I’m going to start homesteading when we buy property this year and I needed an excuse to add some piggies to the plan! is this an actual thing? Like is their poop good compost?

@@5foot3rodeo5 yes absolutely! Their poop is considered “cold” meaning it can be put directly in your garden without composting it first , opposed to hot manure that can burn plants roots if not composted first . 😊

A 2x5 is great for two females! And yes cleaning is a one person job but can be hard as it’s daily cleaning, and vet bills are very very expensive as they are considered exotic animals. And two females are usually the easiest to bond

my vet appointments are usually 100$ at an exotics vet in lacey washington, but only because they do "herd rates" which basically means they charge a flat fee for 2-6 pigs as long as they all go in at the same time. although i have spent up to 500$ in a visit (it was a neuter visit) and 275$ for a medications needed appointment (my older boar is prone to getting upper respitory infections) 2) i own 5 (9 right now because i had an unexpected litter because i believed my older boar was neutered before i got him) and while it does take about 1.5-2 hours for spot cleaning, a full deepclean and laundry will run me about 10 hours between washing and drying and set up. when it was just my original 2 boys a full deepclean only took about 2 hours and spot cleaning took about 15-30 minutes. 3) 3 of my 5 adults are females, and while they are normally easier to bond than males i personally have had far better luck bonding my females to males than other females, and an excedingly easy time bonding my two boys. 4) colored and dyed wood is definitlely not okay, it can mess with their digestive systems and depening on the type of dye or paint used can kill the piggies by virtue of being toxic. natural, untreated wood is best, preferably no pine as they can't break it down as well as aspend, willow, or oak wood. 5) guinea pigs while they can sorta be trained to use a litter box, it will require at minimum twice daily soap and water scrubbing due to frequent urination, and they poop every 10-20 minutes and pee every 15-30 minutes so it's not like they'll run to the litter tray to pee or poop only there. 6) a 2x5 will absolutley work but if you really want to spoil them i recommend either a 3x4 or a 2x6 cage. make sure you have 1 water bottle, hide, bed, and food dish per pig and the more tunnels and toys the better. i house my single girls in 2x3's as i'm in the middle of purchasing more grids to replace the broken ones (they used to be housed in 2x4's) and my pair of boys (before finding out the older one wasnt neutered) shared a 2x10 with their girly. if you get 2 boys or even 1 boy and 1 girl, definitly add at least an additional 2x2 to the cage as boars require more space than girls otherwise they are prone to fighting over territory. i hope this helps, this is all just my personal experience from owning pigs for 2.5 years. also, the store i buy all of my pig supplies and cage materials from is kaveecage.net/ and if you live near a tractor supply store you can get a 9 pound box of hay for about 30-35$ a box, i get 5 a month due to how many i have but 1 when it was just the original 2 would last me about 3.5-4 weeks depending on their appetites. they also usually sell good tunnels, hides, water bottles, and toys for cheaper than pet stores but make sure you read ingredients as pigs over 1 year of age cannot have alfalfa hay unless they are pregnant or nursing and no guinea pig should be eating seeds or nuts of any kind.

I had my females in a 2 by 5 before I got a third and that seemed too be plenty of space! I wouldn’t buy colored things I have a few colored things but they are not reachable for them! I suggest buying from Austin’s website he has great stuff! I have never had to take my pigs too the vet so idk! And then I am 12 with 3 female pigs and I spot clean every night and do a full cage clean 1 or 2 times a week and I don’t have any help i find it easier too do it by myself and ussaly listen to music! @@Guineapigs_slay There has been no issues with them sharing the one. I have put the in at different and the same time, tried putting water bowls in they just refuse. The person I got my first guinea pig says he did it with his first friend 😅 I took it off twice a day and it holds a good amount and does not leak
