The Toyota C-HR Hybrid is a compact SUV with a really striking design plus some excellent hybrid technology. While it used to be offered with a manual transmission, four-wheel drive and a 1.2-litre petrol engine, the revised 2019 C-HR is now only available with 1.8-litre or 2.0-litre hybrid option.
Fuel economy for the CH-R Hybrid is impressive, as are its CO2 emissions. The 1.8-litre claims an official figure of up to 58.9mpg & the 2.0-litre hybrid can manage 54.3mpg.. Those figures mean that even if you do a lot of miles, you no longer need to buy a diesel engine. The combination of hybrid power and an automatic gearbox makes it ideal for urban driving as well.
All new C-HRs come with LED auto headlights and LED daytime running lights. You also get some really smart alloy wheels, a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and a good sized eight-inch touchscreen. The car gets a DAB radio, Bluetooth & Apple CarPlay as well as Android mirroring, all of which are now standard.
As it’s a conventional hybrid rather than a plug-in, the batteries are charged by the engine or from energy harnessed whilst you are driving. Around town you’ll be cruising around silently on battery power alone at low speeds, however, go faster and the C-HR's petrol engine kicks in seamlessly thanks to the Power Split Device.
While the 1.8-litre version is not very quick (0-62mph takes 11 seconds), the C-HR handles very nicely indeed, blending a good ride with responsive handling. It’s the new 2.0-litre hybrid power train that impressed us the most. There’s more performance with 182bhp and a much better 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds. It’s the extra muscle from this power train that provides more effortless acceleration and its more refined. There are additional tweaks to the suspension and the steering on the 2.0-litre hybrid, to account for its extra weight.
If you are thinking of buying one, Toyota’s strong five-year or 100,000-mile warranty, stands it in good stead, as does its five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Residual values look excellent and reliability is virtually guaranteed thanks to Toyota being the World leader in Hybrid technology.
