The Overlap

Күн бұрын

On this week’s episode on The Overlap, brought to you by SkyBet, we are joined by Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana.
As our first goalkeeper on the show we kick things off with a discussion on the evolution of the position along with the differences the Premier League has brought to the Cameroonian keeper.
Onana talks about his childhood, family and youth career that seen him reject a contract at Barcelona after coming through their youth system and the relationship he has United boss Erik ten Hag, who he played under at Ajax before a move to Inter Milan.
We also chat about the Andre Onana Foundation, a foundation that provides free medical care and surgeries to underprivileged communities helping individuals in need regain their health and hope.
Finally we preview this weekend’s FA Cup final between Manchester United v Manchester City and Onana has a special message for the Red Devils fans.

People seemed to be surprised by his strong mentality. He is an elite Africa player of course has a strong mentality in fact African people in general have a strong mentality because nothing comes easy to them. He's a nice guy. I could tell it was a difficult interview for Gary because Onana didn't give much away and his cultural differences made it hard. Understandably, he didn't understand the motives behind some questions, and he was a bit worried about saying the wrong thing. We can't be too hard on him, as it must be difficult adapting to different countries. He hasn't been here for long, and we have to remember, he has seen the brutal, unforgiving media in Italy whereas now he is seeing the critical media in the UK, which is amplified by the poor season.

Talking about the injuries, changing defense, pressure of the shirt, the amount of shots he had to face, Gary feeds him every chance to pass off some blame for the tough period and he absolutely refuses. Great stuff.

To observe that Onana is very intelligent with his comments is normal and alright, but to add that you never really expected it from him makes me ask why - why did you never expect it from him?

@mirandaal4541 tbh I don't know why I never really expected it from him🤣. But what I meant was the response he told Neveille that he said they should not criticise the young players but they should instead go for the senior players. That is elite intelligence right there, that statement made me go wow

Gotta say, I have called him out, blamed him, said he was poor etc and having watched this and listened to him and tried to understand his character, he appears to be a guy Utd need and speaks from the heart naturally. Definitely proved me wrong as to how I thought he may have been as a character in my mind. Gary has this natural ability to draw this out of the people he interviews which makes for interesting and compelling viewing. Class as alwasys.

I remember watching Peter, Edwin and David thinking “a dustbin could be in goal right now and we’d still keep a clean sheet” The number of shots this man has had to face and the % he has kept out cannot be ignored. With a good consistent back line this man is world class.

Fair points on David’s era - he was more inconsistent than Edwin and Peter. But my point is more about the defence being solid. For example Jose’s season where he finished second with 81 points. There were games where David may as well not have turned up. Erik’s tactics drive the opposite at the moment and that has to change.

I see him dominating more next season. Ten Hag is always right sticking by him. And I stick vy him 💯% too. Go on Onana. Your interview was a top notch. Your responses to Gary's was sincere and impeccable speech. Manchester United ❤️

I’ve been a big critic of Onana from the moment we signed him. I was bitter that we let DDG leave. So that was part of it. No one can live up to de gea he was world class. So it took some getting used to for all parties involved. I stand by the fact that this was a reason for our poor season. But I hope that next season will be better for him and the squad. And he spoke really well. He’s improved a lot as the seasons gone on. So hopefully he will have a strong season next year. Good luck.

De Gea's highest save percentage in the league during his last three seasons was 71,1%, and Onana ended this season with a save percentage of 74,9%, which is the highest in the league, as well as having made the most saves in the league. Sure, De Gea has had 80%+ seasons, but his average across all seasons at Manchester United is below what Onana got this season, so Onana is of to a good start. I'd say that Onana kept this season from being much worse, as opposed to having been the reason it was bad.

20 shots as every Premier League team know that Bonana has a high propensity to drop Clangers every now and then and seems to be always 2-3 seconds slower in reaction, every team manager would be asking their team to have a pop at goal as Bonana has been encouragement for any team as the 12th man 😂 that’s what our coach used to tell us when we face similar goalkeeper 😅
