There was a very real affection between John and his elder brother, the Black Prince. John was ever loyal to his brother and nephew. The not the "greatest of Henry's sons, he was the most steadfast. He was the most consistent. His entire life was in a straight line. Never wavering.

There is one another fact, not mentioned in the biography of John of Gault. One of his daugthers, Philipa, was married to John I of Portugal. Her sons would be famed in Portuguese history, as the fair generation. Her youngest son, Henry, known throughout as The Navigator, would launch the great Portuguese discoveries. Congrtulations for your fine job!

Greeting from the US, Virginia. I am a John of Gaunt descendant via the "legitimized" Beaufort line. That is AMAZING that Henry the Navigator is a descendant--we learned of him in US schools, but not John of Gaunt! One of my GGgrandfathers, Leonard Digges (from the line of John of Guant), invented the theodolite which was used some in Meteorology, Construction and sometimes navigation. He invented the theolite after Henry's death, I believe. Amazing history! So nice to see relations from the Iberian peninsula here.

I am so glad to finally hear more about the story of John of Gaunt. Like many people, today, I find various ancestral paths linking my self to him, and seeing the image of him given in the " portrait commissioned in c. 1593 by Sir Edward Hoby for Queenborough Castle, Kent, probably modelled on Gaunt's tomb effigy in Old St Paul's Cathedral", I felt he held a certain unique personality and character. It's good to know he was not considered an "evil" person, but actually accomplished a lot, even bowing to compromise, whe necessary. Thank you for this excellent documentary.

Im glad I hit up on this documentary because from ever since I have been following English history from I was a teen, I have read John of Gaunt was some kind of failure from many books, an unsuccessful prince who didnt quite measure up to his big brother Edward. Now I see he was indeed successful as the third son could be. He at least kept his head while others were losing theirs. He has now joined Athelstan, Henry I Beauclerc, and Henry VII as my favourite underrated English nobles.

I agree! Henry VII is my favourite English king, & _massively_ underrated. I think Henry I was pretty cool too, tho I need to learn more about him. Same with Athelstan, but it's obvious he should get a LOT more credit & recognition. I'm a fan of Alfred the Great, tho more for his focus on education & law etc (ditto Henry I, I like his nickname Beauclerc too), but he gets credit for Athelstan's achievements too & he really shouldn't.

Certainly the greatest and most noble man of his time, beset by the jealousies of lesser men. He was too noble of character to be king but gave his descendants the belief in their own heritage. Sadly, he has no modern equal.

His support of Wycliff, Henry Chaucer and marriage to a commoner laid the foundations for a flourishing England out of the War of the Roses. Fascinating! I recently read the book of the same name, which was also excellent, & it was great to have this as a counterpart & addition. John's often only looked at dynastically, as the father of the Lancastrians & the Tudors, but he's a really interesting character in his own right, & he was a hugely important figure in English (& European) politics during his lifetime, & it's been awesome to learn about all that.

I first learned about John of Gaunt when I read a novel based on his third wife, Katherine. Since then, I have tried to learn everything I can about them and their descendants. I understood that John petitioned the pope to legitimize the children he had with Katherine when the two married. Such a fascinating time in English history.

A great video about a fascinating man. Would you consider going a bit further by looking into the Beaufort uncles who so ably assisted John of Gaunt's grandson, Henry V? There was great strength and success here, both militarily and diplomatically, forged by the family loyalty and talent of John and his descendants. It is said that perhaps 80% of the English today are descendants of Edward III. Have to wonder how many are descended from John of Gaunt.

I have read every book I could find about John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford. What impressed me the most was the way he showed his love for Katherine. He was extremely generous to her even when she was his mistress. It has also been pointed out that he was not the average royal man during the Middle Ages but was considered exceptionally kind and gentle toward Katherine. This has impressed me more than all his military achievements.

Such a great biography…thank you very much. A minor correction though: John was not born in Beaufort but in Ghent. He owned a castle named Beaufort prior to the birth of his children by Katherine Swynford who got their surname from this castle….🤓😉☺️
