Is there a crisis in Cosmology?
Find out this and more on this week's episode of The Pakistan Experience.
Salman Hameed is the founder and CEO of the non-profit Kainaat Studios, that creates topical astronomy videos in Urdu for audiences in Pakistan (and broader South Asia). He is also Charles Taylor Chair and Professor of Integrated Science & Humanities at Hampshire College, Amherst, Massachusetts. He holds a Ph.D. in astronomy and is a member of the Five College Astronomy Department (FCAD), but his research is inter-disciplinary and it focuses on analyzing how science interacts with society. Science communication is still his primary focus. Salman has a KZfaq Channel (Kainaat Astronomy) for Urdu videos and a weekly astronomy segment in English for a New England Public Radio (NEPM) in Massachusetts. Through Kainaat Studios, he also produces astronomy content in Urdu specially aimed at kids in Pakistan. His writings have appeared in Dawn Magazine, Express Tribune, Science Magazine, and the Guardian.
The Pakistan Experience is an independently produced podcast looking to tell stories about Pakistan through conversations.

This is a very knee jerk reaction comment....there is a long way of economic satiety + general per unit quality of life ( indexes like per unit GDP/ happiness of life index...combination of both )before a community prefers the logical / rational / way of life...........in south/ south east asia....we lack common sense....one young mind can't understand applicative physics in its essenc as this guy was describing if he / she is parallely being instructed of 2-3 books who all claims that they are the absolute end point of everything...

India's is one of the start-ups. Agnikul has successfully built 3D printed semi cryogenic rocket and sent it in the space through their own private launch pad. I needed to mention it just to counter what your learned guest has said about Indian start-up that they are not doing any "Glamorous" work. Just do some research on what Indian space start-ups are up to.

The Indian Space Research Organization (IRSO) mission not only made history because it saw the nation become the fourth to successfully land on the moon - after the Soviet Union, the U.S. and China - but also because it named India the first to land at the southern lunar pole.

How come Pakistanis tend to own Arab scientific achievements by labelling them as "muslim" while it had nothing to do with South Asia or its later muslim converts? No disrespect meant but just curious! On the whole the content of this episode was one of the best I have seen on this channel. Salman Hameed seems to be masterful in explaining complex science in layman terms. Sir you say China has no failures? Do you think a country which is as opaque as china will allow any news of failure to reach the outside world? How do you know if they didn't try & fail previously? Even a country lightning years more advanced than china (despite what you say) as America is had many failures before success - exactly why you can never trust Chinese since image is too important than transparency for CCP!

It's important to recognize the contributions of all communities in any nation's history. Interestingly, in India, Muslims have made remarkable contributions across various fields. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, often called the "Missile Man of India" and revered as the "People's President". Dr. Kalam played a pivotal role in India's space and missile programs, contributing significantly to the development of ballistic missile technology and space exploration. His work in the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has been instrumental in advancing India's capabilities. The contributions of Muslims in Bollywood, music, have enriched Indian culture, figures like AR Rahman, a world-renowned composer. Azim Premji, founder of Wipro, is one of India’s leading businessmen and philanthropists, contributing enormously to the tech industry and charitable causes.

Karachi, like any other metropolitan city, has immense potential for progress and modern living with all the urban facilities. However, over the past few decades, living conditions have deteriorated significantly, leading to a sense of hopelessness among its people. Despite this, every election brings renewed hope for a leader who can revive the old culture and glory of Karachi, and transform it into a thriving city that offers a high quality of life for its residents.

I've got a question related to aliens. Even if there's an Alien pointing it's telescope right towards earth and observing it but is millions of light years away, wouldn't it just see dinosaurs. Similar to that even if we point our telescope right towards the same Alien planet we would experience something similar.
@sibgharehman6291

true however, if the aliens have reached type 4 civilization then hypothetically speaking they can just create a wormhole near our galaxy and observe from there. I mean it's Murphy's law right, whatever can happen will happen.

