Love the chat with your supervisor! I want to get into psychology bc of those exact reasons. It seems like a career that gives you the opportunity to make meaningful impact on one person’s life that can be felt to those around them. So really, even if you’re just treating one person, you may be treating a whole community! Thanks for the vlogs. You deffo have a new subscriber ♥️

It is so good to see all the back end of psychology clinics, I am currently in my last year of my undergrad of my double degree, however my next move is masters of psychotherapy and counselling as I'm not particularly interested in the research that the psychology sequence entales but it is still so good to see how everything works in your clinic 😊

Interested to hear more about what a formulation session looks like for you! I'm a clinical psyc trainee in New Zealand and so far we've been taught to go away and write up formulations and then present them to a client fully formed in a later session. I wonder whether that's because we're in training or if that's a difference in training and the way we do things? Either way formulating on the fly sounds wildly difficult- any tips?? :)
@thepsychdiaries
@thepsychdiaries 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Lara! Oh my goodness yes during training I wouldn't have any clue how to formulate on the fly but it does get easier :) usually I have an idea of what it's going to look like and I did sketch a brief version of this one on scrap paper first and then the rest I do collaboratively in session. However sometimes when it's a tricky case I will do a full on sit down and chat through the formulation with my supervisor beforehand.

@thepsychdiaries
@thepsychdiaries 2 жыл бұрын
Yea great question! You're totally right that I'm with people all day but I guess during sessions I'm very focussed on the client and my mind is running really hard in the background thinking therapeutically so it's just not the same as a social sit down with someone!

How do u go about ending ur session, if you're seep in discussion? Also, another question I have is, are u allowed to hug clients if they're experiencing big emotions? Lastly, have u ever experienced seeing a client in a public setting outside ur practice, and if so is it awkward, do u have a chat with them?
@thepsychdiaries
@thepsychdiaries 2 жыл бұрын
Ooh interesting 1) I always have an eye on the time and if I am way over I usually try to wrap up by mentioning key takeaways or practice or literally saying I'm aware of the time 2) no hugs! Just what we were taught in training, there are other ways we can provide comfort :) 3) yes we usually discuss if it's likely to see someone outside of clinic- it's fully up to the client whether they want to ignore us or give us a nod, it's our job to follow their lead :) (and keep things confidential)

Hey very nice and chill video, I just have some questions that I have. Your previous video about advantages vs disadvantage of been psychologist is that u need to spend some extra hours with ur own time to finish up the routine works of after seeing ur clients becuz u were usually booked up with 5+ client per day during ur office hour. But in this video does not seem so, maybe cuz like u said in adult setting ur working hour is more flexible? I m someone who is planning to become a clinical psychologist and I am expecting a typical clinical Psy working hour is 9 to 5 and not thing more. So is this a correct expectation? Second question, is there be any salary difference (if yes,how much) in term of a 9~5 clinical psychologist work vs a 9~5 + extra personal hours 2~3 per day clinical psychologist Clinical Psy will be my second career as I am over30 and will have to go thro a 2yr of grad diploma Psy + master if going down this pathway, so it is critical for me to have the right expectations of the work and ur sharings will be greatly appreciated as well as all ur videos. Thanks

Hi, i'm studying psychology in college, however, i'm struggling to decide on a future career. Is being a psychologist an intense job? Do you really need to use everything you learned at University and college? I feel like i would just forget half of what i learned after graduating, and what if i have some emotional breakdown or experience a brain freeze when talking to a particularly hard or emotional patient?
@thepsychdiaries
@thepsychdiaries 8 ай бұрын
Definitely not! You learn mostly research in university and the clinical skills you need aren't even touched on. It's good to have a research backing but you'll get better with practice and brain freeze is so normal I've definitely had it in session 😅
