It's incredibly messed up how Daphne essentially sexually assaults Simon, and the show itself doesn't seem to realise this. While Simon should have been honest about the real reason he didn't want to have children, he didn't deserve that at all. It's even worse in the original novel, where Simon was drunk at the time, and couldn't consent.

Essentially, Simon didn't want girls hounding him and Daphne wanted guys to be interested in her so they decided to pretend to be courting to achieve that. Then ended up becoming friends and falling for each other, getting frisky before marriage and getting caught.

I think all of Simon and Daphne's relationship up until the end can be summed up as extreme lack of communication--on both parts. Because of that lack of communication they both do some screwed up things that deeply hurt the other person. Simon, because he cannot believe anyone could possibly love him because of the way he grew up, and Daphne because of immaturity and in all honesty, some ignorance on how the world really works--in all honesty, it's not all her fault, some can come down to how young women of "good breeding" were raised in that time combined with her strong character, because also she was raised to get anything she ever wanted, as the first daughter, she was spoiled rotten, and not that that made her a bad person, but it shows in how she perceives things.

5:34 - I burst out laughing - Jonathan was hilarious here! He sounded is if he was someone in the same room, suddenly thrust (no pun intended) into the completely unnecessary third wheel situation trying to make the best of a bizarre situation as it was quickly and unexpectedly spinning out of control and unfolding in real time right in front of him while the other two in the room just get hotter and heavier while completely ignoring him. The commentary was so funny at that moment. It made me wish he had been an actual character in that scene and show him actually reacting and saying everything he did in this video. Now THAT'S a Bridgerton I would watch. I've not seen it but feel as if it's way too serious and could use comic relief such as this! A Mitchell and Webb treatment if you will. On that note, look up on y t the Mitchell & Webb skit parody of Pride and Prejudice. And their parody of the classic Hitchcock film Rebacca. Comedy gold. 😂

Love the stopping and asking for consent! Consent and communication are both SO important. I had a partner ask to kiss me, and it was the sweetest thing ever! He also asked before cuddling/petting, and before going under my shirt. When I said I wasn’t comfortable actually taking any clothes off, he accepted my boundary without a hint of disappointment. 7 years later it’s still one of the sweetest things I’ve ever experienced (and said with the right whisper, also one of the sexiest).

I wasn’t that big on Daphne and Simon at the beginning of the season because I never believed there was much between them other than intense sexual attraction. Yes the I Burn for You scene is beautiful but it’s not as beautiful when you realize they were trapped in the marriage and didn’t come together in the natural way I wanted to. And then the sexual assault scene happened and I stopped giving them any more chances. The fact that Simon is sexually assaulted and manipulated into having a child is fucking wrong and horrifying. Not romantic. Sorry not sorry.

Yup ...and then in the show (and the book) the assult is just brushed under the rug...like it NEVER happened. I hated Daphne for the rest of the season. Almost didn't finish the show because of that scene. Very much NOT romantic, I agree. I was so pissed off. It was handled the way sexual assult against male characters usually is...and it was very disappointing. Thankfully, book readers told me nothing like that happens between the love interests in the books ever again...so I was able to just watch season 2 and... forget season 1. There's many fans who had ideas as to how they could remove the assult and STILL have her fall pregnant...and ANY of those ideas would have been better than what they went with in the show. The assult wasn't necessary, IMO. At all.

Yay! This show is full of relationship disasters. They all need therapy - Simon’s dad basically banished him for stuttering when he was three, Daphne has no idea how sex works or where babies come from, and they live in England during the 1800s. Their relationship started as a sham to benefit both - Simon wanted to get the nosy mothers off his back during “The Season,” Daphne wanted to appear more appealing to rich bachelors by being on the arm of a duke.

@@marlyd I have not seen this very popular show and book and have only heard bits and pieces. But yeah, sounds very yuck. Feminism is getting humanity to stop doing bad things to each other and to see one another's perspectives better. It's basically just human rights. The whole "women's rights are human rights" thing. True feminism is good for everyone. It's not supposed to be women gaining some kind of "power" where they can and should then turn around and harm / misuse men they way (some) men have harmed women. Edit: I have since seen many clips of this show now. "Reproductive coercion" by a man OR woman in real life is not funny. And not having seen this specific scene, this scene probably still had a yuck factor from the sounds of it. BUT from the clips i've seen so far of this show, there's camp and highly fictitious, classic romance novel elements to it where all kinds of silly unrealistic artificial problems have to be made up so the characters can go through conflict, tension and drama - so that there's a story to watch basically, of what would otherwise be pretty boring and mundane. 🙄😒

PLEASE do some extra long episodes for Bridgerton bc there is so much to therapize! Just with Daphne and Simon there's so much more than this scene (Simon's whole "I cAn'T have kids thing" is really "I am refusing out of spite to reproduce"). Simon's relationship with his dad. Please, more Bridgerton reacts! This show is incredibly deep and delves into insanely complex topics. I am particularly hung up on the scene where Daphne sexually assaults Simon. Its lack of communication, it sheds light on how a man can very much indeed be sexually assaulted by a woman (even if he is "physically stronger"), it highlights the importance on proper sexual education... It's a very important scene that is most definitely worth learning from.

Not Victorian. Regency. Victoria wasn't even born yet. George III was still king but a complete looney. The prince regent had the rule of the country, hence regency. Adoption was usually through a family member, and then usually only ward-ship rather than full adoption.

