40 PEQ but still not enough and the microphone has to be placed very close to each LCR horn on the bench while they are tuned and may take x2 FBQ296 linked together to give 80 PEQ as the FBQ has very narrow Q bandwidth to very wide bandwidth and the PEQ filters is like woodwork with sandpaper to sand down the uneven peaks and between common cinema HF horn crossover at 500Hz thou I tuned my JBL 2445 JBL 2380A to 303Hz still got use the PEQ below the crossover and extreme upper highs and get the CD aligned so all common three are within a few fractions of 1dB or less than 0.5dB which is hard to hear? The REW is going to show it all on the frequency sweep Overlays, if they all line up over one and the other with No smoothing applied. It is a tricky task and can take days to do it manually, Never mind about auto-EQ that is for rushing the job and never gets it right. Aligning a CD horn must go though many checks. 1) test tone pink noise get a wide response in the 250Hz 300Hz to 20.000KHz 2) checking with sine wave does the CD make any distortion noise? This will be due to misaligned with phase-plug and the voice coil and may need the screws loosened and tiny careful wiggling the diaphragm while listening and observing the RTA as the mic is going to be close to it and looking for at the fundamental sine wave - while above it are some harmonic frequencies and once the diaphragm is aligned the harmonics will vanish and the fundamental toe sounds pure and undistorted.. 3) playing the sine wave tones and at different SPL dB and pink noise up to 110dB (while wearing earplugs during this phase) 4) playing a movie content while CD horn are on the bench to see how it handles with multitude of sound frequencies. Onne all CD horns have been checked they can be fitted behind the screen. 1) place microphone close to the screen, on axis with horn. Best way is use a cheap audio mixer with x6 or x12 more XLR inputs this is to make alignment easy even though it can still take days. The CD horn is going to behave differently with a screen or even tested on the bench with a fabric placed in front of the horn. The screen is different a degree of the sound is going to have some + factor and - factors some frequncuies will be slightly boosted while others have less and it will be the task of another PEQ to correct Yes that is a lot of PEQ and frankly I find it a bit frustrating that there will be bundles of PEQ in a rack. Can't a manufacturer make a PEQ that covers the whole frequency bands in tiny fractions so any PEQ can be selected. 2) pink noise when muting the DCX2496 to listen to each LCR should sound the same within a few dB. 3) with the microphones being close to the screen, each LCR can be sounding while looking at RTA the sound from each should sum up, the screen material will have an impact on the horn and the horns have to be placed at same distance from the screen otherwise the frequency will be, up or down in certain parts of the frequency. Once all the LCR horns have been PEQ tuned can move on to next step. 1) microphones placed at seating locations and with that the SPL dB frequency is going to alter its frequency shape. Some PEQ used again to get an elevated boast on the upper high frequencies above 8KHz to 20.000KHz thou only few will ever hear/notice 20KHz in a movie and very few movies have fundamental peaks up to 20kHz that I have ever noticed. ALIEN 3 (1992) Truman show (1998) Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). All the above can take days to achieve. If one of the many PEQ failed in the sound chain, make note of all the PEQ filters so a replacement can be installed. Flat frequency = good cos then the film mix will play with clearness of the dialogue, music. foley and effects. If a speaker is uneven with peak frequencies that can audio mask what your listening for will be very hard to hear?
