I have a huge question, and I've looked everywhere and still don't know the right answer for me. I don't know if I want to study to become a psychologist or psychiatrist. I love studying and understanding how the mind works (I've always found mental illnesses to be a very interesting subject as well). I want to have a job where I can help people and I want to know if both areas fit my goals and I have to decide by looking at some other aspect of them or if one of them is better suited for me based on what I said. (You have to decide to take either medicine or psychology in my country, instead of taking an undergraduate course and then applying to med school like in the U.S.)

Thanks for your question! I don't know much about business communication, but if you are interested in the integration of business and psychology an industrial/organizational (IO) psychology degree could be helpful with these. IO psychologists focus primarily on psychology as it relates to business. You can find more information about that here: www.apa.org/action/science/organizational/education-training.aspx

Hi Roger! I get this question a lot. I encourage you to reflect on what aspect of human thought and behavior most interests you. If you are most interested in the biological aspects, a career in medicine might be a better fit. If you are most interested in the psychological aspects, then psychology might be the way to go. If you are interested in both, think about your strengths and weaknesses. To become a psychiatrist you'll need to complete pre-med courses which are heavy in biology and chemistry. For psychology, you'll need a lot of psychology and statistics. Something else to keep in mind - as a psychiatrist, the bulk of your training in psychiatry comes after your MD is done. In psychology, your training begins and largely ends in grad school. There are a lot of pros and cons to both. Something that could help is speaking to psychiatrists and psychologists in your local community to get a sense of what their training was like and what they do in an average day. Best of luck!

Going to throw this out there; most PhD programs (that I'm aware of) usually give full-rides or partial-rides with teaching jobs that cover most of the costs. Most professors I know and I have talked to have said something along the lines of "colleges use Masters student tuition to pay for PhD student research/tuition. Obviously that's not the case everywhere, but it's something to consider.
@drali

How much teaching covers completely depends on the institution. At mine, if I taught it would cover my tuition and I took advantage of that every year I could (it helped that I love teaching). However, I wasn't allowed to do it my first year and also it didn't help me with cost of living (e.g. housing, food, etc).

I still don’t know what to do. I really want to be hands-on and have my own practice and do clinical work. But the Ph.D holds more weight and is more highly regarded.
@drali
@drali 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say a PhD is more highly regarded. Your experiences and training are more important than the letters behind your name. People will be more likely to refer patients to you if they trust your experience. If you're still struggling with this, check out the resources here: mitch.web.unc.edu/professional-development/

As someone who just accepted an offer to a PsyD program, I would say that the PhD doesn't hold more weight in the psychology world. The most important thing I looked for was APA accreditation (and for how long they have been accredited) as well as their ranking and support. My PsyD program has been accredited for many decades, and is also one of the few PsyD programs that gives a stipend and helps with the majority of tuition. The fit of the school with your personal interests is arguably more important than the specific degree. I wanted a more hands-on approach but I am also really interested in research, so I looked for a school that emphasized both! Good luck on your search!

Great video as always! This is a topic I am perhaps a little bias in. I am currently doing a professional doctorate (not a PhD) in counselling psychology. I work a lot in research in psychology in my job and was keen to do some more practical work in psychology. I also loved the therapeutic one to one client work nature of counselling psychology over clinical psychology. The beauty of psychology is that there are so many options and its really all about subjectivity and learning what you want I feel. great video!

I'm extremely interested in a treatment based focus and am pursuing a Clinical Psychologist degree. The PsyD is clearly the more fitting degree, however, the debt is soo substantially higher that It practically gives me an anxiety attack alone. I don't really think there's a strong gap between base income, at least not worth the massive undertaking I've looked at. I'm also pursuing a Ph.D. because being an adjunct professor at an undergraduate university is also a strong desire of mine. It's difficult for me because I'm interested in psychotherapy, education as well as research but it's unrealistic to have a devotion to all three. Fortunately, my undergraduate academic advisor happens to be the chairman of the department with a PhD and an extensive background in research and so I'm hoping to get guidance from him. Thanks for this video Dr. Mattu.

Thanks for your feedback and question! Similar to what I said in the video, while I was trained as a clinical psychologist, I've also worked with a lot of counseling psychologists in the exact same role that I am in. There are some differences in emphasis between clinical and counseling psychology programs, but because both have to adhere to the same accreditation standards graduates from both tend to have similar opportunities. I would focus your research more on the match between you and the program, the quality of the program, and what their graduates do instead of stressing too much on counseling versus clinical psychology. Good luck!

