This week I was given a video to blindly react to. Turns out it was the first therapy session from The Sopranos. I may be the only person in the world to still not have seen this, so it was a great opportunity to look at it from a therapist's perspective.

No don’t watch his last therapy session without watching everything else that happens in between and without seeing everything Melfi goes through along the way too - you will feel unsatisfied and perhaps confused

There are so many good interactions between Tony and the doctor in the 6 seasons of the show it's hard to think which one is the best. But the one where Tony compares an intense session they have with "taking a dump" lol is a very good one to explore next. Season 5 Episode 9.

Melfi was the worst "doctor" in the show (psychology is not in the same league as medicine. It's soft science). She never confronted him past season 1, which led to his downfall.

The show is very interesting because Melfi keeps pointing to where Tony should "look" in order to feel better, and seeing him not only ignore, but outright deflect and benefit from decontextualized insights is masterful. It really shows how people behave when a situation in their life forces them to confront something and yet they still don't want to do it, but in his case is a situation spanning all of the show.

I have always wondered that if a psychiatrist knew a patient was an unredeemable sociopath--which Dr. Melfi realizes in season 2--would a therapist continue to "treat" them. I have always felt that it was her compassion--yet also a vicarious thrill for her in a way.

I must say I enjoyed the video. Obviously I am incompetent to comment on the counsellor`s notes here but one thing I really would love (and I am sure a lot of people would love too) is for him to address Tony`s take on the Strong silent type person. I don`t believe this was sort of "a control" thing but simply a personal quality that people should strive for for the greater good.

I've heard that "I don't know" is usually used to not having to answer the therapist's question, if it's something the person doesn't feel like sharing. Is this true/common?
@Counsellor
@Counsellor 3 жыл бұрын
It can be Or it can also be because the client find it hard to connect to their emotions so really doesn't know as they can't relate it in an emotional way. The question I have is why would the client not want to share what they are feeling or thinking about with their therapist?

@@Counsellor I would assume because of shame or something like that maybe? Or just not being comfortable talking to a fairly new therapist about whatever the subject might be? I have had that with a new therapist, that I didn't feel comfortable with yet.

Honestly the problem with all this is, the people that need therapy the most can't afford it anyway. So they don't get it and don't improve. They are at the survival level of just paying bills, keeping a roof over their head and eating (if they are lucky) The best poor people get is watching videos like this and getting cues or insight. In short, do more videos on the situations those on lower income people find themselves in, because they can't afford you professionally anyway and who knows it might get them to a place where they can. Crime shows are a good middle ground, of being interesting but showing some of the situations that never see the light of day for many of us (addictions, abuse, poverty etc) - If you read this all the best and good luck with your career.

Many or at least some therapists offer sliding scale rates depending on how much you earn. I saw a therapist for yrs who specialized in BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder). She didn't take any insurance & her normal rates were I think around $375/hr & this was yrs ago so would even be more now. Anyway I had been in a DBT group with her (therapy specialized to treat BPD) and everyone else dropped out of the group but I kept going & since I felt I was getting so much out of it & less from my other 1 on 1 therapist, I eventually asked if she'd just consider being my therapist. She knew I couldn't afford her regular rate and offered to just charge me $25 per session & honestly over time she even stopped charging me altogether. Her philosophy was that she made more than enough money from her other clients and that I was actually her "hardest working patient" in therapy and she could tell I was benefiting from the therapy immensely so she felt it was the right thing to do & she didn't need the extra $ so why not? Anyway sorry for rambling, and I realize that's a very specific situation but I've def known of other therapists who do sliding scale, my ex even went to a place where that's all they did. It is more difficult with the more specialized issues like BPD and other personality disorders but was sharing my story b/c just wanted to show there's always exceptions to the rule.

Very interesting video. But I really disagree with this view of emotions and the subconscious being like piss, a thing we need to periodically release to maintain health otherwise it's poisonous etc. People should deal with things primarily through their brains and their reason.
