I went to an expensive school for a year and bombed out. I was not ready academically at all, and I had a $10,000 student Loan to pay off. I worked at McDonald’s, joined the military as guardsmen to pay down that debt. People called me a drop out, made fun of me. Eventually I paid off the debt, went back to college when I was mature enough, graduated with a 3.5 gpa and no student loan debt. My buddies have over 100k in debt. I guess “dropping out” was the best thing I’ve ever done.

@C B oh they probably can. But not on the high end of that right away I wouldn't think. It's a decent income 65k but not worth paying 150k for to get. Esp when you can get it for cheaper elsewhere.

And 80k in the Chicago area is much less than other areas. When my parents lived in the area they paid over $20,000 a year in real estate property taxes for a roughly average split-level home in a good school district. This is going to be a disaster for him, if he chooses to go.

Prestigious schools like Northwestern, Yale, Stanford, etc. are not worth it if you’re going into a specific field/trade. If you’re going to be a teacher, nurse, therapist, etc. it doesn’t matter any where as near as much as other careers. If you have ambitions to be a CEO, a surgeon where competition for residency is fierce, or things like that, the big name schools can be worth the price.

I'm still paying my $25,000 student loan I took out to get my engineer degree. I went to a state school after getting an associate's degree where my credits transferred onto the big school. I also worked fulltime to pay my living expenses, and books and was only taking out money to cover tuition. I wish I would have budgeted better to have avoided that, but I'm still super glad to have my degree. My $250/mo payment hurts. I'm glad I found the Dave Ramsey baby steps. Better starting late than never.

Wife got her masters degree in marriage and family therapy before she met me. She paid $60k for it, while working full time at a psych hospital. She still went into massive debt for it. She worked for 2 years in the field making under $30k per year. Then realized although she was a great therapist the real money was in research. So now she makes $70k as a research coordinator. Mathematics people. Mathematics! Do not spend money on silly degrees.

YellowBrickExpat Beginning to realize the smart common sense people went to trade/tech school. Capped my own student loan limits. Read the student loan forms and did the math. Borrowed amount I could afford on my terms. Also knew that once finished with school I will be starting career with at least six times annually what I paid in total tuition. And if I had failed at any of this it would be my fault only.

The catch to grad school is that it is hard to transfer out. You are only limited up to 9 hours at most schools, which basically means you can only transfer out during your first semester. Make sure that if you go to grad school, avoid private, for-profit, and out of state schools. And if you get accepted and decide to go, make sure you finish there. Credits are not as transferable as college credit.

I'm thankful for the loans I received. I am an RN now and recently paid mine off. I totally agree it is out of control. I personally know several people who have loans and have zero intention of ever paying them off. That is sad because I dunno how I could have done it without them. I know in the future it won't be available because it's so highly abused. Sad.

Dave is right. In addition, the education requirements for many jobs have gone up... 4 year degrees are required to be a bank teller or an administrative assistant, but it doesn't pay enough to pay off those loans. Those jobs never used to require degrees, so people feel pressured to get degrees just to get basic jobs, and then it becomes wage slaves because you enter the work force with so much debt. Oh and most of the marketing of credit cards is aimed at students who are just old enough to sign up for them, but with so little life experience to understand what they signed up for. The system in general is rigged for slavery.

it took me 6 1/2 years to finish a 4 year degree. Was working 2-part time waitress jobs just so I can pay for school as I go. I had an opportunity to go to one of the best law schools in my state, but it was a private university and it was $32k per semester and that's only admission. That did not include the books and the mandatory study abroad i have to do Junior and Senior year which was $20k. Even with financial aid and scholarships, i still have to shell out $11k per semester and find the funds so I can pay for the study abroad program. My husband being the supportive person he is told me that I can just loan it out and then we'll just "wing it" and figure it out on how to pay for it later. I was just like... I am not going to be $200k in debt by the time I finish my degree. I am not going to do that to my family. So I took a break from school. Did a lot of volunteer work and it actually changed my perspective. I decided to go to a different route, changed my major, went to a school I could afford, and graduated with only $5k in students loans (already paid for). Point being is, there are other options people! If you really want to stick with what you want to do, ok. But find other alternatives. Like you North western guy. There are tons of school in America that offer this program for a way cheaper price! you just gotta dig! Because believe me, employers will not care where you got your degree. They care whether you are actually competent to do the job.

In the 1950s a student could go to a really good college with full board for about $750 per year. And in that era the median income was about $5000 per year. That meant some potential students would go and work for 1 to 2 years and then have the money for the 3 to 4 year program they intended to study. Other potential students would take summer jobs to pay for the year and that meant big hours during the summer with the year then free. Government sponsored programs always have this outcome.