Please do a part 2 on this show and the “tragedies” that unfold in their relationship. The fact the show does not really address that she sexually assaults him and then try’s to make it like she is the victim because he lied and manipulated her is messed up. His behavior is terrible too but she continues to have sex with him when there is no longer consent to force him into having a child. Yes yes yes, I really hope he gets far enough to address this at some point, that scene and the way it was handled pissed me off and disgusted me so much that I can no longer watch the show. She essentially raped him, and the only reason the show got away with making her the victim is because she’s a woman. If a man had forced his wife to continue sex in an attempt to forcibly impregnate her… probably would’ve been cancelled had they tried to make a man like that a victim.

This show is about the romantic lives of a family in the 1800s, not a sex ed class. The audience does not need someone coming out and saying "this is wrong guys, do not do this". The show did what it had to do, showing a completely credible situation that couls have happened to a young lady who doesnt know anything about sex because of the century/her upbringing and how she would react to it according to the 1800s standards(you heard me, 1800s, not present time). There was no such thing as consent back then, if you were married then you had a duty to your spouse, which was having sex and providing children, no one made a fuss about it because guess what? it was completely okay for her to do it according to the standards of that particular moment in time. "The fact the show does not really address that she sexually assaults him and then try’s to make it like she is the victim because he lied and manipulated her is messed up." They did adress it, in the way they would have done it according to the time period. Its like watching a movie a movie during the times of slavery and asking "why arent they adressing that its not okay to treat them like that? why didnt the owners get educated about their poor actions? because there was nothing wrong according to them in that time, its pretty simple, you make a period show, you stick to the morals of the time and place

I think what she did was wrong and disgusting but she doesn't even knew what s*ex was, she doesn't know what consent means and I don't think she realizes what she really did and just how hurtful it is. In this age a women was worth nothing if she doesn't have children and she still wanted to be with him when she found out he couldn't because she loves him. But then finding out he physically could and basically lied to her made her act irrational. She is a young girl with no experience or idea of life. Spoilers for Season 1 and mentions SA/// I would love it if you would examine their relationship further especially when they finally fall out and unfortunately reconcile. I have a lot of thoughts and opinions on it and I really feel like there was no excuse for her actions. I’ve seen a lot of people use her ignorance of sex as an excuse for what she does but she knows what forcing someone is. Someone attempted to do the same thing to her and she actually does it to Simon and there was absolutely no excuse for that. It seems a lot of people argue about whether it was rape or not and it literally doesn’t make sense to me whatsoever because he didn’t consent to what she does. After that I couldn’t care less about their relationship especially because Simons feelings were ignored and Daphne was treated as the victim. And then she breaks his boundaries even more by invading his space and privacy. It’s extremely messy and I don’t understand how they continued with the relationship.

@@rosefong65 Same. I think its the best episode of season 2. Overall it was a good season. The focus on family duty and grief and how well they showed why Anthony acts as he does...

Couldn't help it but I laughed a little about the "I can't have children" part... This is exactly what Daphne thinks, that he physically can't. But in fact, he don't want to out of revenge for his father! So... there is a lot to react to in the next episodes! :)

I would pay money to see a reaction to both season 1 and 2 of this show. There is so much that goes on in each episode. Simone has his issues, Daphne hers, Anthony his, and then there are Featheringtons, Cowpers, and the other Bridgerton siblings. :) PS It is set in 1810s England, so Regency England, not Victorian England which is from 1830s/40s-ish to 1900s-ish (during the reign of Queen Victoria).

I would LOVE to see you react to Kate and Anthony (Bridgerton)!!!! I think the past trauma that keeps them from each other could be so interesting to hear your thoughts on as I have seen SO many people saying that they relate to that.

Daphne's eldest brother kept getting in the way of her marriage suitors until she had only this one creeper left. Meanwhile, as a single Duke, Simon can't escape all the mothers trying to push their daughter at him. So they wind up faking a courtship to make her seem more desirable and to make him appear "taken". Of course, as these things often go, they realize they might be better suited to each other than they realize..... 😏

Can you do a segment on Bridgerton with Cinema Therapy? It’s fun to see you two bounce comments off eachother. And it would be nice if you watched the whole show first to understand context. I just watched the segment on pride and prejudice so you would probably like the show.

Please also do season 2! Especially episode 5: An Unthinkable Fate from minute 36 (family dynamics) or from 42mins (emotional/physical - but not kissing-cheating on someone you are in a relationship with.) through to min 45 end of scene. (So start at either 36 or 42 mins in)

Taken alone, this scene is actually quite charming and heartwarming, but when you get the full picture (how they got there, Daphne assaulting Simon later on...), there's so much more to unpack!

You should reach to the books version of Anthony and Kate’s Love story. Book 2. It’s so much more toxic than the second season shows. Maybe use screenshot of episode as reference of where you are reading. Anthony flat out forces himself on to Kate at one point. Locking her in his study with him.

What you have to keep in mind for the sex scene is that Daphne doesn't really know how sex happens. She's been told babies happen when you love someone. So it's a bit like awkward I guess on her part. She's confused on what she's feeling. Caise she had never even touched herself until she met him and he told her that was something she could do for herself.

‘Very sweet and very erotic’ sums up a lot of Bridgerton. Would love it if you watched all of Bridgerton and discussed it. Much to discuss about Simon in season 1 and would love to see you react to season 2 as well. It’s a different couple and leans heavily into specific Jane Austen stories (P&P and S&S).
