Conure behaviours and their meanings / what they mean!
I wanted to make an easy reference guide to many of the common behaviours that conures show and what they generally mean. Please keep in mind, some behaviours can mean multiple things, as with all parrots, so use this as a reference guide only. Every conure is an individual.
I haven't included stuff like scratching, eating, sleeping etc as these are pretty obvious behaviours!
I also tried to include lots of clips of varying lengths to keep it interesting, and just so you can see how beautiful our conures are!
You may notice that many of the sounds conures make are missing. This is because I wanted to focus this video on behaviour, and do a separate one for sounds and their meanings!
Also as I stated in the video, is your conure is showing signs of odd behaviour and you are concerned, check with a vet, it's better to be safe than sorry!

Great video. I find conures can go from playing to aggressive fast. As soon as mine starts bobbing I stop playing, or I could get bit. There is still lots to learn, but I really love my little guy, Sammie.

Thank you, I also love your icon! They can do yes, especially males. It's all about keeping the play as calm as possible and training. They get overstimulated quickly, so trying to keep an eye on that helps lots. It's great you watch Sammie's body language!

I have a small issue with my bird He often begs for scritches and will even start cuddling into my hand But the moment I pull away he gets angry and attacks me, and will even go so far as to chase my hand down so he can attack it more Then once he is satisfied he goes back to his perch and tucks his little foot How do I get him to stop? I’ve been giving him seeds every time he doesn’t attack me, and I’ve realized I should award him for more of the things he does. Also I really want to start training him, I haven’t been doing it so far but I’ve realized that life might be boring for him but idk how to start. Can anyone give me some tips and maybe some items I could use for training? Thanks in advance 😊

The only uncaptured behaviour; various wiggles, wings lifts and backsteps to be warned about during the 1.37s before a poop.

Thank you for this video, it's very helpful. My green cheeked conure is always cuddling with me and then (for me) gets very aggresive out of nowere, but now I see almost all the hormonal behaviour she does back in this video so I now know what to look out for.

Thank you! That was super helpful! I’m a new GCC owner. I find their behavior can be loving and challenging! They are less predictable than other parrots but also super smart. Mine is responding well to training.

My green cheek conure likes to ride on the handle of the vacuum when i am vacuuming, sounds strange just like your jenday staying on your shoulder while vacuuming, but it's true, I've heard most parrots are frightened of the vacuum, well , not yours or mine! Lol🤣👍♥️

I think they enjoy them, but it overstimulates them, especially males! It's also good for exercising their leg muscles as they charge around! It's one of those toys I'd give them for a little while of supervised play rather than something on a play stand or in a cage. (This is just my opinion though as I know some people love them on stands!)

Lovely video! I recently got a green cheek conure named cosmo and I've noticed a behavior I've never seen before. Cosmo will quickly point her nose up, kinda like looking up but very quickly, It's hard to describe but I was wondering if you have ever seen this before. Thank you so much!

Why are they so temperamental compared to other parrots? Like budgies, ringnecks and cockatoo?

Hey there, I wouldn't say they are more or less temperamental than other parrots. They do tend to nip/bite more but each parrot is an individual and every species has it's own quirks! For example ring necks as a rule tend to like being cuddled less, but conures do! Cockatoos can be totally crazy in behaviour but also like being fussed over! Cockatiel's generally like being noisy, but some aren't! Conures can be very bitey but also massively affectionate!

I just brought home a 10 week old conure two days ago and appreciate the helpful video. I have been trying to find some information about different stages of life in conures and their behaviors. (Ex. Baby, adolescent, adult behavior changes) I heard conures can be more nippy at a certain age or phase of their life.

Hey Ash, No problems! Yes, they certainly can be. They are usually very explorative with their beaks when little. Then they get into the "terrible 2's" where many tend to bite loads. It settles as they get older. However most parrots are more likely to bite when hormonal (which can be seasonal depending on how you manage it) I've got a few other videos on conures and hormones/biting!

