If NFL players are willing to sign a waiver that they can never sue the NFL or any of it's teams/owners/coaches in the future because of end of career injuries, then they can go back to the old rules. The NFL does not want to put itself in another predicament involving injuries that some players might claim were avoidable with these rules.

The origins of football are kinda fucked up. College upperclassmen smashing up freshmen. Smthg like that. Football was almost banned outright because of so many deaths yearly. They really need to get rid of it. I can only name three players in the history of the sport that made them exciting (Hester, Cribbs, Patterson) and that's just not enough to keep them around. Even the rare kick return TD kinda sucks, they usually make one minor cut and just run through a gap. The only more boring TD in the game is the blown coverage go-route. Onside kicks are weird and suck too. Do the 4th and 15 from the 30 rule.

I'm willing to bet there's lawyers out there who can make a wrongful termination suit out of this, or some legal loophole to show them that this won't stand. Not really arrogant when you have the stats to back it up. Especially when there are rules that get created to prevent other players from doing the things that you have done. The kickoff where you recovered your own onside kick is quite possibly the greatest special-teams moment I have ever watched.
@zimmermanj4
@zimmermanj4 Жыл бұрын
They have the stats because they changed the kickoffs rules several years ago increasing the amount of balls not kicked into the end zone because teams didn’t want to give up the 25-yard line for free. If they really wanted to reduce the number of returns they would revert back to the 20-yard line for touchbacks.

Football and player-safety is an oxymoron. With everything that's been uncovered about the dangers of the game, the players remain passionate and very well know what they're signing up for. While there have been reasonable alterations made to try and prolong personnel health, the beauty in football is the cohesive high-risk/high-reward nature of it. The league has to face facts and understand that car accidents are going to happen, and the game will never be a pillow soft utopia that pleases their targeted demographic of coastal wine moms..

Cant wait for the NFL in 2050 where the opening kickoff is just a kicker solo on the field kicking a ball off a tee on their own 20 yard line to NOBODY and the opponent either chooses to take the ball where it landed or start at the 25. I'm sure by then the game will be also altered to be 5 on 5 with no blitzing and the QBs must be wrapped in bubble tape for every offensive snap.

I'm sure the owners would happily eliminate kickoffs, have every play involve a qb, and pay the qb rhe special teams money.

Most NFL kickoffs are touchbacks nowadays, in the XFL the kickoffs get returned
@MarioHuizar10

@@GTAIVman this is why I don’t care too much about the rule change, the majority of kick offs are touchbacks already and will continue to go in that direction with these new kickers and their massive legs. Teams don’t want teams returning kicks and risking getting good starting field. Punts should be left as is, but kickoffs are boring already so I don’t mind just starting at the 25 and getting the ball rolling, also for an onside kick I prefer a 4th and 15 or something like that.

For all the safety precautions- according to Tone, concussions still went up 15% last season (thanks Tua/Dolphins O-line) in a QB /offense-driven league 🙄

i could see a compromise where if the fair catch is inside the 5 yard line then it can count as a touchback. that way if you want to try pinning them there is still a buffer zone

All NFL teams (coaches and players) should all agree to return every kick this year. No fair catches on punts unless it’s already at the 25 or more.

Another stat to consider is how serious everyone has started to take concussions. Concussions went previously under reported so naturally they have 15% more now.

They'll never fully remove the kick offs because it allows 10 minutes of commercial time. One of the most annoying things about college football tbh. End of a drive, 5 min commercial break, come back for a quick touchback kick off, 5 minute commercial break

May not be a popular opinion but I used to play on kickoffs and I had my bell rung quite a few times. Running full speed down the field into a wedge was a car wreck. I don't mind the xfl idea tbh. Side note switch to grass fields jesus
