He just used the already established Empire, treasure filled by his father after conquering a lot of lands in a very short amount of time and the powerful organised and disciplined Janissary army. Suleiman as well Conqueror much lands and established many other things like the laws etc but the fact that Selim I just did a lot in 8 years by his own tactics only. Selim I was also a really good commander and used to command while in the battle but in case of Suleiman, this was usually done in initial battles by Ibrahim Pasha of Parga and later other Viziers. Selim I, even might had left the best heir for the Empire after his death but in case of Suleiman, he failed completely here and left the Selim II to get the throne and from there, it started the downfall of Empire :(