@@TheParrotTeacher Thanks for responding, I have been looking up videos and articles online because I want to be as prepared as possible lol. I have heard a lot of people re-home hormonal birds instead of just working through it which is sad. I find most problems people have with pets is not doing their research or wanting the perfect pet without putting in the work. Its like people who get puppies and complain about them peeing and chewing.

My conure are scared even though i bought them as baby’s its so weird but the testing bite keeps happening like when i put my hand while he is biting he doesn’t do anything

It's down to their individual personalities and sometimes experiences really! Ours always test bite apart from Pickles who is just so relaxed its awesome! Olive's test bites tend to be more like "I just love biting" lol

I tragically lost my Green Cheeked Conure, when I took him upto the roof to bask in the sunshine and agitated him to sit on a tree branch, upon seeing another crow there, he took to flight and I have not found him since. Been searching for past 2 days.

The only catch being, the Conure was ringed by another and when I first took him to open skies on the roof, he flew after being cared for by me for about 2 weeks. Is the technique to tie a string on their feet or ring acceptable ? Instead of a harness.

I’m sorry to hear that, bird tricks have a good video on finding lost birds. I’m not a fan of strings. You’d be better if harness training or having them in a carrier. You could do free flight training also but there will always be that risk!

I have recently added a green check conure to my family and we are just getting to know each other. She rolled over in anticipation for treats and then after she was on her perch and was sort of crouched and fluttered her wings and was chirping. Any idea if that is a good sign or more of a territorial thing? We haven’t even gotten to stepping up on my hand yet, just trying to spend time and give treats through the cage for a bit to get to know each other.

Hey Teasia, It would depend on context. Sometimes the crouched fluttering wings thing can mean anxiousness or excitement. In other contexts it may mean "randy" if you get my meaning. I actually have a video about that topic! I think it’s should you let your bird sit on your head (tough to check on mobile!) Normally it just means she feels safer and more comfortable up there! It’s a high up spot, warm and safe!

My Pineapple Conure is making a strange sound similar to a squirrel when I train him to dance and give his seed after he has danced 3 to 4 times. Its also similar to newborn chicken. What does the sound mean?

I adopted a conure couple and I ready had one at home. Mine is so like me he is chill and somewhet quiet. The two new ones how ever are as wild as can be, acting like its the end of the world, teritorial over everything and i got bit hard for touch the cage at some point. I dont know where to begin training them or even getting them less violent, can you please advice?

Hey Esra, It can be tough to deal with that kind of thing, especially initially! The usual advise is to try to give them time and also work on whatever training you can. Be that passive bonding, targeting through the bars etc

Jutting head up into the air really quickly every second or two? Seems to do it when hes excited and introduce a new ball to him or something.... but he does this around a budgie and wasnt sure if its actually a territorial thing?

Hey Church! Almost like a nodding or bobbing motion? If so it is most likely to be excitement, territorial or "posturing" especially if he does any marching after!

Hey Leyla, Thank you! Dark feathers can be down to a few things. The most common reason is feather bronzing which happens when feathers get stained with grease from us, oils or other substances. It isn’t a big issue and moults out. If the majority of feathers are discoloured it’s worth keeping an eye on.

I have a Green cheecked Conure named Peatree. I've never seen her do "Posturing and dancing" is there a reason for that?

Hey there, There could be lots of reasons why. It could be Peatree as an individual doesn't like doing so (every conure is pretty unique). It could be she is a he. It could be she just doesn't get very excited or hormonal often or shows it in a different way!

Wing stretching is usually followed by pooping if they are about to fly. Ask me how I know.

Hey Slabothy! Scampi is the worst for it. He gets massively over stimulated. Pickles and Olive tend to just enjoy chasing them and pushing them around, although occasionally if it rolls on them they get cross lol! It may be because he's male and they are females!

Yes my female does! She doesn’t seem like she’s actually ‘playing’ with the bell on her boing perch, more ‘attacking’ it but she seems to enjoy some rough playing so hoping it’s ok to allow it - we always laugh at her so thought maybe it’s her playing up to it.

