Henry V demonstrates the effectiveness of education, focus, and wisdom. Additionally, the part fortune plays upon the outcome of war. Equally, how blind ambition, treachery, and disloyalty will rapidly undo what's been achieved. Such as it ever was, and still is.

I don't know why i am so fasinated by the English Kings and Queens, Henry the V is my favorite. Really makes me wish I could go back in time.

As a Yank I'm not sure of the proforance of all English Kings. But Henry the 5th has my vote. His advanced planning in regards to making stockpiles of the long bow was a genius move. Spikes in the field is another. His use of yoemen, as opposed to the French who preferred to have the knights take the lead , shows the English regard for the capability for its people. Also the arrows rained down on the French myst have caused a lots of armored knights to be thrown. The mud was a bonus. But the victory wasn't due the a Frence's enferior leadership is was due to the English superiority.

As a lover of European history this series is a revelation. I’ve gained a lot more detailed information on the various people who were central to events over many centuries. This for me is what the internet is all about, knowledge presented intelligently on whatever subject is of your particular interest, not some shallow meaningless so-called celebrity influencer.

Man, WHERE does this channel get its documentaries from?! The QUALITY! This channel should literally be required watching for anyone studying history and especially for anyone NOT studying history!

I became attached to the history of Henry V through Shakespeare's play. The Bard composed one of the most beautiful of his plays when he worked on that one, previously written by Edward De Vere. The 1989 movie by Kenneth Branagh is also a huge tribute to the man. An outstanding man and King.

Obviously, this is the best channel on KZfaq, second to none.

This was a great documentary to watch, it was so relaxing to watch a documentary without having the presenter face constantly on the screen being more about the presenter than the subject as it is the trend today. So many wonna bes celebrities out there. So Thank You, it was an absolute pleasure to watch a documentary all about the subject. I throughly enjoyed it, it is one of the best I have watched.

I liked The King film, but the way it depicted the Battle of Agnicourt really made my blood boil. For a battle everyone knows was won by the longbow, we only see like, two volleys!!!

Found out one of my ancestors was an archer at Battle of Agincourt, was blown away.

9,000 men isn't really supported by evidence. The English numbers in Anne Curry's book are based on the incomplete sick lists. According to her, 11,248 soldiers and 614 support personnel embarked for France.[1] 1,200 were left at Harfleur as a garrison. 1,330 were invalided home. 36 died.[2] Therefore Henry V had 8,680 soldiers and closer to 9,000 when we take into account the reinforcements.[3] However, we do not know if the pay rolls fully and accurately reflect the number of men who were invalided at Harfleur.[3] Those 1,330 was on a list put together out of fear of desertion at the end of the siege.[4] It does not include those who left early during the siege, neither those who deserted, or those who were too sick and stayed at Harfleur when Henry V departed. 1,330 is too low if they suffered from dysentery. Supposedly only 1 earl, 14 men-at-arms and 21 archers died during the siege.[5] That's too low and can not be taken seriously. Henry V's decision in 1417 to pay those that died or left the army meant that there was no need to keep records of English causalities as long as they had the pay rolls.[3] The sources say that thousands were stricken with the bloody flux. The mortality rate among the major magnates was 21.4 %, or 3 out of 14 earls/dukes/bishops dead, and supposedly only 36 men as a total died. It doesn't make sense. (One of the earls died in England.) 10-25 % dying is normal when an army is infected with dysentery.[6] The total number of sick would be around 33-50 %. If we accept the middle ground, around 42 % sick and dead, or 4,982 men, we are close to those 5,000 mentioned by Gesta Henrici Quinti. Subtract those numbers from 11,862 men (which include 614 support) and we have 6,880 left. Subtract a garrison of 1,200 from this and we have 5,680. Subtract most of the support personnel left (miners, laborers, masons and half the carpenters), around 262 men. Add in 543 reinforcements, most of them archers and a few centenary. Now we have 5,961 men. That’s 4,967 archers, 94 wagoners, carpenters and blacksmiths etc. serving as archers, 900 men-at-arms (mounted lancers) as well as approximately 87 well armoured gros valets in the service of the major magnates and rich knights payed for from their own pockets and therefore not counted as soldiers in the pay rolls. One of only three eyewitness accounts on the English side who could have known, the author of Gesta Henrici Quinti, said the English had 5,000 archers and 900 lancers. Henry V would have been rolling over in his grave had he knew what would have happened during his son's (Henry VI) Regin. All those years waging war in France was for nothing. Mores the pity.

