It's good that you focus on South Asian issues outside India. But please discuss Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Maldives too. Every week, we hear the same broken record. Also, diversify your motifs. How about the lives of people in Interior Sindh in Pakistan where the feudal system has held the poor people by their throats?

Pakistan can be a major danger to India right now. If they default then there's a good chance their politics will become more populist to distract from the economy which likely means more jingoism towards India. Also a bankrupt Pakistan will not be able to contain the Taliban which will cause trouble all over the subcontinent. A prosperous and peaceful Pakistan is in India's best interests, we could have a good trading relationship because of proximity and if the security threat is resolved it would make investors more willing to invest in the entire region

Hi Print team and Praveen, As a regular listener from Pakistan, my 2 cents would be that your panel on Pakistani affairs should be people who're based in Pakistan as their analysis would be little more grounded. While Uzair (although in NY too) is great and his analysis is pretty close to the on ground situation, I'm afraid I cannot say the same about Gul's thinking; most of it was distant, seemed like wishful thinking and pretty biased.

It's an important issue for India. If all our neighbours like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are in financial turmoil we will have a lot of problems as we have a porous border and they look like us and speak the same language as well. Pakistan agrees to meet the metrics that IMF wants in terms of fiscal deficit and primary deficit. Issue is the IMF feels that the plan they proposed overstated revenues and understated costs. They will need action on both revenue and cost end. On revenue side they will have to tax property mafia which includes DHA (defense housing society) and on expense end they will have to cut defense since everything else has been cut to the bone. They just don't have guts to do that.

Very well covered Praveen, good job! Some points to ponder... 1. Why is the Pakistani population not protesting? Remember Srilanka... 2. Will Pakistan consider selling some of its assets e.g., the designated terrorists wanted by several countries? 3. Will USA forget that Pakistan harboured Bin Laden and bail it out? 4. Is this the right time to discuss de-nuclearization of Pakistan?
@bhai857
@bhai857 Жыл бұрын
1. Why is the Pakistani population not protesting? Pakistani Army and its government has successfully given their economic woes a religious spin. They, along with their media's help, have made people believe that this a test of their faith that their God is taking, and they must pass this test by enduring all hardships that come along with it without complaining. Media, Army and Government are all working in tandem, and the public is basically fooled as always. 2. Will Pakistan consider selling some of its assets e.g., the designated terrorists wanted by several countries? It won't help them solve any problems. They need money in Billions, and not millions. 3. Will USA forget that Pakistan harbored Bin Laden and bail it out? USA has already forgotten the Bin Laden incident, and we know it because of it's continued assistance to Pak in upgrading their F-16s, and releasing other grants that were previously blocked by Trump. 4. Is this the right time to discuss de-nuclearization of Pakistan? No one can. Even USA doesn't want that strategically. US wants Pakistan to contain India, just like it wants India to contain China. US will never give India a free pass in the region, and if they had to denuclearize Pakistan, they would have done it long back.

If there's anything to discuss (and learn from-) Pakistan's fiscal and political quagmire, it's how to avoid the same in India. The pakistani drama is a scene that's straight out of the movie _The Adventures of Tintin,_ where there are two bitter adversaries: Capt Haddock and Red Rackham. Their ships are sinking fast in a turbulent sea. But unmindful of this loss and danger, they are locked in a swordfight. As the ships sink, they leap to higher masts and carry on with the fight. They do not try to save their ships nor to salvage any valuables from the sinking ships. Just like that movie scene, Pakistani politicians are also locked in a fight-to-finish, and cannot be bothered to apply their minds to the crisis on hand. So what do we learn from this? Can we expect our politicians to switch over to *management by econometrics,* rather than playing political games? Well, if the recent parliamentary discussion about Adani FPO is any indication, we have yet not learned that lesson!🤦‍♂