@@ktpuss It's possible that the greater excitement in the room is spurring her on to do it more! They are very reactive to sound! I'm personally not a big fan of bells. In a ball is fine as its not reflective and there's no danger. But generally I see them as pointless and potentially dangerous! HOWEVER unless its a coloured bell I never preach at anyone to remove them unless their parrot is hormonal!

Hey there, They usually tuck them up when they are resting and relaxing! Rarely they can pop them up because they are cold or they are hurt/feel a little unwell.

I got my green cheek about 2 months ago and even though I’m a lot better at reading his body language, he’s still very unpredictable and can be playing one second then trying to and actually biting me😭I love him but sometimes he’s like a dictator

Hello, just got my first conure 5 days ago. Already in love💚. She is 4 months old. My question is when do introduce fruits n veggies in their diet. Right now she is having milk 3 times a day plus millet/ nuts etc. and when and how do I get her to shower/ wash herself. Thank you for your wonderful videos❤️

A conures diet should be primarily vegetables (60-70 percent) with the rest made up of seed, a little fruit, herbs, sprouted seeds, pellets etc etc I’m not sure if there’s a lost in translation but if she is having dairy milk I’d stop that immediately as lactose is no good for parrots! Millet is also cool as a training food but doesn’t have much nutrition in it! Regarding bathing, you could provide her a shallow dish to wash in and see if she wants to! You could also run the tap at a low stream and see if she wants to splash under it!

I’m about 3 days in to having my 5 month old conure. My conure isn’t loud when chirping but climbs on cage trying to get my attention. It’s very scared of my hands but has started to trust me with putting in food. Today when I had the cage open it got out and flew all over the house and I put it back in the cage but I’m wondering when is a good time to try and bond with it and how to do so?

I have had my yellow sided green cheek for almost two years now. She recently just started a new behavior that I'm not sure what she is trying to tell me. The rubbing could be asking for something or letting you know he wants to play or be petted etc. The biting isn’t uncommon with conures! I’d look at why he isn’t stepping up? Is it treat motivation, is it he doesn’t want to? Is it how your presenting your fingers or asking? I have other videos on conures that may help!

Hey there, It should be discouraged as it can lead to hormonal behaviour. This can cause infertile egg laying, aggression, territorial behaviour and food guarding! The best ways are holistically! Through the right diet, providing plenty of sleep, ensuring there are no nest spots, giving enough activities etc etc My partner Sophie has a video about hormones on her channel!

Hey Elefteria, I'm not sure I can really recommend a parrot! It depends on so many factors. A brief summary of their personalities though: Quakers can be exceptionally noisy (more so than conures), but also very engaging and big talkers. They aren't as big into cuddles as conures and bite just as frequently. Conures are noisy, depending on which sub type very noisy and don't talk much. They are more into cuddles but tend to nip and bite. Both quakers and conures are as into tricks/learning as each other. Either can potentially be family friendly but that would take interactions with your little ones, training and respect of boundaries. Both are also likely to bond to one person or a group, it really depends on the individual.

Someone gave up their conure to me and I’m just worried cause he screams a lot and will go away in his little box making sad noises then starts hitting the box wall. What type of box is it? If it’s a nesting box I recommend taking it away it was cause them to get hormonal and encourage nesting behavior which can make them sexually frustrated (aggressive)

4:22 I finally found an exact representation of what my conure does when I preen him! He will cuddle into my hand and occasionally flick his wing(s) extremely fast and then relax, and almost purr if that makes sense? It’s incredibly cute, but I’ve heard that the flicking/flipping of the wings can be a hormonal/negative behavior, which has me very worried. I only offer scritches from the neck up, and I am careful to not stroke him absolutely anywhere else. So, is that little wing flick significant as far as him seeing our relationship as anything more than platonic? 😅 I’d love some insight! Thank you for the video.

