I really like the meaning of this VOID song. I'm afraid i won't live to see tomorrow as bloody as a corpse has come to me. The empty room kept repeating in my head, away from a dark place where you leave your own thoughts to see the inner body to find the light within yourself, I look at myself and my feelings in the dark where no one but you criticizes you, the way society pushes unrealistic standards on people that you should overcome your insecurities. Tell me is this hell. Melanie's voice is perfect in my head like a cathedral above all wonderful VOID 😭 💗 💖

Melanie explained that the void is pretty much that state where you're stuck and alone with your own thoughts, so I really enjoyed the way that the creatures that chases after her and stares down at her, is literally a replica of Crybaby, because her own thoughts and her own self is what kept her stuck in the void and she knew she needed to escape

Somebody theorized that the hole where the light comes from in the beginning of the video is a reference to the DEATH music video, where her chest is cut and the heart is out in the open. I also think her appearing in as herself without the prosthetics also once again confirms that she is still Crybaby in the heart, it’s just her vessel that has changed. Love her creativity. She designed her outfit in this video, directed the video and as you know she both produced & written the song itself on her own. CRAZYYY 🙏🏻🔥

I’m 37 years old and last week I took my 13 year old daughter to her concert for her 8th grade promotion gift and it was the best concert I’ve ever been to. And I’ve been to a lot of concerts. It’s was a beautiful masterpiece.

Melanie wrote that VOID has a double meaning. She wrote it meaning for it to symbolize anxiety and overthinking and perfectionism and being trapped in your head. But also in life regression therapy there’s a common phenomenon where people get trapped in a “void” where they’re trapped with only themselves and their self hatred and judgement and the only way to escape is to come to peace with yourself. One of her other songs LIGHT SHOWER is about love and also another common experience in life regression therapy where you just feel cleansed of all worldly troubles and you’re set free.

1. This is a special song for her as she produced it herself. 2. No, not all of her songs are based on personal experience, but many (she had a different childhood than her character). She writes many songs as a therapy for herself to speak out and let go of a problem, along the way helping other people who are facing similar or different problems. According to her, this is one of the goals of her work (information from an interview) 3. She does not consider herself a part of any religion (information from the interview) 4. Information about the meanings (for her, of course) in the songs of this album can be found in her instagram in the portals section.

"Tangled in my own intestines". You know how anxiety usually can surface in physical symptoms to be felt in the stomach area, and people usually refer to it as butterflies in the stomach? It just hit me that she may be very well be referring to physical symptoms of anxiety. When she struggles to get the intestines off of her, may represent her trying to overcome her anxiety. It's brilliant.

Not sure if you noticed but the opening at the top of the ceiling when they come out of the heart? Notice that in DEATH, that’s the exact shape of Melanie’s wound. Right on the chest, exposing where the heart would be. When they escape at the end of this MV, it’s safe to assume this is the point when they begin to emerge from Mel’s previous “vessel”

I dont know if you've been told yet, but it's all supposed to be a trilogy of crybaby's lifes. In k-12 when the woman comes out from the portal and states that she is immortal and must experience life to learn which means from the first album not every character she portrays is the same person their each different vessels that shes learned something from after dying. Then also I remember you were taken away from certain experiences wondering if they were real. She said in a interview that what crybaby goes through is a depiction of what shes been through and some are just from her artistry and understanding. Love the videos so muchhhhh!!!

I really resonated with this song when I first heard it because it feels like that moment when I’ve started to come out of a depressive episode enough to see all of the important things I’ve neglected during that time and how much that neglect has cost me both in financial expense and just lack of relationships that died because I wasn’t doing the upkeep, that sort of thing.

What Melanie says about Void: VOID “This is the first song I fully produced on my own, also in the portal room. The first thing I put down was that bass guitar top line. It was an exact melody from a voice memo I had recorded a few days prior. The chorus melody and lyric came all at once just from looping the bass line. I put down a simple programmed drum loop that was later replaced/mixed in with live drums by Rhys Hastings. I remember screaming that chorus while crying, it felt like a weight I needed to get off of me. The weight of my anxiety, the weight of my brain, and it perfectly fit the second stage. A void. A dark place where you are left alone with your own thoughts for introspection, in order to find the light within yourself.”

