I take it as he had a breakup that shattered him and these are the irrational thoughts going through his mind while trying to process the crushing loss of the love of his life, or a second theory is that she died unexpectedly and he’s processing it as if she’s alive bc he can’t handle the shock and reality of the situation. Fun fact: this is not a love song. It was written by Sting about his recent ex-wife at the time, and while it might have started off as a love song it quickly became something much more creepy. He once said on a radio interview: “One couple told me ‘Oh we love that song; it was the main song played at our wedding!’ I thought, ‘Well, good luck.’”

It's an example of how a song can "escape" its artist. Sting: it's about an unhealthy obsession and an ode to being a stalker. To the public: it's an ethereal romantic ballad of undying devotion. Bruce Springsteen had the same thing happen with "Born in the USA." Springsteen: it's a downbeat song about growing-up hard in working class America. To everyone else: it's a soaring patriotic anthem. The artist may have intended one thing, but the listening public heard something else. I think it is awesome to have a song about a pissed of rejected partner. I'm sure we can all think of other songs that have this same sentiment. We all go to dark places at times in our lives. Sometimes very dark, very angry. This song captures so many dark emotions. That's what makes it great.

Yes it's definitely dark, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's awful. As long as people realize the context and don't take it as "romantic". Context for any media can be quite important.

What a time in human music.Awesome that when I hear a tune from 40 or 50 years ago I can connect a memory in my life to that. Like I said music is for your soul. kinda a sad song, I was creeped out at first by it being about a stalker. The element of pain and sorrow is pretty heavy, looking at someone who lacked emotional support after a breakup, more so with alot of guys that x partner was person they turned to for support. It feels like listening to someone descending into the abyss as their unable to cope with that lost. That's my take anyway
