Why Neutron Stars are Called Neutron Stars

Күн бұрынWhy are neutron stars called neutron stars? That is what we aim to answer in this video with some discussion of stellar evolution and some quick, dirty, back of the envelope physics.
The short answer to this question is the abundance of neutrons in the dense matter that makes up a neutron star.

it's simple, it's a dead star made up of mostly neutrons. it's basically like a giant atomic nucleus the size of a city.

Corrections : (For those watching post edits, these timestamps may not be relevant) ~4:40 - I say something along the lines that the process of nuclear fusion takes smaller atoms and creates larger atoms which makes the star more massive. This is clearly not the case. The star does not get more massive. It does however reduce the number of atoms available to go through the fusion process and thus creating less pressure that is counteracting gravity. That is why gravity eventually dominates.
