Just for late / future viewers, most overhead projectors have the same size, a 13" laptop screen panel is too large, so pixel on the side will go missing, the best fit seem to be 12.5" laptop panels, they fit perfect and they come in full HD resolution, you can drive them with a cheap FHD HDMI LCD controller, so you can hook up your PC, laptop, media devices, consoles. Also change the light source to a 100 or 150 watts cold white LED with a large CPU cooler, use a 24V Power supply and a voltage controller to drive it to the correct LED voltage and may be to dimm it if its too bright (like a DP50V5A). You can use cheap 140mm 2 pin PC fans and a cheap 4x PC Fan controller hooked up to a 12V power supply to cool everything relatively silent. Other modifications can be a large F500mm lens and a "rectangle 16:9 condenser projector lens" for the LED. If possible, get rid of the mirror, put it on a shelf or mount and project directly to the wall.

+Practical Engineering "One of America's seven modern civil engineering wonders" :D. You have to love the pathos and parlance of these old documentaries. Civil engineering is absolutely fascinating, but at the moment I'm confined to the smaller things that I can actually involve myself in :D. Love it! I'm going to try this. When that lamp expires you should try a new high wattage LED. Should cut down on the heat and reduce the fans.

No! Do not toss away the backlight panel! By itself, it could be used for various things like decoration. You can paint on transparent foil and hang it on the wall, as an example. Or you could salvage the pipes in it for decoration, too. Put over each other, with a parabol reflector, you can get a pretty energy efficient light, maybe for your workbench (assuming you have no LED lights there) or against burglars outside!

I didn't think that people would take me literally when I said, that you can toss the other stuff away. I didn't mean that the other parts are totally useless. I meant that you don't need them for the projector.

Kodak has a product LONG ago that was like a retrofitting for those projectors. It was an LCD Screen without any back pieces, just the glass (and polarizing filters I believe) I think it was TN type, not a TFT type. The product was called Kodak "Proxima". I saw it in action once and being a late 90s product it worked very nice. But yours works stunning.

I built one of these back in the day and have dismantled quite a few LCDs as well since the search for the correct LCD felt like a pipe dream but Craigs list and ebay had "broken" LCDs for peanuts if not free. The LCD panel itself can be power with 3.3v and 5v. Sometimes 12volts. On my final build I used a 12volt wall wart with a LM7805 and LM7803 regulators. For cooling the LCD panel I used some AC powered fans that were pretty quite and tied into the main power line to the projector. This way I didn't have the high voltage inverter board in the circuit let alone I was using a LCD that had a bad PSU.

this has a prog over store bought projectors aside form being to get most of the materials super cheap or free one could modify the projector to house not only contain all the components but, also install a Bluetooth sound system too. heck you could even build in battery bank to charge stuff while you watch movies, specially if you use it out side or something.

I've seen commercial versions of this from Kodak and 3M back in the 90's. Was nothing compared to what can be done these days. Love it ;)

Haha, I think they show that same exact Hoover dam video when you visit the dam and do the tour. I live here in Las Vegas and have visited several times, it's a pretty cool sight to see if you're ever in the area.

man you blew my mind. I've seen diy projectors in the past, using small LCD and LEDs, but It never came to my mind that I can use a retro projector like that. I'm thinking that with a lot of time toy could build a nice projector using the lens and fresnel of the retro projector, but putting it together in a linear arrange. this could improve the width of the projector a little bit. also you could adjust the projecting plane to move the projector out of the way. Now I want to give a try. thanks man! you're awesome.

Very nice implementation. Also just to add about the dangers of mains connected power (especially at 240 volts like here in Australia) the large capacitors can continue to store lethal DC mains level voltage (or higher) for some time, so ensure that they are 'safely' discharged after unplugging the mains power before you consider handling the power supply board!

A bright led cluster type bulb replacement would improve things, nice build though ! It brings the spirit of 16mm projectors back, without the ripping of the film that often happened :-) Like the music near the start.

I vaguely recall that commercial LCD/overhead projector adapter units didn't have cooling, either. The housings were thin enough to drop into a briefcase. I was surprised, because, as anyone knows who got stuck sitting behind one in high school, they get hot as hell.

You can salvage small screens from old laptops, that you can buy cheap, then you would need an LVDS driver that costs around 6~7€ on ebay.

I remember planning to build one of these some years back - what held me back is the fact that the TFT-LCD will age very quickly (please tell me when I am wrong) even when it doesn't get too hot, because of the strong IR radiation from the old-fashioned lightbulb. Using a stong-ass LED (150W) might actually work well, but I did not see a project like that yet.

years ago i build my own 1080p lcd projectors. Its not easy but you need, cold mirror as a reflector for a 400 watt hqilamp ( now days maybe led ) You need ir/ uv filter glas, condensor lens, 2 fresnel lenses of high qualtity, and a good varyfocal projection lens. With those parts and some knowledge it will be a great picture.

Very cool project ! The next version is to make a 16:9 wide screen projector compared to this 4:3 one. I know, I know, everything fitted this way, but Im telling you as a challenge. For the future.

I have a been wanting to buy a new computer projector But they are so expensive. I have a couple of old overhead projectors and this is an amazing invention. I'm gonna try and get some help to see if I can make something like this as well. Brilliant idea

You could always buy a dead laptop from eBay for next to nothing and then buy a driver board for the LCD from eBay for about 20 USD, these drivers usually have vga dvi and hdmi on them.

I did this years ago, I put a fan to the side of the LCD (which I stood on wood blocks) to blow air between the LCD and the main projector base. I played killing floor the UT 2004 mod.(with motion sickness) 8 foot high zombies projected onto a wall. Fun times..

