You know, it's interesting.I lived in Taiwan and the truth is that most people even young people they know.That is not something you want in your life. I came back a few months ago only to go back. I've lived in three asian countries and what I find is that people have a better sense of using money. And amazes me how people Go into business or save as much as they do and invest. Whatever country you live in it's not a bad thing to work while you're young. It is destructive. To take out a lot of debt and not be able to pay it back until you're old.

@@kbanghart sounds like the inmates run the asylum where you work. I was a supervisor and manager for the past 20 years. If my employees cried each time I told them "no" or "get off your phones" and I were to get in trouble... then yes, that is a poorly run establishment. If you don't want to come to work to do "work" then you can leave. And feel free to call that toxic.

Your statement resonates with me so much. I worked at a restaurant about 25 years ago. The owner purchased the business from another franchisee and my team was assembled to come in, hire, and retrain the staff for their newly remodeled location. 50% of the crew was new. We had a LOT of bad seeds, people who were miserable because their job or role was changed. First the veteran (leaders as we were told to refer to them as) team members would brow-beat the new employees, telling them to not do things the way our training staff and trained them. They would insist the new team members pick up more work and do extra side jobs, clearly to help complete work the veterans didn't want to do. I had new employees say, "wow they have me doing extra work outside of what you told me, is this normal?" I'd then have to go and address it with these "leaders". In my book, a leader is someone who can do the work, and guide other's through the process. That doesn't mean they are a "boss", or give them the right to pawn off their work on other people. We had around 7 of these type of employees. It was a great job while it lasted. I was quickly promoted to General Manager. We had sales-breaking weeks year-over-year for the next 3 years. The owner made tons of profit. But yet, I never got a raise and was expected to continue working 6 days a week. I proactively found a job with a higher pay and decided to leave, but the owner came in and relieved me 3 days later. It was and a great 4 years while it lasted. Onward and upward.

Daycare teachers are notorious for being nasty people. It really attracts the worst and you will see stories like yours all the time on the FB daycare groups.

That's what I was taught. The thing is, you have to be ready for when others see your talent, commitment, and skill. I got really good at a job everyone hated, but in the end that job only went so far. Then they get upset that I wanted transferred or promoted to earn more. Meanwhile, I was at the pay cap and there was no forward movement. You also have to realize your worth and know when it's time to move onward and upward.

Oh there’s some that do. I’ve had coworkers legit not work for weeks. And the bosses tried everything to get them to do their job but because work wouldn’t pay for their transportation to work independent of their pay they refused to even work remotely. Went on for months. Now these bosses also treat my team like crap due to the coworkers complaining everything is so horrible…

There's a stronger argument for 4% not being conservative *enough* than for Dave's ludicrous 8% being viable. That will fail more often than not over a 30 year time horizon, and historically there have been years to retire where you wouldn't even make it to 10 years before fully depleting your nest egg (and many where 15-20 years will deplete it).

Agreed! Some people are more affected by this type of negative emotion. It really doesn't have a place in business. Who wants to go into work each day thinking the boss will fire them? When I worked at a restaurant as an assistant manager back in 2010, my District Manager told me to my face; "If you say one more work, I'm going to fire you." In hind sight, I should have said F-off and quit. Instead he turned me into a better person than him. He ended up leaving the company about 2 months later. And because of the situation, I decided to go back to college and stepped down. Win-win :)

That's being a wuss! If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen!!! Every job should be ran like a high-school basketball coach when they're losing, or bootcamp! Pain wether it's physical or mental is the greatest reminder!!! Pain can shape us, challenge us, and ultimately guide us toward growth and transformation.

I appreciate Dave’s opinion even if I have to stop and think more about my actions. It grounds me. I think I’m in a toxic environment. Worked 60+ h a week for months. People keep asking why things aren’t completed when physically it’s hard to do something when assigned at 7 pm on a Friday that takes about 20 h if not more to do by Monday morning when the company doesn’t work weekends and we’re not supposed to do lab work on our own for safety reasons. Then there’s the constant demands and belittling for not knowing something that was never communicated. I just try and think why did this happen and is it my fault. It’s hard.

