Currently, no treatment is shown to cure Autism, but several interventions are used with young children to help them. These interventions are shown to reduce behavioural problems, improve cognitive ability and daily living skills, and help the child to integrate into the community. These interventions include:
- Occupational therapy, teaches skills such as dressing, eating, and bathing. It aims to help the person live as independently as possible.
- Speech therapy, helps improve communication skills. This includes verbal communication and aided communication.
- Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), helps to improve a variety of life skills.
- Play therapy, uses play to improve the child's social and emotional skills, help increase their language or communication skills, and expand the ways they relate to other people.

I contemplated ending my life today but after watching your videos it gave me hope and inspiration to being a better parent. My daughter was diagnosed with autism two years ago and as things get harder I feel more and more heart broken and just can’t cope anymore. If anyone feels like they have no desire to live anymore because they feel they're not enough remember I also feel this way and you’re not alone but everything you’re feeling is false. You are ENOUGH! There is no better parent for your child than you. There is a light at the end of the tunnel even though you’re tired of waiting and it doesn’t feel that way. You will see the light just keep swimming.

Thank you so much for such helpful information and being so straight talking about everything. Honestly, you deserve an OBE or some sort of Award, as your advice is priceless and from hands on experience. We are still waiting after 6 months to see pediatrician for diagnosis of our little one, as you say it is hell in this waiting period. He also has weakness in his legs and no one else has mentioned about the Achilles heel, etc. and to massage, as you said. Thanks so much.

You are a blessing! I have a 13 year old in the United States. We just started the UCLA PEERS 16-week program. UCLA will bill insurance but there is a co-pay for both the parent sessions and the student sessions. Although UCLA created the PEERS program it is available around the world.

This is very helpful. Our daughter was diagnosed at the age of 10. It would be helpful to know if any of your friends have daughters that have autism and diagnosed later in age. We have started horse riding and she lives it we also bought a dog and the meltdowns she had has halved. Swimming is also a great help to her we go to a autism Swimming session weekly. I've found these have helped her so much 💖

Our son also walk on tiptoe before he was diagnosed and it fade eventually. We go to occupational therapy here in the Philippines once a week for 1hr only and he never had speech therapy becuase of availability. So what we did is we do a follow thru at home.. He also loves swimming 😊

We live in America and my daughter is 12 HF but still very autistic (which I feel like I shouldn’t have to say but here we are). We do ABA and just like she said the first few sessions were hell and meltdowns were hard. BUT she is starting to have many successes (we’ve been doing it for about 9 months now) and her flexibility has grown by leaps and bounds. The social aspect has been harder because of stupid Covid and we can’t have group therapy for her to practice in social sessions but we are hoping to have some of that soon. If your child suffered with any milestones, or needs more flexibility this will be great for them!

Thank you for your videos. I’ve been watching them for the past year since my son was diagnosed at 2. My heart shattered when he was diagnosed even though I knew he had autism - it was like I was holding on to this tiny shred of hope that flew away. I experience a lot of grief, namely because I don’t know what to expect for the future. Will my child be potty trained? Will he graduate high school? Just like you my concern is about his ability to be independent when he gets older and I’m no longer around. I don’t care if he prefers his own company or doesn’t participate in family events (though I’d love it if he would) my biggest concern is his independence and that he is able to be content and make his needs and wants known. I’m so emotionally and mentally drained because I always need to be “on” in order to teach him and I worry about time running out - that the window for the best result is closing and he still hasn’t reached certain milestones.

Hoya Tara I used to use specialist cutlery also I love swimming as well when I went away with the fam a few weeks ago I booked myself into swimming everyday it really Calms me very interesting Dylan finds it the same way. You are very right you can’t put children and young people with SEND in a bubble as it’s not real and that bubble will break when they grow up into teens and adults. We had a Play therapist when I was having my ops even at the age of 12 it helped as it was someone to talk to also children in need fund these I had help from children in need.

Last week I also diagonised my 2.9 year old son since he was not talking. Also there were symptoms of autism. But doctor didn't confirmed it's autism bcoz due to lockdown n covid we didnt go outside much n had not interacted with children. Also doc told that this might be also due to less parent child interaction. I hope my son talks like every other kid.

speech therapy can start very early on its not just about speech its self but communication. even babies communicate through crying so i think start as soon as you can xox

My child has been diagnosed HFA at age 6, since he is smart and does things as instructed, his diagnosis at an early age was a miss! I have been redirected to Autism intervention team who might suggest ABA therapy, speech to come later though. I want to know how long the therapy needs to be done and will be continued lifelong!?

