Some of my best photographs occur when I explore the subject through the curious eyes of a child. Getting in close as if to say "I wonder what this is" or "wow! that's what it looks like up close " or I wonder what it would be like looking up from underneath instead of looking down"...I love to explore the subject in ways curious child would.

Great video! I have a photo that has a tiny dot a person standing waist deep in the sea. I was using them for scale but by looking for the shape of that person I picked up something else. Many people caught that the person was checking their phone and the photo took on new meaning. Unless a photo makes you feel something then it has failed. Focus, exposure, composition are just a way of getting there.

Funny how things are. The world is asking more and more from us. Everything is fast paced, anxiety is all over the place... but photography my friend, the good photography demands us to stop, take a deep breath and pay attention to the subject. Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

I agree so much with you...We need to slow down & take it all in...When, on my walks, I slow down & observe something , I am likely to see many things & see some surprises that I would have missed had I casually just walked by.

That's the reason why I do photography, to stop and to focus, to spend time with "unimportant" things, to really see them for once. The pictures I get are secondary. It is not rare that I barely look at them, because the real pictures are engraved in my mind during the moments I spent looking at things. I rarely get the scene I saw in my memory chip, but I do get it in my memory.

What you said is so important . Now , when I have to deal with my depression, the idea of slowing down and take a breath, watch, observe, see, makes a whole difference to what "we" are surrendered to in everyday life.

You'll never know how your photographs are perceived by another person. You personally may not like it but the other person sees it from his perspective and that might (hopefully) be completely different from yours. So someone can be deeply moved by the photograph you don't like.

I think of street photography as people watching, you need to focus on the little things that people do that make a photograph interesting. Most people don’t seem to have the patience or insight to do this, as they photograph people walking or standing or just sitting and it’s uninteresting. I found for me that photographing multiple subjects over the years has helped greatly. Not only nature or architecture, but fashion and now Street. Over the years you learn about lighting and composition and you just need to gain your eye for what makes a photograph interesting. That comes with getting out there and photographing a lot.

I shoot anything that captures my interest at the spur of the moment and then review them on the computer later. I need my photos to tell a story the way my books do when I write. It’s quite challenging, but as a writer, and now a photographer, I want to trigger one’s mind to see other possible worlds that encompass my mind.

Last year, near the peak of the pandemic, and “stay at home” orders, I sent a month taking photos of a tree in my back yard. 30 days, 30 photos, trying to keep them varied and interesting. There were days it was quite challenging, and nothing that will end up on anybody’s best-of list, but a really worthwhile exercise.

I think that from the moment a person takes their camera, makes a frame and takes a photograph, they want to express something. It might not be interesting to me or anyone else, but if she had an intention, then she wanted to say something. It's like in music, there are certain styles that you don't like, but others like and maybe don't like the style of music you listen to.The minimalist photographs are the ones that captivate and attract me the most, I like to look at them for hours, discovering small details and every time I look I always notice something else. Thanks Alex for your channel.

Because I'm trapped by some duties at home I don't have much opportunities to go out and I live in some unpleasing area of the town long forgotten. There are some chimneys occupied by pigeons . Today I made an opportunity to photograph some of them using 1/1600 of a second and 300 mm lens through my dirty window. Now I know more about these birds. This is what I learned before watching this video. No lens, no pixels, the photography is simply you - and I believe in this .

I think one good idea, going back to the peppers, is to take one subject and take 10, 100, 200, 500 photos of it in the course of a week, month, year etc. and keep sorting the ones you like and the ones you don't like into files/ albums. And then regularly coming back to these files or albums and trying to verbalize what you like or don't like about these photos. But also looking at lots of photos of the same subject by other photographers and trying to verbalize what's different from your photos and then taking this into consideration when taking new photos. When I first began to photography vegetables (hobby), I only ever put them on a surface next to each other, often in a circle and it just looked plain. Then I collected lots of vegetable photos from Pinterest and suddenly began to think about different ways of presenting them. In a basket, on top of some boards, with a vegetable peeler, with flowers, cut into different shapes, with peel, in a vase etc. On my own, I would have just collected 50 photos of veggies in a circle and believed that this was just a boring subject and I had no inspiration of shooting them in an interesting way.

Thanks for the great content Alex. My OCD personality keeps me fixated on only photographing in one style, one genre, and with one camera. I’ve been watching your videos daily while recovering from illness and have been relying on the fundamentals of shapes, textures, patterns, and lines to photograph various things around the house. It’s a very renewing feeling 👍📷

Great video! I especially liked what you said about “get off the interstate” and break the rules/guidelines of photography. You are right, we get trapped when we don’t experiment and try new ideas. My favorite feeling leans towards dark and moody black and white images. Many friends follow the rules and feel they can’t break them. When I judge photography I look for the creative artists.

There's something to be said about pre-conceptions and it's relation to what we do. I always think about the concept of beginner's mind - Some of my best photos that I've taken, that are still in my portfolio, were ones that I took in the first 3 months of having my camera and going on one of those little adventures where I was just experimenting. I think looking to other artists work has it's place, but more on the technical side vs the abstract, personal side that resonates with others. Your passion talking about this really makes the video. Thanks for the inspiration.

As a passionate gardener with a couple of forest like patches on the lot I have grown very interested in trees in the past few years. I'm crazy about flowers and perennials, but did not pay much attention to trees before. But as I started cutting down some ugly trees, I began to develop an eye for trees, the very ordinary ones as well as unusual ones in botanic gardens. Now I see their trunks (color, texture, branching), their leaves in different stages, their movement in the wind. There is a world in one tree alone!

