Question 14. Bobotie is not the national dish of South Africa. It is a Cape Malayan dish which has its origins from the Malay slaves brought to our shores in the 17th century by the Dutch and French. We have 11 official languages, 9 provinces and each cultural group and each province has its own dishes. But a united pastime enjoyed by all is a "braai" or barbeque. Always enjoyed with family and friends in the outdoors, always more than one type of meat, always cooked on a real fire, lots of salads and breadrolls. This is where the country's sports and politics are talked about and after a few drinks everyone around the fire will either agree or disagree how the meat should be braaied (cooked).