Thank you for your help. I'm the grandmother of an autistic 4 yr old boy. I was the one that took him to the doctor to be diagnosed his parents, his mom particularly were ignoring the signs. Now that he has parents have been given the tools to help him they do not do any of it and his mother ignore the teachers giving her instructions. How can I help him when we all live together and she interferes with his trying to be helped from me?

wow having speech therapy everyday, such a luxury in my country. great programs you have there.. in my country, in the EIP usually we have only OT, and usually only 3 hours/day, and it also is very expensive for many of us in this country (private, pay with your own money). We have government school that can accept special needs children (free/minimum pay) but no therapy provided there. There is only 2 government institutions for 4-6 years old with therapy, but the waiting list is very long. At least there are places we can send our children especially in city areas, so we are still grateful. For those living in rural areas, they have it harder..

We are in the USA and through my husband job insurance it covers all types of therapies for our four year old boy we get 40hrs a week of no cost to us of aba therapy, ofcouse we don't use all the hours because it is way to much for our child and our selfs, currently we give him about 20hrs a week and he also does speech and occupational therapy. I think my husband pays like $60 every two weeks for a health insurance for a family of 4. In the USA if you do not have a job or are low income you qualify for free medical which I believe pays for all the special needs therapies they may need.

What an amazing video!!! For our child we did psychology, speech, OT, Physio and neurodevelopmental therapy. We tried the Tomatis Program (didn’t work for us) and we are doing private swimming lessons. Unfortunately equine and music therapy centres are too far away from us but that can be an option for other families. I didn’t want to do ABA therapy but I respect families who did/do it. After all we just want to help our kiddos 💙

USA Early Intervention is 0-3, your child does not need any diagnosis for EI or play therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, ABA therapy(can be covered about health insurance), nutritional therapy. As you said, please do not be scared of an autism diagnosis, you can get more benefits such as a daycare/nursery that specializes in assisting non verbal schools.

Great video. So you know there are a number of local authorities funding ABA therapy here in the UK . Our ABA therapist works with a number of children that are been funded by the LA. The parents requested it however were declined but after an appeal was made they managed to get it through. I have an appeal going through currently and using a specialist solicitor for this process. Will let you know how it all goes

My son’s ABA is funded by West Sussex. We started it straight after diagnosis at 3 privately. We gathered data to support our application for it to be included in his Ehcp. We of course had to engage a lawyer to help us through this process and we’re Successful. It’s helps if you can prove ABA results ours were supported by both the nursery and Speech therapist who teamed up With ABA tutor for support to manage my son’s avoidance behaviour. Good luck.

@@zohrahammad3247 unfortunately you need evidence that ABA is working and making a difference. Even with the evidence be prepared to go to tribunal. So get yourself a good lawyer. We did ABA privately for almost 2 years plus we had private speech therapy. We managed to produce evidence on how we used Aba tutor and techniques help our son access learning by supporting both the nursery and Salt. We provided a tutor to assist these professionals to help manage is escapism behaviour which was making it impossible for them to do any sessions especially Salt. The other challenge is finding a school that is open to aba. The special needs school around our area do not aba they have other therapies. So it also depends on where you would like to send your son will depend on the route you should take. Aba works differently for different kids. Try it privately to see if it’s the right fit for your son before embarking on this battle.

Just last week I diagonised my 2.9 year old son they didn't yet confirmed he is autistic. Bcoz due to lockdown we didn't go outside much n didn't interact with children also therapist told us that this might be bcoz of less parent child interaction. He is not started talking n does repetitive action more sensuous to sound also not potty trained. From next week we are giving him speech therapy first. I hope my son becomes normal n talk like other children. Am so hurt n broken now.

Excellent video! Similar things here in Australia, however ABA therapy is combined in Occupational Therapy here, in my experience, although some states may differ. We found similar, specialist settings like school and therapy centres, is how our boys prospered (our specialist school has a pool for swimming, bike riding, a market garden that the kids tend to every week, and cooking lessons using the grown veges and fruit, and academically they are amazing supports). I’ve found since school, we haven’t had to arrange additional therapies other that OT and speech, because school has been amazing with additional therapies: they have Gym, yoga, computer studies, music, even circus skills - which is improving their balance and motor skills). I love how you mentioned the end game, preparing your son for becoming an adult. I loved how you showed that our children’s therapists, teach us as parents, as much as they teach our kids. Thank you so much for sharing❤️. And same, diagnosis is a loooong process - hugs to all parents out there going through this🥰.

I am in QLD and our OT doesn’t do any ABA therapy combined as it is very sensitive among the autistic community

@@44BabyB we dont do combined either. We used ABA for specific things and once i learned the few techniques mainy around the food and how to try new foods we stopped it. It is a sensitive subject isnt it. I do think it has changed dramaticly since it was first introduced back in the 1970s for sure. as the early litature i read on aba i hated, and only that a therapist who i met through the school had a very gentle approach and said its very much changed since it was first intoriduced that i gave it a try. xox

@@44BabyB I’m very curious to know how therapies may differ in QLD compared to here in the NT, because we may be moving there soon in the next 12 months or so. OT here doesn’t ‘officially’ contain ABA therapy, however the skills that Dylan learnt in ABA, are skills that my sons have learnt in OT, but more play based - does that make sense?

