We've been working on improving our pencil grasp with fine motor activities. Most recently, we've discovered some fine motor hand and finger exercises that are so easy to do. I'll also show you the pencil grips we've tried and tested to better hold our pencils!

Yes, talk to your OT. Some OT's have mixed opinions about using grips. Ours is ok with it.

We tried some of those in my sons preschool. I have needed a pencil grip my whole life and I find the one that you showed last, with the three pockets for each finger has worked the best for me. I also really enjoy using smaller pencils plain rubber grips from DT are also good for comfort

Isn't it crazy how they work differently for all kids?! Thanks for the DT tip too! I've seen those there and I wondered!!

For my 7 year old we use a pompom that's the size of a ping pong ball. It is stiffer than regular pompoms and larger so it really fits his hand. He has 2 in his pencil box at school to change out when his hand begins to sweat. They won't allow the grippers as they become distractions. The pompom can be hidden in the hand for less distraction to other kids.

Great ideas! I'm not an OT either, but I am a special education teacher that works with 2 OTs full time in my classroom. According to them, pencil grips are horrible because children rely on the grips. I'm not sure if that's their opinion or researched based. I do love the clothespin idea and the exercises. Thanks Christina for another great video!

I know what you mean, I've heard mixed opinions about it. Our OT worked closely with us to find a grip so I'm sure it varies per child and school of thought. I highly recommend consulting one to find out if it is a good solution too.

Hi Christina! I shared the clothespin trick in one of my recent videos too. It was the only thing that worked for my 5 yr old when he started out. My 4 yr old uses it now too.

Oh good to hear your feedback on that, I love hearing your experience. Our preschool was using it last week and I thought I'd try it with my kindergartner. I found it very comfortable but my daughter didn't like it for long. I'm wondering if she should try it again.

The Purple Alphabet Ya, my older son took to it right away and his grip improved immediately. My younger one took a little more time, but it's working for him now too. Wish I had known about it with my older boys. But I still have 2 more younger ones to try it with too! 😉

Great ideas! I find teaching pencil grasp tricky, especially if they’ve been holding it wrong right up til starting school! I try to teach it earlier now, so the concept isn’t so foreign when school begins. 😊

Yes, of course! That's a great idea. I do know that there are some children out there who were introduced early and still need a little bit extra help due to outstanding circumstance... as that's the case for us.

Currently working on getting my three year old to hold the pencil near the point of the pencil instead of next to the eraser. I wrapped some pretty washi tape around the pencil where I want her fingers to be and all I have to tell her is to hold the blue part and she moves her hands to the correct position. I will certainly check out some of the fun grippers you showed too!

Left handed make sure paper lines up with her left arm instead of the usual slant for right handed writing. Slanting paper for right handed is why most lefties write with the hand hooked. If the paper is slanted correctly left handed can write easily without the hook. My dad is a 'right side up' lefty. IIRC the teacher book for Getty Dubay Italic handwriting series has left handed instructions. Overall their handwriting program is easy to use, easy to write & to read. Also she shouldn't be gripping so tight her index finger is bent inward. That tight of a grip is fatiguing, can cause hand cramps & slows down writing speed.

Thank you so much for these tips! We are grateful that she currently works with an OT and her handwriting is a work in progress.

@@ThePurpleAlphabet I wasn't criticizing, just giving ideas. My now adult son does the tight grip which didn't seem to be an issue when he was learning to write but it causes him problems which is why I mentioned it.

What is the downside of not learning to grip it “correctly”? I have never been able to master this, and I’m now in my 30’s. I have pretty neat handwriting, and don’t have any other fine motor skill issues that I’m aware of.
@ThePurpleAlphabet
@ThePurpleAlphabet 6 жыл бұрын
The downside is for children learning to write - proper pencil grasp helps with letter formation, control, not getting tired and efficiency. If you are 30 and do not have any problems with those areas and have great handwriting, then it is not an issue for you, so that's great!
