I made the first vehicle crossing of the Simpson Desert following Dr Cecil Madigan's camel route in a Suzuki LJ50 back in 1979. No tracks compass only a truly memorable 7 day crossing. Having now crossed the Simpson by vehicle well in excess of 70 times, walked it from west to east and also north to south without a backup vehicle, driven only by two feet and a heartbeat, and ridden across it by camel I sure do miss it all. At 89 my enjoyment of the outback now comes through videos such as yours. With great photography your journey was well presented and your love of adventure obvious. Thank you. DB

Congrats on conquering the mighty Simpson Guys. Its a bloody big country out there. In my day we delivered the accommodations and machinery to Plenty River mine at Jervois and man i can tell you the Plenty hwy used to be 200km of that very same stuff you found on the hay..2nd gear with the hand throttle set to 1200rpm for 10 or 12 hrs to get from the Alice Tennant road to the mine. It was kind of special to see you guys out there and it bought back some hard but awesome memories. I hope you guys take fond memories with you to pass on as well. Stay safe

I'm glad you won the fuel voucher guys, well deserved. Thanks Ange for all your running around getting those great shots. Chris, you're a trooper driving the Mog all day. Would be good to get Ange doing more of that driving so she gets more comfortable behind the wheel. Those corrugations looked like hell on earth. Take care. Marty from Perth

Loved the drone footage especially the early morning landscapes. That early light really brings out the colors and the contours of the dunes. That section between Batton Hill and Jervois Station was terrible in 2019 too - it had my Land Cruiser/Trayon rig dancing all over the place! Thanks for rewinding my memories of that trip.

Great trip to the top end. Loved watching the same vehicle I used to drive, live and work around in the same conditions in the top end. They will chew the juice a bit but if you keep the revs down by changing up a gear they will idle along nicely in the right gear. Corrigation is a bitch and the cabs get very hot in the top end. I used to pop the canopy hatch to allow airflow and used to pull an 8 tonne trailor with the mog and spent many hours with my foot on the hand throttle over taking road trains. Had a few blow outs on the trailor due to the heat and was scary pulling up a fully laden trailor pushing the mog around on the highway. Great trip loved watching.

Great viewing guys. Did the Hay River last year and can attest to that awful 76klm out (in our case ‘in’). We actually found the area very scenic between Dingo well and Batton Hill camp. Stopped a few times to walk the river bed with beautiful Ghost Gums on either bank. This year I reckon we were a week ahead of you on the Madigan. Shame I cannot get back to hunt the prize LOL.

The problem with some rough bits of track is the ripples are set in a spacing and frequency that causes a resonance that means your vehicle tacks up a swing or sway all of its own to match… can make you sea sick or if high enough frequency can cause mechanical damage.

Lucky buggers. I wanted to head home from Alice Springs to Brisbane via the HRT. Sadly, I did a tyre sidewall outside Birdsville and my other spare is much smaller than the tyres on the car..... its not the desert I'm worried about, it's the 200-odd kilometres from Birdsville to Windorah on the eastern side. We leave Alice Springs Tuesday 23 Aug. 7 days via Mt Isa.

Great content guys. Love it. Suggestion: that rocking side to side of your truck looks like you have to much weight up high in your camper. If you place everything heavy, down as low down to floor level as possible (or under floor in storage), and place as much weight as possible over/around the rear axle, it should make things less "car sick". I did this in a 4-tonne truck and it made a huge difference. Good luck.
@TheOutFit
@TheOutFit Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for your comment. We made sure there is no weight up high on our build thankfully, just the truck is very tall so some rocking going over alternating ruts offroad is inevitable. Cheers

Loved your drone footage over the Hay River. But I didn't see any footage from Mt Winnecke or Lake Caroline or Goyders Pillar - maybe you need to go back and see these places. I love it out there and did the same trip as you in reverse last month - the last 100ks into Jervois has always been rough but about the same as most of the Anne Beadell Highway, or the Canning or the Gunbarrel, so if you plan on doing these tracks, might be worth lowering your pressures a fair bit more to smooth the ride in the Mog.
