Lame and dumb. Might as well let the computer decide if the field goal will be kicked good and take the field goal out. Might as well take out every ref ever and have it all reviewed by people watching fixed cameras operated by people in the stands with no field view. Or maybe the guys holding the camera rigs will be like representative of the refs upstairs cause you don’t want them in the way. No no no. God forbid you train your refs better.
@royalpalm_941

@@RichardPhist1terrible analogy. Electronic spotting isn’t “deciding” anything. It’s just making sure things are accurate. Refs should have as little impact on the game as possible so if a person behind a screen becomes the future of referees, if it’s resulting in better calls, who cares. Refs still need to be on the field to spot the ball/separate piles, manage players, etc.

@@FrakintheboX That's because you're assuming that the location the pole was set at was in fact the EXACT spot where the runner stopped, even though the runner has 8 guys on top of him!!! Therein lies the problem! For example, assume it's 3rd & 1 and the offense goes for a rushing play...and the QB hands off to the running back, who after crossing the LOS, is immediately bombarded by 5 defenders, no one can see exactly where the true spot of the ball should be simply because by the time you pull everyone off the running back, he may have moved one way or another that will affect the call and thus, affect the game!

This is a classic solution to a problem that doesn't exist. There is NO REASON to get rid of the chain gang. It is consistent and fast. Just think of how buggy the new system will be.Have you seen soccer VAR? It is quite often blatantly wrong with offsides calls (they freeze the frame when they want, sometimes the ball is still being struck and sometimes after the ball is struck). That is what we have to look forward to. And chipping an oblong ball isn't really feasible, either. The orientation of the ball will matter...and it will end up being LESS accurate than replay and the chain gang.
@troybaxter
@troybaxter 18 күн бұрын
And chipping the ball doesn't solve the inherent issue of what constitutes the ball stopping. It isn't the ball's momentum, but the location of a second body (the player). And the player is going to be the absolute hardest to determine if they are down or not, because it's not just single points, but various parts of your body.

And even then, when you have a mass of bodies around a player, it can be impossible to tell when they hit the ground. That isn't the case with football because it is far more dynamic.

It's not the simple. You have to consider the state of the player and whether they are down or not. Yeah, we can see if the ball crosses the goalline, but the question is whether or not the player's body was on the ground before the ball crossed or if the ball gets jarred loose. It's just not as simple as y'all make it out to be, and parse through the noise to find the accurate and reliable data is sometimes outright impossible.

They've been placing sensors into everything for years now, they can track all the players and the ball on the field and do so for TV and the stats. This is going to work just fine, it's probably just a bit more advanced than the tv first down markers they track right now for the TV broadcasting.

NFL just adding to the list to control the outcome of the games. What the sports media ignored was that the call was wrong. All they could talk about was Biggest Gene Salvatore and the card.... Gene made it about himself. When you can slide a card between the ball and stick.... there's obviously a small gap.... that's not a first down. Sheesh!

This is a horrible idea. They always say the lines they put on the field is not accurate. So we are going to switch to a system that's totally reliant on it. The chain gang is the most accurate way to measure first downs. Stop ruining the game.
@RyTrapp0
@RyTrapp0 23 күн бұрын
They say that because it's the *TV people* putting the line on the field, not the league. Because it's a TV feature, not actually apart of the game, they aren't apart of the officials. As if a guy holding a stick "about" where a ref said the ball should be was ever accurate...

@cf2851

So the guy holding the first stick jogs off the sideline, 30 yards out onto the field, watching out for players and officials, keeping an eye on the chain and his stick partner... then puts it down on the field where he thinks he was on the sideline. I think the sensors can probably achieve that accuracy. 😁
@matthewjosephthecommonsens2940
@matthewjosephthecommonsens2940 23 күн бұрын
@cf2851 yeah that's not how chain gang works. There is a marker that clips to the links of the chain that delineated the LOS and thats where the down marker goes. The 2 side judges then keep track of thr original LOS and the current LOS so if the chains go down they can line the chains up exactly the way they were before. The chain gang system is so incredible accurate at spotting the ball it's almost unbelievable.

I don't know anybody in my entire lifetime who has ever complained about chaingangs. Roughing calls if you look at a QB wrong.... not being allowed to tackle anymore because that's a personal foul.....throwing BS flags or missing clear penalties..... a team getting ref favoratism in a playoff game...... But never, "those damn chaingangs are ruining the sport of football!!" Hell, I think jumping in the air has caused more damage to the game, with how players have been hit and come down wrong on a leg & snapped a leg/ankle/knee....