This is a super niche question, but I figure it could be a good place to ask - I'm going on internship next year at a UCC. I have my own training goals that match up well with my site's, which is awesome. So I'm wondering, as someone who completed an internship, what are some things you wish you knew or worked on during internship? Or really just any reflections on the experience? I'm asking everyone these questions, mostly because I'm just curious but also I love hearing how people's internship experiences differed and impacted what they did after internship as well.
@drali
@drali 6 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on the internship, Kathy! That's wonderful news and a big step towards graduation! My advice on internship is use it as a way of building your strengths and discovering your weaknesses. It's the last time you are going to receive this much supervision. So within the support of your supervision, get help on building the type of clinical work you want to do more of in the future. These are your strengths, your expertise, the type of work you love doing. At the same time, take on new types of cases and interventions to discover what you aren't good at, learn how to identify problems that aren't a good fit for you, and understand why. That why when you're a fully licensed psychologist, you'll be much better at knowing what you can independently treat, what you can treat with consultation, and what you need to refer out to a colleague. I hope this helped! Good luck!!!

Idk doctorate degrees are paid for where I live (instead of paying tuition like a masters degree). It would be more affordable to get a PhD. It doesn’t seem financially wise to take out massive debt if there is another way of going at it (that allows for a higher salary than just a masters). Also if you want to work in another country a PhD is going to make that easier. Some countries like NZ are in need of clinical psychologists with doctorate degrees and will make it easier for you to move there. It is a lot harder with a masters or PsyD.

This would be a great idea on a video I can make! I would start by doing more research on the ins and outs of a PsyD and PhD. Also know if the program your looking at is clinical or counseling based. In short, it heavily depends on what your end goal is and what you want to do in the future. As far as when’s the best time. It depends on your financial situation and personality. Me personally, I wanted to go straight into my masters program then doc program. No breaks. But that’s just me! Hope that helps a bit. I’ll be making videos on this type of stuff in the future 😊🤟🏽

My ultimate goal is to have my own private practice utilizing different types of therapy to treat victims of domestic and sexual abuse. If you dont want to rack up a ton of debt then Phd is pretty much just the better option. You still get tons of training that is gonna make you good at what you want to do so long as its accredited. If literally all you want to do is therapy you should look towards masters tracks that get you there way faster like an Msw or certain counseling Psych masters that prepare you for licensure

I have a BA in Socy, that I earned in 2010, but for various reasons have an "overall" low gpa (ya, hard to believe for an undergrad humanities degree). :D I'm actually interested in a PhD in Clinical Psy because I really enjoy psychology and want to challenge myself to become an expert in the field. Fortunately, my businesses provide me the luxury of paying for tuition as I go along, so that's another reason I want to do it. So I'm not doing it for a job, per se, but primarily to learn for enjoyment purposes & make an impact on society with the knowledge. So a few questions. 1) Will my under GPA, which is under 3.0 cumulative be factor? 2) Will the time passed since my undergraduate (2010) matter? 3) Will my work experiences matters (I worked in corporate IT and then become an entrepreneur) 4) Will a criminal background be an issue (non-violent, non-sexual > theft related)?

There are no 100% based online U.S. PhD or PsyD programs that are APA accredited. Do you advise against online PhD programs for non-traditional students? As of 2018, Certain states will accept an APA equivalent program and will grant you licensure as long as all the state requirements are met. Now a days there are a lot of non APA online schools that offer the luxury of learning psychology all in the comforts of your own home. Without knowing specifics about the applicant and the program, I do not make any recommendations regarding unaccredited programs. Going to a doctoral program that is unaccredited might limit someone's job opportunities and also does not give students anywhere to go if problems come up during training. A lot of new, innovative programs are unaccredited and for some they're a good fit. On KZfaq I have a responsibility to give the broadest advice possible and for most students unaccredited programs are too risky.

I’m a junior in undergrad studying psych and gender studies and have been debating going for a PhD or PsyD on the daily it feels like. I adore research, but I adore the clinical side as well (although either are so difficult to imagine being in as I don’t really have a practical framework for what either would look like post graduating). That said, I’ve found Psy.D programs that admit people after undergrad instead of requiring a MA first, and it shaves off a little time which is incredible. Does either decree truly limit you when it comes to what you’re doing? Say, having a PsyD but ending up wanting to do more research, or having and PhD and ending up having more of a passion for counseling? I know that training and experience speaks so loudly, but I can’t help but be apprehensive about which path to choose since it’s such a big financial, timely pursuit.