I'm sure it's long gone, but next time you do this keep the diffusers, light tubes, and fresnel lens from the display. You can use 5050 RGBWW LED's with them for DIY light panels.

First of all, my thoughts go to everyone touched by these horrible events in Germany. Apart from that, in order to avoid being disturbed by the light from the projector you can also do like in the theater and place the projector behind and higher than the audience.

I just ordered a very powerful LED-module and I will try to use that for a future mod. But it was a very spontaneous decision and I didn't have the time for a lot of research on that yet. Any suggestions for particular LEDs that would be well suited? Links?

It all depends on the beam characteristics (both of the light source and the projector). As you know, LEDs are much more directional than any of the old style incandescent or halogen bulbs. If the projector is set up internally to harvest as much light from that omnidirectional light source and spread it evenly over the whole projection surface, it may be hard to compensate for the LED that beams its light only in one direction. Other than that, just take care that it's bright enough (cooling will also become an issue), I'd try it with something around the 50 Watt range, but that might actually be too bright already. And of course there's the light color, which will give you just a "whiter" white when you use LEDs in the 5000-6000 Kelvin range, instead of those in the 3500-4000 Kelvin range that resemble the old style bulbs a bit more (they're sold as "warm white"). If you really want to save on energy as well, build a proper "joule thief" circuit for it (with an adjustable potentiometer) and you'll make it much more efficient. For that, having a LED that's a bit too bright is actually good because then you don't need to run it at 100% brightness, but go down to 95% and be even more efficient with a Joule Thief.

Well, actually LCD panel LED's don't use high CRI LED's. Some use RGB LED's for high gamut, but you'd still have an edge with color.

Awakened Anhedonic Isn't the color calibration of LCD panels usually done through the panel itself, so it can be independet from the LEDs?

Yes, it'd look fine without the perfect light source. There's a lot of people who say plasma screens with fluorescent backlighting had better color. Today screens use cheap LED's. High gamut screens that cover the Adobe RGB color space use RGB LED's which have sharp intense peeks in each primary color. The spectral characteristics of the light source is still relevant, even though LCD filtering compensates.

i built one of theses with my son about 10 years ago when projectors were very expensive to buy ..we used it for years and my son took it with him too uni when he rented a house .. cooling was the biggest problem along with noise ...now i have a 2nd hand lcd projector cost me £29 ..much smaller lighter but not much quieter to b honest ..

I think I would just use a modern projector. I had one. Let me son hook up the Xbox to it. He and his friends loved it. Took up a whole wall. I think you are the only one that will do this. Good story but not very practical. With that said. I do enjoy your vids.

I build this kind of projector maybe 10-12 years ago.Has 120" display, but for good quality picture I used 400W MH lamp. My sugestion is dont go with LED.

I'm curious, why not elevate the frame holding the panel, and build it so the fans are channeled under the panel to cool it? Could theoretically do that AND have a fan on top of the panel, shouldn't take much space and it would keep the panel considerably cooler. Very cool idea sir, I can't wait to give it a try myself. :)

Very good project. I have a question, you said that black box would make a better image, but what do you think about using mirrors inside the box? Would not it give a brighter image or help to have the same effect with darker LED?

Very nice. Looks purposefully made for these old 4:3 documentaries. Have you considered gutting a used 10" tablet and using the LCD from it, some of those are full HD, and I've seen 2048x1536 ones if you want to keep the 4:3 ratio.

Displays in tablets (and phones) are almost always glued/laminated together. No chance getting light through them from the back.

my projector was made a little bit different 1 i used 13 inch laptop gloss screen, because the size is better unless you have very big projector 2 i did not use oryginal power syply, becuuse you simply need single 3,3 or 5v power suply to power the screen and digital board. 3 use metal halide light source 150 -250w r7s work great even in dayight and do not overheat the screen. As for the cheap LCD ($90 for a 10" LCD?! That's a LOT!) you might want to check for spare LCD parts for small notebooks (like Asus eeePC and similar models). I've seen some for like $28. Of course their resolution is nothing spectacular....

I dunno how buddy found a 5 euro 15 inch LCD, searching up the LG Flatron 15inch on ebay for me shows a bunch of LCDs ranging from 40-80 dollars or more. Seriously I could buy a used 17-19 inch LCD monitor locally or at a thrift store for less then 20 bucks.

do you know that you have no the need to dismount everything of your 5euros screen, you just need to add a colour filter on it, resolution will be the same. i'm just curious of what the purpose of this simple application because you can find video projector with extra lubs for a cheap price and perfect video resolution.

Was meinst Du mit einer hohen Auflösung für kleinere Panels? Soweit ich weiß, werden Laptop-LCDs auch irgendwie standardisiert angesteuert, aber ich weiß nicht, was für Elektronik man dafür braucht. Da dürfte es aber 12 Zoll Panels schon für um die 50€ geben, die haben dann zumindest 1366x768, was zwar nur 720p hd-ready ist, aber besser als die 800x480 oder so, was es so bei 10-Zöllern leider viel zu oft als alte Restbestände von Netbooks gibt.

Do you think you can use UV-Led's as backlight and build somewhat like a uv resin sla printer without a digital light projector (the part that makes them expensive)?

I suspect it's technically possible but with an overhead projector you would need powerful lighting, I doubt LEDs would work but you could use a traditional UV lamp that would be compatible with the OHP (this would probably make it cheaper too). You would really need to make sure no light is spilt out for it to work properly and for safety. I don't know if OHPs have UV filters on the glass, I know a digital projector I took apart did (I used a small UV LED keyring to test the elements).