Hey Abril, So wing flicking if it's just once or twice is fine (I have an example in my happy conure videos). They usually do it to settle in and cuddle. But, if they are doing it repeatedly, head bobbing, thrusting their behinds in the air or squealing while doing it then it's likely a hormonal behaviour. I wouldn't necessarily call hormonal behaviour negative, it's just hormonal! There are things you can do to manage it too in the diet, sleep routine, training etc (I have videos on hormones too!)

heya love i love this video ! its great, i adopted a conure 5 days ago and his already bonded with me his tame and sometimes loves being petted. However he is showing a-lot of signs of being hormonal, e.g Beak rubbing, regurdrating especially trying to in my mouth, cuddling a-lot ( i know conures are usually really cuddly ) but i feel like this is causing him to be hormonal. I have 2 conures and 1 Quaker and they'll perch on my shoulders better and there but then 1 of the conures starts biting at my face, not fully open beak but enough to cut (small but painful pinching) and if I protest or try moving him both the other 2 start screeching and trying to bite me in retaliation.

Hey Jasmine, It sounds like they are all jealous of you, or each other or consider your shoulders their territory. Do they ever fight each other? It's a tough situation to deal with, especially with biting involved. Conures are notorious for nipping and pinching too!

@@TheParrotTeacher Every so often they'll fight in the cage but the Quaker usually screeches at them and they'll stop. I'm not sure what they're behavior has been like as I got them from a coworker maybe a month ago and she said they're really close to each other and shouldn't be separated. Basically I thought it was curiosity at first as I read they explore with their beaks but they move from shoulder to shoulder across my chest and will perch on either or on my head then 1 randomly starts biting me those pinch bites so I've tried covering my neck but he'll search for any part exposed to bite and the other comes charging at me if I verbally protest. The Quaker usually steps in to defend them if I reach up to try and move the biter or redirect him elsewhere and they all start squawking and trying to bite

@@lachikisgurl the biting is usually “testing” or affection or attention seeking. Our male conure does the same with our necks and we redirect or remove him to somewhere neutral, so I totally sympathise! It’s a tough one in your case as the other two react so much to it. So solution wise, there are a few things you can try. Target training will help to target him or them away! Keeping them off your shoulder, maybe creating a neutral play stand for them to go to. More step up training and consistent training to try and get them to respond more positively. Finding something more reinforcing than your shoulder/ treats! My Mia bathes in her water bowl regularly and sometimes I put her under the faucet water, she seems to like it sometimes but I'm not sure other times. Should I continue and is her own water bowl bathing enough to keep her clean? I really loved this video.

Hey Jacqueline! Conure's all seem to do that! All of ours love bathing in their water bowls lol! If you do pop her under the faucet it's fine, but make sure the stream is really thin as it can be harmful to them. We usually run the water very lightly, then cup our hands and let them bathe in them. You can also use a bowl or plate! You can also use a mister and lightly spray her! Some parrots like that. I have some other conure related videos that may be useful! The one on moulting has tips for bathing parrots!

My conure is 4 months old and he does this cute thing where when he sees me he crouch his tummy downward, open is tail up as if angry and walks in zig-zags. Then he just snuggle up against me. (Arm, face, hair... Whatever fits his mood). I've been researching what this means but alas, I found nothing.

Hey Jeannie, It could be your scritching itchy pin feathers, you aren't doing it how he wants it, or he's just getting tired of it and wants a pause. Olive one of our rescue conures is similar sometimes. She wants pets but gets tired of it after a while. I usually watch for subtle signs that she wants a break then resume. I think it's worse with males as they tend to nip quicker/more during petting! Have you watched my videos on why conures bite/how to pet and cuddle your bird? they may help!

What does it mean when you hear a conure grinding his beak very loudly like he’s trying to crack a seed but his beak is empty. Ours is new and after things going well, the weekend had too many people and he ended up attacking someone he landed on. They were trying to walk him to his cage (no hands) and now he needs to be in his cage. I feel bad for him but until he settles down, it’s best for him to be there. But after a few loud cries from him (“I can’t see you” type) I will hear him crack his beak a few times. ???