The void is described in past life regression therapy as a dark void were you have to find the light in yourself to escape the void, this and the void is a dark messy place with all of your deepest fears and darkest thoughts.

Feel like i have said this everywhere.. but anyway.. A few things I noticed... She is crawling out of the heart seen in Cry Baby's chest in the "Death" music video. Her hair is styled like it was in her song "High School Sweethearts," and during all lightning flashes, it shows her internal organs and ribcage

I'm so glad that I came across your channel! I'm a huge Melanie Martinez fan and will always be. Her music and music videos have gotten me through some tough times. Being a recovering addict and being on the methadone program has been a very long journey. I've been on the program for about 20 years, it feels like alot longer though. Still trying to find myself and where I truly belong on this beautiful and ugly planet we call Earth. I know that I have so much talent, I'm an artist, I love singing, music and art are my true passion in life. Just coming across your channel has been a blessing to me. I've relapsed many times over the years, it aint easy, but if you set your mind to what you truly want to accomplish in life, you can do it! I have always wanted to open an art therapy studio someday. I always wanted to try and help and listen to anyone who needs help. I love it so much how you break down each piece of music you raect to. It really helps to clarify some things that I may not understand. Thank you so much for all that you do, and keep up the amazing work!

I saw a great interview with Melanie in full creature garb. She explains what it means. This one is about her anxiety. I love how Death is about the afterlife and how we all continue to exist. Our body is just a vessel. I read every word and can relate completely.

just some things that will help u understand: u see alot of butterflies in this mv because the butterfly represents growth and transformation. also u will notice that when she says "my fickle insecurities" she says it with a lisp representing her tooth gap. love ur content sm and love how enthusiastic you are 💕

The symbolism of her slicing off the snakes head and flowers coming out is so powerful! It’s like she says in the line: “collect my fickle insecurities and turn them into beauty” so she literally gets rid of her insecurities (by killing the giant snake) and turn them into something beautiful (the flowers coming out of the snake)

So to clear it up for you and maybe some other people, crybaby died when she went through a portal at the end of the movie, "k-12" and theres many theories on how she died aswell as the song "DEATH" but the album and soon to be movie "PORTALS" is about how crybabies body died but her soul moved on. in the movie k-12, a faerie (lillith) mentioned how she has had many bodies and lifes and will continue to have more! hope this cleared things up

In the bug scene all the bugs are her insecurities and when she cuts the worm, it turns into beautiful flowers, so she's basically turning all her insecurities into beauty and letting them go. Fun fact Melanie Martinez went through a hard time before cause she had a eating disorder (that’s why she was rlly skinny before) and so she actually wrote this song all by herself and it’s showing what she went through at that time

there was a rumour going around that Crybaby (Melanie) and her best friend from K-12, Angelita, were reborn as the same being, since in the film, they say "what if we were conjoined twins?" (while talking about their past lives and their relations) and the why the Creature has four eyes, but this turned out to be false since Angelita died in the process of being reborn (I think). Also the Creature's new name might be Katarina since in "Field Trip" Melanie sings "Katarina in the womb for nine months till she birthed me."

The portals album is mostly comforting and giving hope. it really helped me out in tough times and it comforted me a lot, it made me feel not alone and it inspired me to keep fighting until i can do it. I think the Portals album is really good to recommend to mentally unstable people because it really shows them that they're not alone and it gives them hope that they can escape that void.

You missed the part when she shot herself in the head... and those butterflies/moths flew out of her. At the end when she jumped out of the void, you see those insects flying away. Maybe her bodied stayed but she's now traveling in a different form/creature. IDK maybe it's me trying to make something out of nothing. What do you think?

I'm late to the new music party, but as someome who was ignorant on mental health growing up - coming from a family of immigrants from a communist country, just being told you were "soft" and had no reason to complain or feel negative- I was diagnosed with severe depression and PTSD (losing a parent, and as a result a family business, having to sell my childhood home that was a part of my retirement plan, and a divorce all in a 3 year time span) - this song reasonates so much on how addictive isolation can become as well. The better half of this past year has been spent in my room hiding from judgemental family and suffered friendships. And its now a new struggle to overcome this habbit and live again Honestly, this song best represents how I feel 😢 thanks for speaking on it !