Contribution of Aryabhata Historical Context: Aryabhata was an ancient Indian mathematician and astronomer who lived in the 5th century CE, much earlier than Copernicus. Astronomical Insights: Aryabhata made several significant contributions to mathematics and astronomy, including calculations of the Earth's circumference and the length of the solar year. Heliocentric Model: Aryabhata did not propose a heliocentric model. However, he made important observations that suggested a more dynamic and complex understanding of celestial movements than was common at the time. Rotational Motion: Aryabhata correctly asserted that the apparent westward motion of the stars was due to the Earth's rotation on its axis. Geocentric to Heliocentric: While Aryabhata did not explicitly state that the Earth revolves around the Sun, his work laid some groundwork for questioning the purely geocentric models of his time. Summary While Aryabhata made crucial contributions to astronomy and had insights that were advanced for his time, the credit for the first comprehensive heliocentric model goes to Nicolaus Copernicus. Aryabhata's work, however, reflects the sophisticated level of astronomical knowledge in ancient India and contributed to a broader understanding of celestial mechanics that preceded and, in some ways, set the stage for later developments in astronomy. India built SAARC satellite and told all the countries that you can use this for free but just need to build a facility in their country. Guess which country said no. I can assume Pakistani government might be interested in this but I am sure their army would never accept something like that.

Even after such an unbiased discussion we are seeing an extrem divide in the comments. Ik taraf sab log "koi toh hy jo nizam e hasti chala raha hy" kr rahy hain. Dosri taraf sab log salman bhai ko bol rahy hain k religion hi sab ghalat hy or un ki puri history wali discussion ko koi mo nahi lag raha. We all are same, "extremists".

Now some people will come and say , no Quran never said that earth is flat or sun revolves around earth . I mean these people have never read those books written by Islamic scholars who explained in minutes details how earth is flat and how sun revolves around earth . But now that it’s crystal clear that none of those things were right now they say that oh that was wrong translation and Quran never said it 😂😂😂. (Same can be said for other religious texts as well not blaming Quran only like there are many Hindus too who believe a lot of stupid shit )

Pakistan's identity crisis on display here. I'm surprised you guys spent so much time discussing Arab-Islamic contributions to cosmic science, and hoping to find a connect there. What do you have in common with the Arabs? Civilizationally, your roots are Indian, and there is no shortage of achievements for you to celebrate, if you just acknowledge where you came from.

It's seriously sad to hear such an educated host say that things in water look bent. It's 8th grade science. Things in water look bent only if you look at them from air with an angle. If you look at them diving into the water they'll look normal. It's a refraction of light going from one medium to another. Nothing to do with eyes.

"...algorithm is based on arabic.." 😂😂😂😂 you mean from persian scientist Al Khwarizmi's book 'Kitab al-hisab al-hindi' ? The author of the book himself admits in the title, where the knowledge came from...he just translated that info into persian, which was then translated up by European into latin...
@ThePakistanExperience
@ThePakistanExperience 12 күн бұрын
The term algorithm derives from the name of Muhammad ibn Mūsā al'Khwārizmī, a ninth-century Persian mathematician. His latinized name, Algoritmi, meant “the decimal number system” and was used in this meaning for centuries.
@hkpandey1
@hkpandey1 12 күн бұрын
@@ThePakistanExperienceeven the 'decimal number system', after which Algorithmi was named is called the 'Hindu-Arabic numeral system' or the 'Indo-Arabic numeral system' and was invented by Indian mathematicians between the 0-3 AD... this number system was later adopted by Arabic mathematicians in 9th century AD, mostly popularised by persian mathematician Al Khwarizmi (On the Calculation with Hindu Numerals, c. 825) and arab mathematician Al Kindi (On the Use of the Hindu Numerals, c. 830) in their books which were then translated into Latin by European translators... Just fyi as to where all this knowledge originated....