Hey there, Normally beak grinding means one thing which is settling down to relax. Sometimes they can do it loudly when grinding food, but as you mentioned his beak is empty. If he has just come into your home he is going to be nervous and anxious. Having him out with lots of people (especially one's he's not seen before) is kinda asking for biting! I'd work on bonding, training like target training and building his trust! Also ensuring he only comes out with people he knows until he is used to more. You don't want to teach him that being in his cage is where he goes when he bites/that he is stuck in there lots now! I have lots of conure videos if you'd like to learn more!

The people he’s not familiar with, I get them (with him in his cage) they offer him tiny treats of millet so hopefully he starts associating them with nice things. I have had birds most of my life, just not a conure. He it hand tame and all but yes, he is going through an adjustment period.

@@TheParrotTeacher positive reinforcement indeed! After he low key mauled my brothers neck after the bird landed on him. Brother was trying to walk him to his cage and sunny just started biting repeatedly. 😢 understandably by bro was miffed but I think he was walking too fast and made the bird panic. Either way, we are all trying to take things slowly. Only other issue we are having (not a huge one) is he cries really loud in his cage. There are people around (we made sure he’s in a moderate traffic area so he can watch people but he is use to being a house roaming bird. Any suggestions for the crying? 🐦 it’s the loud, single note “i can’t see you” type call. I did look up several videos on conure calls and their meanings.

@@diaryofagoat-lass1023 one of our rescues made a similar noise! It’s mostly attention seeking or mild distress related. Solutions wise would be time, giving attention at random intervals (so they don’t feel like they are ignored or have to wait ages for it) and training!

Hey Sandra, I have a video specifically about the topic that may help! But in terms of quick solutions, discouraging it through management of hormones, trying to avoid areas that encourage it (for example fabrics, toys, nest like places depending on your parrot). A little is not necessarily an issue if its between two parrots and doesn't lead to mating behaviour. This is because it can be part of parrot bonding. It's only if it's repeated and often.

How do you discourage the hormonal/territorial behavior? I’ve had a male green cheek conure for 2.5 years & he’s always been timid & gentle. We actually have 2 males caged together at night & free flighted during the day. I had a baby 7 months ago & obviously my attention is now on my baby 24/7 & while both conures have become extremely attention seeking & noisy, our timid male has become so territorial that he now attacks me when I change their food in the cage. He’s always been very shy so this is shocking behavior for him. I’m at a loss on how to discourage it. I’ve tried giving them more attention when my baby is in my husband’s care after work or when my in-laws can watch him, but he just gets even more territorial & aggressive when I show him any sort of attention at all. He now dominates our other male, who appears fearful of his displays, & neither of them will accept treats from me when they’re in the cage…I’m hoping as my son grows & becomes more independent, the conures will relax a bit as I’ll be able to pay them more attention.

Hey there, I actually have a video on the topic of hormones that may be worth you watching as it talks about many of the common signs and solutions. It can be difficult, especially in the situation you're in with a new baby in the house. Also their age is a common trouble spot for many adolescent parrots known as the terrible 2's. Quick fire: I'd work on identifying what exactly is causing the behaviour and making sure it is actually hormones and not behavioural (such as changes in environment, wanting attention etc) I'd ensure their diet and cage set up is conducive to preventing hormones and then if possible training where you can! Honestly, aside from individual variances they don’t have bigger or smaller eyes! They are basically the same species!

Hey Sai, It's a video idea I have been thinking of doing for ages! However I'd look into why they are screaming? Are they bored? Do they want attention? Is it excess energy due to diet/lack of exercise? Is it fear? Is it hormones? Are other sounds setting them off? There are lots of potential reasons why a parrot screams, it's about working out why and problem solving it! I have some other videos that may be worth watching like my one on hormones!

@@TheParrotTeacher thanks for the response but it seems like attention when they r in cage but when I open cage they come out and roam but when I put my hand near them they r running away

@@saisundeep5552 Hey Sai, It might be worth working on your basic bonding with them. I have several videos on bonding that may help! If you can provide more fun things in and around the cage too such as foraging trays/toys!

Hey there, The Strings are most likely "pin feathers" new feather shafts growing in after moulting! I have a video on " How to help your parrot with moulting" that might be worth watching!