Thank you so much for sharing. My little boy was just diagnosed with ASD last week, he’s also 18 month old. I’m looking for some therapy for him, however the therapist didn’t recommend for ABA cuz he’s still too young to train. May I ask when your child start the ABA and other therapies? Thanks again

In New Hampshire USA we've been doing aba about a year. My son will be 3 in a few weeks. Hes in an early supports program. They provide a speech and occupational therapy and contract out a behavioral therapist. Everything is covered. Since covid happened everything moved to zoom and has been a nightmare. He was getting at home services 5 days a week and now he's only getting 2 days a week for only 30 mins on zoom. Now he's gonna be going to a special ed preschool but because of covid can only get a day. But we will be continuing the behavioral services 5 days a week now hopefully at our house. We r gonna try to see if we can get private services ontop of what we r getting cause we know he needs at least something everyday.

Yes this has been a complete nightmare for us since March. This week has been the worst for us. Since Monday my son all of a sudden has become hyperactive and is chewing everything in sight and constantly just wants nutrigain bars. He was never like this before. Only time he would have energy would be him running back and forth and the chewing everything in sight stopped when all his teeth came in. Hes a picky eater but wouldn't refuse any of his foods that he likes in front of him. Hes also sleeps better than me. Today he was up at 4am and wouldn't nap. We reached out to his therapists and pediatrician so hopefully they have suggestions. Im hoping its just a phase and can't wait until he can finally get in person help.

Omg Thank you so much, Just when I was about to fill the EHCP form and was totally clueless, came across your video. because my 4 year old daughter hasn’t got the diagnosis yet as we are also in the waiting process since 1.5 yrs 😑. Bless you ❤️

In the US there is a lot of controversy over ABA therapy. It is said to cause PTSD and can be harmful in the long run. I don’t know if this is true or not but just the fact that there is controversy and there has been some autistic adults come out to say how bad this therapy was for them i will not put my son thru it. Parents do your research first. If it works for you great but it’s not for me.

ABA's principals are just basically dog training for kids to make them act neurotypical. In later years therapists have brought in more elements from good therapies such as occupational therapy and speech therapy, and just saying that it's part of ABA when it isn't. It was made by the same guy who made conversion therapy for homosexuals, which again is absolutely awful. And yeah, a lot of people who have been through the supposed "good ABA" have come out saying that they've been traumatized and that it did lasting or permanent damage to them. It hurts me a lot as an autistic that I see so many people (typically in the states, where it's covered by insurance) talking about how their children are going through ABA and them not doing enough research, or not having any other option, and just taking places like Autism Speaks' word for it that it's helpful. The basics are to make the child not do the "undesired things that autistic kids do" while not realising that there is a reason for everything. Every therapist is different, of course, but the good parts of ABA are just other therapies that have later been applied by ABA as well, so it's better to just do things like occupational, and creating a safe and supportive environment the autistic at home and at school or work etc. Therapy isn't gonna replace being treated inhuman other places.

Loved your video. Did you live in London during Dylan’s early years? Because here in London getting speech therapy 4 times a week in school is a dream. My son is 5.5 Years has ECHP plans but still isn’t getting any kind of therapy. He got one speech therapy and one Occupational therapy last year. We are giving him every therapy privately. Tried to get some help from council but school didn’t like it. Don’t know what to do. Feels like leaving London . Not getting any help. And therapies are expensive.

When they acess your child though in person they sometimes only see the good side in experience because parent put in a lot to maintain their child or prevent triggers ect - so it can appear that the child is not in need of such great support because the challenges are not always glaring because your always trying to avoid those worst moments ect But then you put them in a school and then the child can ‘act out’ and then the school will wonder why And my personal experience was that they don’t listen to what you want in the ehcp unless they see it for themselves - and this process can put your child through unnecessary stress unless you have a very good LA

Hello was there at any point you considered taking Dylan out of school and joining specialist groups sensory groups private tutoring ? something we are considering for our son , he had about 3 years left in primary school should we manage to get through it we will consider taking him out sooner . The school desk isn’t always the best for every child .I do believe in a little routine and our son enjoys computers games and loves world maps travelling will be fun !he loves geography Is Dylan really into anything that he loves and does really well at like most kids I suppose but like much more obsessed with his world maps and flags and places of interest around the world . Thankyou .Do you think it’s worth getting in touch with my local Autism society see what they suggest or can tell me about groups to join especially if decide taking our son out of school for home educating ?.