Thanks. So many things I learn are really easy in principle. But when the subject of my Learning is a process, then I need aids to learn the process: check lists, ordered Q cards, etc. This can be both good or bad, for example a check list will help you visualize the process and remember the steps. On the other hand, once I start following the list I stop thinking/creating. I am manufacturing. OK, as long as some creativity went into the list. Creating an image from within me that evokes emotion in me (and maybe viewers) is a tricky process; there many things to consider. A learning aid helps you internalize your new way of thinking. In the end, I have to do do a fair amount of planning so that I can relax and shoot in the field.

Noting what my inner voice tells on a particular subject to capture and taking time available for the shot to convey in my picture I preconceived inside my head before hand and giving the best possible placements of the objects in a particular scene to capture with nibleness that my instinct is capable of giving the fleeting moment petrified on the film or sensor is the way I like to make my own pictures. But I always appreciate what a confirmed and we'll established photoshooter has to opine for to better my pictures and I believe that photography has a fathomless depth to delve into with no end to learning it completely. Having said that, you must have to know all the technical aspects including composition and lighting etc you can only make use of them to your advantage by practicing assiduously over and over again until they become a second nature and you don't have to think of those techniques while you make your photographs is a necessity and emulating established photoshooters comes handy during the gestation period for emerging yourself as a different picture maker. Once the gestation period is over it will give birth the thinker in you and world will let you give opportunities to see things in a different light like every successful writer who once in the league of writing school composition on a single subject were found to be different ways of telling the same story but few at the end become as successful in composition as a successful and established writer capable of producing high quality end results and this is the reason why all of them don't come out as a poet or storyteller of recognition!! You need to follow other photographers to get some chunks of their work and techniques and make something your own ot of it all. It's good to follow the best, most impressive. Don't let the mediocre photo crowd get into you, saying you're not good enough, your work is bad, you don't follow the rules. Don't be afraid to cut out parts of body, cut off head, break all the rules - use it wisely and you will be unique. I love this channel, you're a cool guy ;) Here's a sub.

Glad to see the orange cat Alex. This is another wonderful message. Maybe the most important message and discussion on photography I have yet experienced on KZfaq , and I have watched far too many videos. Thank you

I love this channel, but honestly I've been missing the original inspirational videos like Avedon's. I liked the content of the channel - great artists that would act as models to us - as well as the pace of those videos. They looked more authentic, I'd say. Your new "educational" videos are cool, but there are dozens of channels that do the same thing with a standard "youtuber" dynamic. I'm saying that just because I watched Avedon's video again and there you said that you were open to suggestions. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge in this great channel.

Hi Claudio. Thanks for the feedback. At the moment I'm experimenting with different approaches and finding a happy medium. There's an interesting video from Veritasium, who covers science related content, where he talks about the struggle between making content that is informative, but at the same time having to play into the 'game' of KZfaq to get people to actually watch it. You may notice in this video I've started going back to the basics with presentation. Like you, I feel authenticity is more important than 'glitz' and by stripping away some of the fluff that's gotten stuck on the videos in the last few months, we're heading back to that.

@@ThePhotographicEye Yes, I perfectly understand, Alex. You're right, the best thing is to try and find a balance between originality and KZfaq performance. And I suppose that finding a way to go with the flow of the ever-changing algorithms of the platform is a real challenge. Looking forward to your next great videos. Thanks for mentioning Veritassium, I'll take a look there. Cheers!

Another awesome video Alex. I'm hearing impaired and use the closed captions when watching you. You may be amused to know it interpreted blancmange as both "blemish" and "bromance". Being deaf can be fun sometimes.

Because of Covid I restricted myself right to the house and front yard and finding all the things within those boundaries that I usually just go flying by in the car and for the past year I’ve made some really amazing images all in the same Space can’t say that I’m forcing myself to look because I’m enjoying the process too much including turning my DSLR into a pinhole camera for a day That’s right a pinhole DSLR with nothing really in focus lol One of the best exercises a design teacher ever gave us Wayback when was to pick one thing and come up with as many views that nobody would consider and make them exciting to look at even if you didn’t recognize what they were anymore But it had become interesting and taken on a life of their own where you no longer thought oh there’s one of those So whenever I say there’s nothing new to shoot my foot reaches up and kicks me in the ass and says stop lying to yourself 😉

Whatever you do: don't think of a cow...... That, I think, sums up the challenge of doing away with preconceptions. Because when someone says that, you can't help but think of a cow. Therefore you cannot be only deliberate in avoiding preconceptions, because than you are still using them to define what you are doing. So yes: experiment without thinking en just be direct with what you feel and see.

I took a photo of a big red stinging jellyfish and I love that photo. This beautifull creature with colors that match the Nature so it almost disappears. Most peoble have Said, what a beautifull photo But then one of my other friends saw it and she was like - ihhhh this jellyfishes are so nasty! She just saw the animal not the picture.

What do people 'Do' with their photos now. Very few people buy photos to hang on the wall, Very few company's pay for great photos, certainly most news outlets and such are more than happy with a snap taken on a phone. Where is the outlet now . I follow many photo channels but no one talks about what they do with the finished photo , how to get it out in the world . Flicker isn't the site it used to be , can be quite toxic . So what really is the point . spend hours getting a great photo, show to a few friends and family then store it away . I would love a video on this subject .
