Typically pharaohs would erect statues in a more flattering light, symmetrical and visually free of spots and blemishes. Whereas Akhenatens statues are pot-bellied and lack symmetry. I doubt the documentary maker thought he was white or should be portrayed as such.

You can claim them as Africans. But do not claim them as Black, as they weren't Black civillization. I do claim Cleopatra the Great and Alexander the Great as part of European history, as they were Europeans - but I do not claim them part of Polish history and history of Slavic people, as they were neither. Egyptians were part of African continent. Do they looked like Africans from sub Saharan area? No.
