The fact they didnt acknowledge that arizona legitimately broke up with callie in that airport before she slept with mark pissed me off to no end when I watched this lmao. They made it sound like callie cheated when they talked about it in therapy. No she was dumped by the love of her life and went seeking comfort from her best friend/former fuck buddy. They also made it sound like arizona was tricked into staying for the pregnancy....the gaslighting is crazy lol

It ALWAYS bothered me how obvious it was that the therapist was (or seemed to be anyway) taking Arizona's side. And Arizona made out like she was some helpless victim, but she was majorly gaslighting Callie. Callie wasn't perfect or innocent, but the problem was far more Arizona and her selfishness.

When my husband & I went through couples counseling after he got diagnosed with OCD and Depression I legit thought we were either really good clients or (most of the time) that we were doing something wrong because we never yelled or went on a rant in therapy. I was constantly like, "are we being repressed/dishonest?" 'Cause I had only ever seen counseling in shows and it was always like this. You did such a great job explaining how dramas get it wrong and hopefully it makes people be less skeptical about counseling!

@TheEmpressLuna
@TheEmpressLuna 3 жыл бұрын
@@cobblegen1204 Thank you for asking it so kindly. (^~^) We're still married. Counseling gave us the tools to navigate our way out of the rut we were in. Some people looked down on us for it, and took it as a sign we had failed, but I don't think Couples' Counseling is just a precursor to divorce. We went (and scrounged up the money, bcuz we were barely making more than paycheck-to-paycheck at the time) because we loved each other deeply and wanted our marriage to be happy and successful, but we just couldn't figure it out alone. Marriage also isn't a TV show, where a couple has an issue and it's wrapped up at the end of the episode. Sometimes stuff you thought you'd worked through will resurface--even years down the line--and in addition new big stuff will pop up. The highs are very high, but the lows still kick your butt. We still have rough patches, and honestly are in a low phase again right now, but what matters is that: we're committed to working through it; we have married friends who support us and don't seek to make one person the villain, and the other the victim; and we verbalize boundaries and enforce them, even if that means taking time away from each other. (@Mickey Atkins "Boundaries" series is a great refresher.) The best example of marital troubles and working through them that I've seen on TV would be last seasons of Jim & Pam from The Office.

I hate when people say jealousy is bad or negative or something. Jealousy is healthy to know what bothers someone and, to me, it just matters the *reaction* to jealousy. Is my partner trying to prevent me from doing something because they are jealous? Am *i* trying to prevent my partner? Or does someone work through it and address the jealousy. I am polyamorous and sometimes get jealous, but I work on and unpack that shit.

I have so many questions. Do the rules allow for communicating about childcare? Having meals together? Because the therapist was like, "You have a child together, so for her sake, you will live together." But... That child sees her two parents not talking to each other? That seems somehow worse to me.

@@gymnasticsgirlie0647 This is very true. I've never felt safe around my mom and she always said I didn't like affection. It was weird because she always did the mom things and I wasn't abused. Many years later my mom told me how she had such a hard time in the first 2 years of my life and often yelled at me in anger because she blamed me for not being able to finish school and get away from her parents. I don't remember that but my body must because being vulnerable with her always feels unsafe and I feel responsible for her feelings. Therapy has helped a lot but it's hard to work through trauma that happened when I didn't understand what was happening.

I love the way you actually explain how it should be done and don't only criticize the abstract! I learned a lot from watching your videos these last hours which is pretty sad considering I'm a psychology student (in France) and my teachers should be explaining that kind of stuff to us instead of just having us vomit theories (which are important too, I get it, but I wouldn't mind some more practical teaching if I'm going to have to handle patients). All in all, I loved the video, can't wait for more content, thanks for making this and putting it out for free!

(I don't have any classes until September since France has long summer breaks) Thankfully, I'm a really curious person and I read quite a lot of books on how to conduct an appointment and all but still... It depends on the university, and I know some French universities do teach practical stuff from the get go to avoid students being lost in internships but it's not the case in mine. I'm already glad to be lucky enough to study what I like and be able to go to university though, so I'll do my best with the resources I have! I am really proud of myself for kicking ass at "I statements". I learned how to form one in therapy like a decade ago and it changed the way I speak and listen. I had to learn the difference between a thought and feeling. Thoughts focus on witnessing a behavior. Feelings are emotions or sensations that come up for me. "I feel like you are doing it again" doesn't make sense. This is what I was taught...When (name a situation without calling someone out), I feel (one or two feelings) because (what about that behavior triggered those feelings). In order to feel (name preferred emotions) I need (name the behavior I want to see- it's ok to indicate you are speaking about he person) Ex: When my partner commits to showing up to therapy on time and they show up late I feel frustrated and unimportant because the message I get is that my time isn't valuable. In order to feel heard and respected I need a text or call if you are going to be late. With people I have really good communication with I can add "this reminds me of when I was ignored as a kid. I know that wasn't your intention and I know that childhood experience isn't your fault. I just wanted to let you this is deep wound for me."