What I've noticed is more limiting is the quality of training and mentorship that you receive in your program, not the degree you gain.

The Psych Show that’s a great point, thank you for the response! I still am debating between going only for a masters and getting started on licensing hours, going Psy.D, or going for a PhD. Such big, scary, financial decisions. Luckily I don’t need to be applying until the end of this year for start date fall 2021, so I’m meeting with profs and seeing which option will seem to work best 👍

Can you do a video about counseling vs psychotherapy vs regular therapy (therapist)
@drali
@drali 5 жыл бұрын
Long story short, usually there isn't much of a difference. In each of these the focus is working with a licensed therapist (at a masters or doctorate level) who is using some form of talk therapy to help you with your thoughts/feelings/behaviors. The bigger differences are in the theoretical orientation of the therapy/counseling you are receiving (e.g. cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, etc).

Great question, I’ll probably be making a video on this soon. It typically takes about 4 to 5 years. Most complete it in 4 years and you also have to do a post doc internship that would be an extra year. This may very from program to program and state to state. Hope this helps. And thanks for the vid idea 💡😊

Hi Ali! I'm currently studying branding major (6th semester) in a bachelor program, and since about last year, I really interested with behavioral economics (Daniel Kahneman, Dan Ariely, Adam grant, Daniel H Pink, Richard Thaler, etc). Because of my love in behavioral econ, I was thinking about getting a master degree in behavioral science. But I think that's kind of a risky move, considering that the field to study is pretty new. But on the contrary, the field has been progressing really fast, considering there already been 2 noble prizes that highly related to behavioral economics (Daniel Kahneman and Richard Thaler). So my dilemma is, should I study behavioral economics in a formal degree such as master degree, or should I take a safer choice of master degree such as MBA, and learning behavioral economics by reading books. I know this question is not really relevant to the topic you discussed, but as a person who is familiar and expert with the educational system and the field of psychology (which is half of the equation of behavioral economics), I would like to know your opinion about this. Thank you very much!!
@drali
@drali 6 жыл бұрын
Hi William! Thanks for your question. I love the field of behavioral economics. It's wonderful to see this integration between the rationality of economics and the irrationality of psychology. My advice to you is to pursue the degree that is going to help you get the types of jobs you're interested in. Then, focus on applying to programs that offer some specialization in behavioral economics. You can also look into classes on behavioral economics or get mentorship /volunteer with an expert in the field of behavioral economics. If you haven't already, a good next step will be to speak to people who are doing what you want to do, find out what type of training/degrees they have, and then look into programs that offer that training and see where you can integrate behavioral economics. I hope this helps!

Why is CACREP and APA separate? I feel torn between the two paths because I’m interested in becoming a therapist or psychologist (I mainly want to see clients but want to also have opportunities to do other things like consulting). It seems almost counterintuitive that you can get licensed with a master’s on the CACREP side but then can only get licensed with a PhD or PsyD on the APA side. If only one could get a master’s in counseling, get licensed, and then decide if they want to get a PhD in psychology and switch over to the APA side with their master’s still being applicable.

I aspire to have multiple roles which leaves me a bit confused as to the path i should be taking. I really want to be a psychology educator at a school or university but also practice psychology with some form of counseling; i'm not really sure if i want to go all the way to a doctorate degree. Do you see a projected requirement for doctorates as time passes? I'm really trying to avoid a 200k debt.

These are very important questions to be considering. In America, the degree of entry as a psychologist is a doctorate. For most of the world it's actually a masters. Is that going to change in America anytime soon? Probably not. However, there are many ways to be a counselor with a masters degree and lots of ways you can teach with that degree as well. I'd speak to the professors in your bachelors program (in both psychology and related classes) and get their advice.

Can you become therapist if you have PsyD and can you work in hospitals, psychiatrical clinics etc. with PsyD? And can you do PhD or PsyD in Psychology if your bachelor degree is Physiotherapist for ex., sth different from psychology? If answer is yes, than does that mean that a student with a bachelor degree in Physiotherapist has lower chances to be accepted in a PhD/PsyD program in Clinical psychology compared to a BCs student in Psychology? If you choose a master degree will you still have enough practical hours jn hospitals etc.?
