In Punjab’s paddy fields, farmers hail ‘revolution’ of three new, low-cost, high-yield rice varieties. Pusa Basmati 1847, Pusa Basmati 1885 and Pusa Basmati 1886 have been harvested for the first time after being introduced by Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI). Watch what farmers and experts say in the ThePrint ground report by Disha Verma and Amogh Rohmetra

Great job IARI, hope this is one of many positive researchs to come out. India need more research in Agriculture domain to become self sufficient and remove dependency on other countries.

We are more than self sufficient. Indian basmati rice is exported in huge quantities. What we need now is to become resilient to climate change by increasing variety of food crops grown. Government needs to incentivise growing of millets and pulses. These are drought resistant and also help with malnutrition

Congratulations to all involved in bringing this new variety of rice to fruition. World population has just reached 8 billion, more efforts are needed for feeding the populations. Research at IARI and educating students about biotechnology must get high priority from government funding,

As a non Indian who has found the comment on this channel interesting, would you consider providing translations for portions not in English. I am interested in what the farmers think about this rice, but I do not understand the language they are speaking.

You are not the only one. I am an Indian and I still can't understand it. Subtitles should have been added. India has multiple regional languages so it's hard for even other Indians to understand when they talk in their regional language.

Though it is a scientific achievement and it to be very much appreciated. I would believe, It will now be introduced elsewhere in rice growing states. But, thought still goes back to issues like trade deficit in edible oil and stubble burning. Somehow Punjab farmers need to be incentivized via monetary returns and rules to move away from paddy I feel. Economy and environment both will be thankful. Thank you for the video and information

Will high yield, bring sowing area down? No. They will grow even more rice, ask more MSP, depress open market prices, and UP/Bihar/Bengal rice farmers will suffer. Give this high yield variety to farmers in other parts of the country, and ask Punjab to grow pulses, ragi, bajra, and oilseeds instead. And focus on industrialization. Abolish MSP, which is nothing but favoritism of rich farmers.
