Theory: There Is No Definition of What a Chord Is!

There is no definition of a chord that is going to work every time. At the start of this video I said we have to have at least three pitches. But even that is not true. If you play an open 5th with just two pitches, that is called the day a power chord. Of course if you have only C and G, you can have as many C's and G's as you wish. But when considering chords we don't normally count octaves, which are called doublings. So I suppose you can say that only one pitch, even if it has octaves, it's not a chord.
But other than that, just about anything that makes you play several notes together at the same time will be considered a chord by someone.

This is a fascinating and thought-provoking video and perhaps timely.

Something I had to think about after making this video is that we can't even say for sure that only two pitches are not a chord. And that is because an open 5th, which is only two pitches, is referred to as a power chord. Most of the time that probably means more than two notes because things are doubled. But even so there are only two pitches. This is another reason to keep in mind that the definition of a chord is a very tricky matter.

When I think of a chord, I just think of 2 or more pitches played at the same time, but that's also tricky because if you have a single note and that same note an octave higher, it's arguable that it isn't a chord.

As you can see coming up with a simple definition is very elusive. When I made this video I said that a chord has to have at least three pitches. Then a half an hour later I thought about the so called power chord which has only two:)