The fortunate circumstances of his Life. Charles VI of France mental problems. The Political instability in France. The Favorable terrain conditions in Azincourt (Agincourt ). His fantastic military skills. Did such an extreme effort make any sense? Well, Shakespeare produced one of his best plays based upon Henry V's Life Saga. Aside from that, very little was accomplished !

this is a great video, i have a suggestion though. I find it hard to remember names so i sometimes forget who is who, something that could help that would be if there was always a small family tree in the corner or something, so everytime the narrator talks about someone the appropriate persons name gets highlighted in the tree. This is just a wishful suggestion tough :)

Whoever wrote this documentary really needs to read some realistic history like Essex Dogs. The myth of medieval chivalry is just that. Sure, Henry gave his army of criminals and mercenaries orders not to loot or rape or destroy orchards, but did so with a wink and a nod. He was paying them subsistence wages, they could only profit from looting and he knew it.

As a French native , born in Anjou, with an American passport, I became very interested by the History of England. I am listening the whole series. I am learning a lot and can understand better, and complete the medieval history of France . It is important to see History from different points of vue… ( I was very sad that the English people voted yes to the Brexit - not the people from Wales, nor the one from Scotland… - ) My only “complaint “ - I am French 😉 - would be the repetitive images illustrating the speech. Sometimes they are not even linked to the story…

As a footnote the English side lost the battle at Castaillon la Bataille becuse the French had massed thousands of canon and guns in this the final battle of the 100 years against the English and Girondins that still relied too heavily on the longbow. They were still fighting the last war.

Often a king so determined to be great can let their ambition for greatness affect the security of their reign byndraining all resources. We see that with the Sun King in france and also in England wuth Henry V. Henry IV had a rocky reign but in doing so he secured the kingdom for his son. Henry V onpy produced one heir from marrying so late and spending so little time at home that when that heir was a dud the succession was called into question. He also drained the coffers in the process of being great. His son's deposition and the return of the Plantagenets was inevitable.

Merkwürdig - in der Doku wird gesagt, Henry V. lernte bereits in seiner Jugend Englisch, Französisch und Latein schreiben und sprechen. Aber es ist ebenso bekannt, daß Henry in seiner Verlobungszeit mit Catherine de Valois mit seiner Braut ohne Dolmetscher/-in nicht sprechen konnte, da er kein Französisch und Catherine kein Englisch konnte. Mag sein, daß sein Vater ihm diese Kenntnisse vermitteln wollte, aber Henry's Interessen lagen immer auf militärischem und politischem Gebiet, von Sprachen hielt er nicht viel. Ansonsten ist diese Doku sehr gut gemacht. Es gibt übrigens auf deutsch einen hervorragenden historischen Romanzyklus von der Autorin Rebecca Gablé, die in 7 Bänden die Geschichte des mittelalterlichen Englands von der Eroberung 1066 bis zum Sieg über die spanische Armada 1588 erzählt. Ich weiß allerdings nicht, inwieweit diese Bücher auch in englischer Sprache erschienen sind. (Es handelt sich hier um den "Waringham-Zyklus", ein fiktives Adelsgeschlecht, daß über die Jahrhunderte immer wieder in die wichtigen Ereignisse hereingezogen wird)

I was never one for history when I went to school as it was too many dates and conferences to decide the fate of nations, and I hate date lines, but once the internet came along I binged on all of my favorite topics in history.......it's surprising how vast the Bible is as a history book and not as a religious reference for nerds, even though some interested parties attempt to interpret the words written by desert dwellers on goatskin and copper scrolls as magical occurences........without tangible proof of real mysticism anything can be slanted in the direction you want to impress someone with.