@@kenonsavage yeah and these same men raised a generation of men who were effected by those standards. and now we live in a society where a man doesn’t want to be abused at work like dave is used to. Meanwhile dave is the same person who has had multiple issues with his workers including lawsuits.

Going though a period like that can be a great growth experience, but it is also not a sustainable state where you would want to find yourself in perpetuity. If I had a job like that, I’d be looking for a new one with all my available energy.

It is odd how we treat high school sports like life and death, but do NOTHING to educate and train our children on how to find and keep a job. One's life literally depends on having a job, but we don't treat job training with the same seriousness as a high school sports game, which at the end of the day means NOTHING.

caller said that he loved his job but his boss was a “boss from hell”. Dave said that maybe the boss was just asking too much and the caller was lazy or a wuss. I suspect that the boss was micromanaging him, and the caller was afraid of his own reaction to his boss’s behaviour as a reason for loosing his job. 😅

I feel like there's a lot you're leaving out from this story, e.g. were you a salaried employee and did you sign paperwork that stipulated that this could be a possibility?

@@soonerdave01 I questioned the salaried position and was told by 3 levels of supervision with HR, that I would be compensated in time or money. I was leaving an Hourly Chemist position and was worried they would up my hours without compensation. I took their word. The quote was "we are reneging on our promise, what are you going to do?"

@@MrJimmy3459 I asked, if you want to punish the Chem Tech, then have him work for free. That would be illegal since he is hourly and protected by the FLSA. I was salary and took their word.

Agreed, talk to your boss. As an HR manager with a Bachelors in Management, HR, and Psychology; there is far more going on here. If the teem member is feeling this way, there is some sort of expectation that has not been communicated. It's coming from both parties, the employee and the supervisor. I've worked at jobs where people felt like they were going to be fired at any moment, and generally is comes down to poor communications or the general state of either the employee or manager.

The email mentioned nothing about wanting to quit but having a boss he believes may want to fire him any day. Based off the email, he enjoys the work and likes the pay. Doesn't sound like someone wants to quit. Very well could be a situation that HR hired him, but the boss he reports to has a personal conflict/issue with Jeff. Some people are oil and water. Dave played 'jump to conclusions' and landed on Wussification of America tm.

@leechburglights Ignore the fact he enjoys the work, which typically means a person puts forth effort. We both agree the letter doesn't contain much info. Unfortunately Dave went straight to the person reaching out is the problem. Not a balanced discussion that it could be him, the boss, or a personality conflict that has little to nothing to do with his work quality or effort. Again, Dave played jump to conclusions... Might have something to do with Dave being a boss with 1100 employees, perhaps causing a defensive reaction. Boss can't be the problem, must be the employee. All that said, Dave could be right. More likely, he just heaped a pile of crap on the guy who is/was a loyal listener and may very well have his priorities in order. He's concerned about his ability to provide for his family. He came to Dave for advice and was told he's the problem. More context could have helped, but the questioner probably didn't think he needed to roll out a laundry list of why the boss is 'bad', he was asking how he should proceed in protecting his job and family, steps to take.

I worked in a restaurant as an assistant manager for about 8 months. Ended up joining the Army National Guard 😂 because the place was awful. My GM said to me, "Man you must hate this job if you've decided to join the Army." 🤣You're damn right I did. When I returned after 6 months of training, I was divided up to work at 3 different locations before given a permanent home store location. It was horrible!😂 was told by my District manager that if I "😡say one more word and you'll have no job." I bit my lip then decided it was time to go back to college. Worst best thing to happen back in 2010. From September though December when someone asked me how I was doing and I was having a bad day, I would respond with; "I'm alright.. But! I'll be better in January 😉". 2 months of this and my GM started asking me, "What's going on in January?" 🤣😂 I said... it will be an amazing new year where WE ALL can start over! He told me, " 😠you can't say that to the employees!" 😁 Then on January 1, after getting the crappiest holiday schedule manager could receive during the holidays, I put my notice in... Said "I'm going back to college!" And started January 17, 2021. It's now 14 years later, I run my own business and own 3 companies 😂 and I'm not an toxic boss.
