In this video, I break down Mariah Carey's style of performing emotions through the years 1991 - 2019, the legato and staccato, and all those good flavors! What do you think? Like and subscribe for more videos like these!

That moment when you realise that she has sung the hardest song in her discography on almost every tour

Up to 1996 and somehow 1998, the stacatto singing was a stylistic choice. Past these years, it became an adaptation to the unhealthy state of her voice.

When Mariah Carey introduces staccato, legato, falsetto, headtone, chesttone, and whistle register on her every tour.. she also taught a lot of singers to be confident in dodging risky notes if needed.

The stacatto singing is a choice due to her impossibility to maintain a stable tone or note without her voice cracking or going into a rasp. At some point, her nodules which were responsible for her unique and beautiful sound but I do think as time went by, they became her worst enemy.

You should've used Beacon Theatre 2014 and 2015, to prove that the usual problem with Mariah is, pretty much, lack of rest.

Not me wanting a new version of emotions with her current vocals, what she did with we belong together (Mimi's Late Night Valentine's Mix) is just 🔥🔥🔥

I really love how basically her technique is always present, but like what happened in 1998, a lot of her abilities are harder to access and use

I wish she would get her nodules removed. I know it’s somewhat of a risk but the surgeries have come a long way, and the odds are very good for her. Even if she lost her whistles, I would take a strong belt over the whistles anyway. We’ve had plenty of whistles over the years.

She also lowered the key which makes it easier to hit the notes and runs. I totally get why she would though. This song is a vocal routine.

Her nodules were greatly responsible in giving Mariah an insane, practically non-human, vocal ability but as she's aged the nodules (mixed with obvious vocal damage, etc.) have been more of a problem for her and far less of a blessing. Either way, I will continue to listen to her sing in "present day" (as the years go by and she continues to sing live) for the rest of her life no matter what she sounds like because, hello, this is THE Mariah Carey, and I've been a huge fan ever since I watched her live debut in real time on Arsenio when I was still a kid. So, vocal damage and declination or not, there's nothing that could make me stop enjoying her voice. Thankfully, quarantine did wonders for her and even her confidence has started to go back up and I'm looking forward to what this new era will bring.

Honestly, 2017-2019's tone was really good- very creative as well.

Funny thing, I do like her the thinner husky whiskey tones she has now. It sounds great on her albums, and I'm sure as she ages, her voice will continue to evolve in new and interesting ways. But watching this really reinforces why I vastly prefer watching performances from her prime years over anything live now. Her voice was fuller and she connected rather than dodged notes. She wasn't forcing or straining her voice, and the happiness of the song came through in singing itself, not just the lyrics ("empty" is such an apt and useful term for live stuff now). I know this song is tough to sing, but the parts where does it in her lower register (or that famous prime performance of hers where she sings it with an obvious and merciliess cold) prove this song could be lowered and still be just fine. I don't understand why she doesn't just do that instead. (I also wish she would hire a Broadway opera vocal coach to help her maintain the voice she has, rather than obviously strain herself.) And please make more song/vocal evolutions if you feel inspired! These are very informative in the best ways.

I guess that's the point of writng and performing your own songs live... you get to sing them however the hell you want even when your not feeling it. impressive voice condition after singing so much for so many decades! ❤

The stacatto like singing doesn't feel as weird in Emotions tbh, because the song is quite fast paced and it lends itself to experiment with this type of phrasing. It bothers me more at the end of Vision of Love, for example, where it completely breaks the climax imo. Still admirable that she manages to perform at this level with her nodules, and it's only a real issue in her belting range (and not every time), her lows, falsetto and whistle are very well preserved.

The original performances in emotions era are refreshing and vibrant, everything is connected and sung fully. I appreciated her for keeping the integrity of the song here. 93-96 it’s more staccato and it breaks the original style but I think it was a genius adaption to the song. In a way I feel like it allows it more space and a makes the song more dancy while still honoring the original. Now after this period I feel like it got more and more fragmented over the years as her voice declined. The spacing became a more of a crux rather than just stylization like the years prior

For starters, the song is almost impossibly difficult to sing. It’s all about breath support more than style of singing but you are correct, in her later years she typically sings the 90s material in broken phrases. Breath support is almost nonexistent. Good breath support is how you get a connected sound and fluidity, which again is especially hard to do in a song like Emotions given it’s tempo, runs and overall technicalities.