One thing that also kinda annoyed me was that it was the partner who cheated was specifically bisexual. Like... @Alissa Gray okay that also pisses me off. They framed it lile Callie cheated even though that wasnt the case. @Alissa Gray Hello, I actually just rewatched this season and wanted to chime in. One, Arizona didn’t ask/force Callie to come with her, she offered on her own. She then spent the entire time until they left, constantly making sniping comments about how much worse it was going to be there, how unhappy she was going to be, and what she was giving up. It had a very gaslight-y vibe of “I’m the martyr, doing this amazing thing for you and you should be grateful/feel bad”. Arizona did take it the whole time, up until it was time to leave, before she finally said enough was enough; This was a once in a lifetime career opportunity and Callie was making her feel terrible for earning it and being excited about it. She didn’t want her to come when she clearly didn’t want to and be made miserable the whole time. I kind of sided with Arizona there. Also, Arizona was only gone for like 4-6 weeks. The documentary where she got the job offer was at Christmas, but she was back working at the hospital by mid February. Which means she gave her two weeks, packed up, went to Africa, came back, and got her job back in that time. Finally, yes, Callie was not in the wrong for moving on, and yes, Arizona did in the end break up with her. However, it should be said, Callie moved on in like two weeks, to an ex- friend with benefit and current “best friend”, that Arizona had been insecure about before. Something which Callie, had made her feel bad about in the past. As a result, I feel Arizona really wasn’t in the wrong either, to feel a little upset about the situation when she returned. Especially because, while she was hurt, she didn’t take it out on Callie. She accepted the situation for what it was; a product of her own decisions. I only heard her put her feelings about Mark co-parenting with them into words once, when Callie specifically brought it up. I always walk away from that storyline very frustrated with Callie, not Arizona. (Especially when six years later Callie’s girlfriend of four months gets a job offer across the country, and Callie gives up her career, which is more established by then, and plans to uproot her daughter from her entire support network, with a smile on her face.) ... I don’t actually like Callie, I’m finding on rewatches.

I kind of think they dropped the ball about showing the healthy way to deal with these kindcof think . Especially when this is a show about doctors who know everything about the body . They should have known that you need help to deal with somethings and you can't do it alone .

Yes.. Callie is an orthopedic surgeon. She would be more than aware exactly how much anger and hurt there is in a standard amputation let alone one that came from a horrifically tragic incident like arizona went through. And then on top of that she lies to Arizona and tells her she is the one who actually did it leaving no place for Arizona to put the anger and hurt. All because she wanted...karev to be her person or something equally stupid. There's a reason there are support groups for amputees and for their families because it is a hard thing to deal with. Callie should have pushed this instead of taking on some kind of martyr role. Was arizona acting horribly yes but she was acting very predictably which again Callie would know. And we see repeated signs of Arizona never actually dealing with it like refusing to look at her leg or refusing to let Callie touch it or refusing sex. Lol sorry for the rant but i just hate how they handled this, it's just nonsensical.

Hi, I just found your videos and subscribed tonight and I just wanted to say thank you for what you're posting! It's helping me a lot rn since I'm having a not so great night and even though I only have mild anxiety, it's really nice to hear someone well informed on mental health talk about these things. So thank you and congrats on your channel growth, you deserve it and so much more!

Loooooooove this. I would honestly love to see you do a reaction of legend of Korra season 4. There’s some really great conversations about mental health
@Lauren_210
@Lauren_210 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. “Korra Alone” is one of the best episodes of the show and I love how accurately they depicted PTSD, depression, and physical therapy. Also, I love how they showed that recovery is not always linear as people would assume and that it’s a lifelong process (Jinora’s question, “What’s wrong with her? She got the position out of her” will make people realize that after they hear that from her). Korra didn’t automatically move forward from her trauma right after she removed the last bits of metal from her body and still continued to struggle.

I experienced the trope of a couple's therapist telling us to tell each other what we love about each other. My husband (who had cheated on me with a coworker ten years my junior) had nothing to say. It was brutal. But I will say that I made the promise to myself to never put our two kids between me and my hurt and I have kept that promise. We are still not divorced (don't know why he hasn't filed, but I have no reason to push it) but we get along. AND, I get along SO well with her. I tell people it is possible to hold two conflicting emotions at once - I can dislike that this woman hooked up with my husband BUT still like her and get along with her really well. And why wouldn't I? I found out from 23&me a month back she is my closest 4th cousin. You can't make this up! ;P

In my actual real life right I'm hearing "trust the process" a lot right now, but it's not from a therapist, it's a 12 step program where you pick a behaviour and work on it, it ends next week and trusting the process was good advice through the hard spots.

I loved this video so much and I laughed so hard on your reads on the therapist. I learned a lot. But I don’t know, I don’t think Callie was all that manipulative. If you’ve watched what happened after the plane crash, how callie was willing to leave her job to support her on her grant, how she was actually giving up wanting to have kids to be with arizona, being cheated on, taking care of an angry arizona after she lost her leg, there was a lot that the therapist didn’t address.

1) 27:01 "What're you gonna do, baby?" Don't think we didn't catch that Big Mouth reference 😅 (I'd love to see you react to some season 4 mental health stuff from that show, btw!) 2) I can see why Callie interrupts so much (not that it's healthy or fair to others). If she doesn't say exactly what she's thinking and feeling in that moment, she can straight up have a breakdown in front of her wife and therapist, and apparently, NEITHER OF THEM WILL NOTICE OR CARE.

Bruh! The therapist and her wife ganged up on her which ruined the therapy-client relationship (Like Atkins mentioned) and that's probably why she left at the end?? She felt trapped and by taking the blonde woman's side it probably made her feel trapped even more.
